How to Clean Stinky Feet and Get Rid of Odor

Foot odor happens when bacteria on your skin break down compounds in sweat, producing a fatty acid called isovaleric acid. That’s the sour, vinegar-like smell you notice after a long day. The fix involves daily washing habits, keeping your feet dry, choosing the right socks and shoes, and occasionally using soaks or antiperspirants to get ahead of stubborn odor.

Why Feet Smell in the First Place

Your feet have roughly 250,000 sweat glands, more per square inch than anywhere else on your body. The sweat itself is mostly odorless. The smell comes from bacteria, primarily a species called Staphylococcus epidermidis, which lives naturally on your skin and feeds on an amino acid (leucine) found in sweat. That process generates isovaleric acid, the main chemical behind foot stink. People with especially strong foot odor also tend to carry a second bacterium, Bacillus subtilis, on the soles of their feet.

Shoes make the problem worse by creating a warm, dark, moist environment where these bacteria multiply fast. The longer your feet sit in that environment without air, the more isovaleric acid builds up.

How to Wash Your Feet Properly

Standing in soapy shower water doesn’t count. To actually reduce the bacterial load on your feet, you need to scrub them deliberately every day. Use a washcloth or soft brush with regular soap, and work the lather across the tops, soles, and especially between each toe. The spaces between your toes trap moisture and dead skin, giving bacteria a place to thrive.

Drying is just as important as washing. Towel off your feet completely before putting on socks, paying close attention to the gaps between toes. Leftover moisture feeds the same bacteria you just washed away and also creates conditions for fungal infections like athlete’s foot. If your feet tend to stay damp, a quick blast from a hair dryer on a cool setting works well.

Soaks That Reduce Odor

A vinegar soak changes the pH of your skin, making it less hospitable to odor-causing bacteria. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar into one pint of warm water, then soak your feet for up to 30 minutes. You can do this a few times a week. The smell of vinegar fades quickly after you dry off.

Black tea soaks are another option. The tannins in black tea have astringent properties that help close pores and reduce sweating. Steep two tea bags in a pint of boiling water, let it cool to a comfortable temperature, and soak for 15 to 30 minutes.

Epsom salt soaks are popular too. Add one to two cups of Epsom salt to a small basin of lukewarm water. These soaks help reduce moisture on the skin’s surface and can be combined with a few drops of tea tree oil for additional antibacterial effect.

Choose the Right Socks

Cotton socks are one of the most common contributors to foot odor. Cotton absorbs sweat readily but holds onto it, keeping your feet sitting in moisture all day. That’s exactly the environment bacteria love.

Merino wool is one of the best alternatives. It can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet because the fiber pulls sweat into its core while the surface stays dry. Merino also has natural antimicrobial properties that slow bacterial growth. Bamboo fiber works similarly, absorbing and evaporating sweat faster than cotton through its porous structure. Synthetic blends made from polyester or nylon dry quickly and move moisture well, though they don’t resist bacteria the way natural fibers do.

Whatever material you choose, change your socks at least once a day. If you sweat heavily, switching to a fresh pair midday makes a noticeable difference.

Take Care of Your Shoes

Your shoes harbor bacteria long after you take them off. Rotating between at least two pairs gives each one a full day to air out and dry completely. If you wear the same pair every day, moisture never fully evaporates and bacteria colonies grow steadily larger.

Remove insoles after wearing and let them dry separately. Sprinkling baking soda inside your shoes overnight absorbs moisture and neutralizes odor. Shake it out before wearing them again. Cedar shoe inserts work on the same principle, pulling moisture from the interior while leaving a clean scent.

UV shoe sanitizers are a more high-tech option. Research has shown that even a brief UV-C light treatment significantly reduces the bacterial load on contaminated surfaces. These small devices sit inside your shoes overnight and use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and fungi. They’re particularly useful if you wear boots or athletic shoes that are hard to air out.

Antiperspirants for Your Feet

If washing, soaks, and sock changes aren’t enough, an antiperspirant applied directly to your feet can reduce sweating at the source. Standard underarm antiperspirants contain aluminum compounds that temporarily block sweat ducts, and they work on feet too. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry soles and between toes before bed, then wash it off in the morning.

For more persistent sweating, stronger formulations are available. Clinical-strength products designed for hands and feet typically contain 10% to 25% aluminum chloride, with some compounded formulations going up to 30% or 40% for the soles. These higher concentrations can cause skin irritation, so starting with a lower strength and increasing gradually is a practical approach. Many are available over the counter at pharmacies.

When the Smell Won’t Go Away

Persistent foot odor that doesn’t improve with consistent hygiene and the strategies above could signal a fungal infection, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), or pitted keratolysis, a bacterial skin condition that causes small crater-like pits on the soles. Pitted keratolysis is often mistaken for simple foot odor but produces a distinctly sharp smell and visible changes to the skin’s surface.

A dermatologist can identify the specific cause and may prescribe targeted treatments. For hyperhidrosis that doesn’t respond to topical antiperspirants, options include iontophoresis, a procedure that uses a mild electrical current through water to temporarily reduce sweat gland activity. It’s worth noting that broad-spectrum antibacterial treatments can disrupt the normal balance of skin bacteria, so prescription options tend to be more targeted than general antimicrobial products you’d find on a shelf.
