How to Deal With Nasal Congestion: Tips That Work

Nasal congestion isn’t primarily about mucus blocking your nose. It’s about swollen tissue. When something irritates the lining of your nasal passages, the tissue becomes inflamed and swells, narrowing the space air can flow through. Your immune system then floods the area with mucus to flush out the irritant, and the combination of swelling and mucus makes breathing through your nose difficult or impossible. Understanding this distinction matters because the most effective remedies target the swelling, not just the mucus.

Why Your Nose Feels Blocked

The inside of your nose is lined with soft tissue rich in blood vessels. When you’re exposed to a cold virus, allergens, dry air, or other irritants, those blood vessels dilate and the tissue fills with fluid. This is the primary cause of that “stuffed” feeling. Mucus production ramps up as a secondary response, adding to the obstruction, but even if you could blow out every bit of mucus, the swollen tissue alone would still restrict airflow.

This is why congestion often shifts from one side to the other when you lie down. Gravity pulls blood into the lower nostril’s tissue, swelling it further, while the upper side opens up. It also explains why congestion tends to worsen at night: lying flat allows blood to pool more evenly in nasal tissue on both sides.

Saline Rinses: The Most Reliable Home Remedy

Rinsing your nasal passages with salt water physically washes out mucus, allergens, and irritants while reducing swelling. You can use a neti pot, squeeze bottle, or bulb syringe. The key safety rule is water quality: never use plain tap water. The FDA recommends using only distilled water, sterile water, or tap water that has been boiled for 3 to 5 minutes and cooled to lukewarm. Previously boiled water should be used within 24 hours. Water passed through a filter specifically designed to trap infectious organisms also works.

Mix about a quarter teaspoon of non-iodized salt into 8 ounces of your prepared water. Some people add a pinch of baking soda to reduce any stinging. Lean over a sink, tilt your head to one side, and pour the solution into the upper nostril. It will flow through your nasal cavity and drain out the other side. Repeat on the opposite side. You can do this two to three times a day when congested.

Nasal Spray Decongestants Work Fast, but Set a Timer

Over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays shrink swollen blood vessels in your nasal lining within minutes. They’re the fastest-acting option available without a prescription. The catch is that using them for more than a few days can cause rebound congestion, a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa, where your nasal tissue swells worse than before once the spray wears off. This rebound effect can develop after as few as three days of use.

The mechanism involves your body adjusting to the spray’s effects by increasing blood flow to the area once the medication fades. Over time, your nose becomes dependent on the spray to stay open at all. If you find yourself reaching for a nasal spray more than three days in a row, it’s time to stop and switch to other methods.

Most Oral Decongestants on Shelves Don’t Work

This is one of the most important things to know before you spend money at the pharmacy. The FDA has proposed removing oral phenylephrine from the market as a nasal decongestant after a comprehensive review determined it is not effective at the doses found in over-the-counter products. An advisory committee unanimously concluded that current scientific data do not support its effectiveness. Phenylephrine is the active decongestant in many popular cold and sinus products that line pharmacy shelves.

If you want an oral decongestant that actually works, look for pseudoephedrine, which is kept behind the pharmacy counter in most states (you’ll need to show ID, but no prescription is required). Pseudoephedrine does effectively reduce nasal swelling, though it can raise blood pressure and cause jitteriness in some people.

Steam, Humidity, and Menthol

Breathing in warm, moist air can thin mucus and soothe irritated nasal tissue. A hot shower is the simplest approach. You can also fill a bowl with hot water, drape a towel over your head, and breathe the steam for five to ten minutes. The moisture helps your nasal lining function more normally and can make it easier to clear mucus afterward.

Keeping your indoor humidity between 35% and 50% supports sinus health more broadly. Below 30%, mucous membranes dry out, leading to irritation and greater susceptibility to infection. Above 50%, mold and dust mites thrive, which can trigger or worsen congestion in allergy-prone people. A simple hygrometer (available for a few dollars) lets you monitor your home’s levels, and a humidifier can bring dry indoor air into range during winter months.

Menthol, the cooling compound in products like Vicks VapoRub and menthol lozenges, creates a strong sensation of improved airflow. However, studies measuring actual nasal airflow show menthol has no effect on objective airflow. It significantly increases the perception of breathing more easily without changing how much air is actually moving through your nose. That doesn’t make it useless. If your main complaint is the feeling of being stuffed up, menthol can provide genuine subjective relief, especially at bedtime. Just know it’s a sensory trick, not a physical one.

Positioning and Sleep Strategies

Congestion almost always feels worse at night, partly because lying flat allows blood to pool in nasal tissue and partly because you lose the benefit of gravity helping mucus drain downward. Elevating your head while sleeping helps on both fronts. Stack an extra pillow or place a wedge under the head of your mattress so your upper body is at a gentle incline. This promotes drainage and reduces the blood pooling that inflates nasal tissue.

If one side is more congested than the other, lying on the opposite side can help. The congested side, now on top, will benefit from gravity pulling fluid away from that tissue. Combining elevation with a saline rinse right before bed and a warm shower is often enough to get through the night without waking up gasping for air.

Hydration and Warm Fluids

Staying well-hydrated keeps mucus thinner and easier to clear. When you’re dehydrated, nasal secretions become thicker and stickier, compounding the blockage from swollen tissue. Water is fine, but warm liquids like tea, broth, or soup do double duty: the warmth produces mild steam that you inhale with each sip, and the fluid itself supports hydration. There’s a reason chicken soup has a reputation for helping with colds. The warm liquid, steam, and salt content all work in your favor.

When Congestion Signals Something More

Most nasal congestion from a cold clears up within 7 to 10 days. Allergy-related congestion follows exposure patterns and often responds well to antihistamines or nasal corticosteroid sprays. The situation to watch for is a bacterial sinus infection, which can develop on top of a cold or allergy flare.

The clinical threshold is straightforward: if your symptoms, particularly thick discolored nasal discharge along with facial pain or pressure, persist without any improvement for at least 10 days, a bacterial infection is likely. The other red flag is “double sickening,” where you start to feel better after a few days, then suddenly get worse again. Fever above 100.4°F, severe pain concentrated on one side of your face, or discharge that’s thick and discolored primarily from one nostril all point toward bacterial involvement that may benefit from antibiotics. A standard viral cold doesn’t need antibiotics and won’t respond to them.
