Natural remedies alone do not reliably eradicate H. pylori. Standard antibiotic therapy fails about 20% of the time, but even so, no natural treatment comes close to matching its success rate. Probiotics used as standalone therapy, for example, eradicate H. pylori in only 6% to 12% of cases. That said, several natural approaches can reduce H. pylori colonization levels, ease stomach inflammation, and potentially boost the effectiveness of conventional treatment when used alongside it.
Why H. Pylori Is Hard to Eliminate Naturally
H. pylori survives in the acidic environment of your stomach by producing an enzyme called urease, which neutralizes acid and creates a protective buffer around the bacteria. It also burrows into the mucous lining of the stomach wall, making it physically difficult for any single substance to reach it in high enough concentrations. Antibiotics work because they reach the bacteria through your bloodstream, not just through your stomach contents. Foods and supplements, by contrast, pass through your digestive tract and make only brief, diluted contact with the infection site.
This doesn’t mean natural compounds are biologically inactive against H. pylori. Many of them genuinely kill or inhibit the bacteria in lab settings. The problem is translating that to the human stomach, where concentrations are lower, exposure time is short, and the bacteria have evolved to hunker down in tissue that’s hard to access.
Broccoli Sprouts and Sulforaphane
Broccoli sprouts are the most studied natural intervention for H. pylori, thanks to a compound called sulforaphane. In a randomized trial published in Cancer Prevention Research, 48 H. pylori-positive patients ate either 70 grams of broccoli sprouts daily (about 2.5 ounces) or the same amount of alfalfa sprouts as a placebo for eight weeks. The broccoli sprout group showed measurably lower H. pylori colonization on both breath tests and stool antigen tests, along with reduced markers of stomach inflammation.
Here’s the important caveat: none of the subjects fully cleared their infection by breath test standards, and when eight participants did test negative on stool antigen, six of them turned positive again within eight weeks of stopping the sprouts. Sulforaphane suppresses H. pylori and calms the inflammation it causes, but it doesn’t eradicate the infection. If you want to try this approach, look for young broccoli sprouts (about three days old), which contain roughly six times more sulforaphane precursor per gram than mature broccoli.
Mastic Gum
Mastic gum, a resin harvested from trees on the Greek island of Chios, has a long folk reputation as a stomach remedy. A randomized controlled trial of 148 people found that 350 mg of mastic gum taken three times daily significantly improved symptoms of functional dyspepsia (chronic indigestion) after three weeks. That’s meaningful if your main complaint is discomfort, bloating, or pain.
However, the evidence for mastic gum actually clearing H. pylori from the stomach is much weaker. Earlier small studies that suggested eradication have not been consistently replicated. Mastic gum may help you feel better while you figure out a treatment plan, but it shouldn’t be relied on as a cure.
Garlic
Garlic contains allicin, a sulfur compound that kills H. pylori effectively in lab dishes. Translating that to the human body has proven difficult. A large intervention trial tracked in The BMJ gave participants two capsules of aged garlic extract (200 mg each) plus 1 mg of garlic oil, taken twice daily, over an extended period. The garlic supplementation did not produce a statistically significant reduction in H. pylori-related outcomes compared to placebo.
Raw garlic cloves deliver more allicin than supplements, but the doses needed to match lab concentrations would likely cause significant stomach irritation, which is counterproductive when you already have gastritis. Garlic is a reasonable addition to your diet for general health, but the clinical evidence for it as an H. pylori treatment is disappointing.
Honey
Manuka honey and certain other high-quality honeys inhibit H. pylori growth in the lab at concentrations around 20%. Manuka honey in particular has demonstrated antibacterial properties strong enough to be used in wound care products. But there’s a gap between pouring honey directly onto bacteria in a petri dish and having it reach bacteria embedded in your stomach lining at a therapeutic concentration. No large human trial has demonstrated that eating honey eradicates H. pylori. It may offer some soothing benefit for an irritated stomach, but treat claims of it curing the infection with skepticism.
Cranberry Juice
Cranberries contain compounds called proanthocyanidins that can prevent H. pylori from sticking to the stomach lining, at least in theory. A meta-analysis in the British Journal of Nutrition pooled five randomized controlled trials covering 1,935 people and found that cranberry supplementation increased the odds of H. pylori eradication by 1.27 times. That sounds promising until you see that the result was not statistically significant, meaning it could easily be due to chance. One well-designed double-blind trial found no difference at all between cranberry and placebo groups. Cranberry juice is unlikely to hurt, but the evidence that it helps is thin.
Curcumin
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is a potent anti-inflammatory in many contexts. Researchers hoped it would reduce the inflammatory damage H. pylori causes to the stomach lining by lowering levels of key inflammatory signals. A clinical study in H. pylori-positive gastritis patients found that curcumin alone had limited antibacterial effect and did not significantly reduce inflammatory markers in the stomach mucosa. The anti-inflammatory benefits seen in other conditions haven’t translated well to H. pylori gastritis in human trials so far.
Probiotics as a Supplement to Treatment
Probiotics are worth mentioning because they’re often marketed as natural H. pylori solutions. Used alone, their eradication rates are very low. One study found Saccharomyces boulardii (a beneficial yeast) cleared the infection in just 12% of children, and Lactobacillus acidophilus managed only 6%. Where probiotics show more promise is as an add-on to standard antibiotic therapy, where they may reduce side effects like diarrhea and potentially improve eradication rates by a modest margin. If you’re taking antibiotics for H. pylori, adding a probiotic is reasonable. Relying on probiotics instead of antibiotics is not supported by the evidence.
What a Realistic Approach Looks Like
If you’ve tested positive for H. pylori and are hoping to avoid antibiotics entirely, the honest picture is that no natural remedy has been shown to reliably eradicate the infection. Broccoli sprouts can reduce colonization levels. Mastic gum can ease symptoms. Probiotics can support antibiotic therapy. But none of these, alone or combined, match the roughly 80% eradication rate of standard triple therapy.
Untreated H. pylori isn’t always an emergency. Many people carry it for years without serious consequences. But it does increase the long-term risk of stomach ulcers and gastric cancer, so leaving a known infection completely untreated carries real risk. The most practical strategy for many people is to use conventional treatment as the backbone and layer in natural approaches (broccoli sprouts, probiotics, mastic gum for symptom relief) to support healing and reduce side effects. That combination respects both the evidence and the desire to minimize unnecessary medication.
