How to Dry Water in Your Ear: What Actually Works

Tilting your head to the side and gently tugging your earlobe is the fastest way to get water out of your ear. Most trapped water drains on its own within minutes using simple physical techniques, but water that sits in the ear canal for days can lead to infection. Here’s how to dry it out safely.

Why Water Gets Stuck

Your ear canal is a narrow, slightly curved tube about an inch long. When water enters during swimming, showering, or bathing, surface tension can hold a small amount of it against the eardrum or along the canal walls. The curve of the canal works against gravity, so simply standing upright won’t always let it drain. Earwax buildup or a naturally narrow canal makes trapping more likely.

Physical Techniques That Work Immediately

These methods use gravity and pressure changes to break the surface tension holding water in place. Start with the simplest and move down the list if needed.

Tug and tilt. Tilt your head downward toward your shoulder on the affected side. Gently tug or jiggle your earlobe with your fingers. You can also shake your head side to side while tilted. This straightens the ear canal slightly and gives gravity a better angle.

Lie on your side. Rest the affected ear on a towel for a few minutes. Gravity slowly pulls the water out, and the towel absorbs it. This is especially useful if you’re dealing with a stubborn pocket of water that won’t respond to head-tilting alone.

Create a palm vacuum. Tilt your head sideways and press the affected ear into your cupped palm, forming a seal. Push your hand rapidly back and forth, flattening it as you push in and cupping it as you pull away. This creates a gentle suction effect. After a few seconds, tilt your head down to let the water drain out.

Drying Drops for Stubborn Water

If physical methods don’t fully clear the water, ear drying drops can evaporate the remaining moisture. Over-the-counter versions sold at most pharmacies contain roughly 95% isopropyl alcohol and a small amount of glycerin. The alcohol mixes with the trapped water and evaporates quickly, while the glycerin keeps the skin of the ear canal from drying out too harshly.

You can also make a homemade version by mixing equal parts rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. Apply a couple of drops into the affected ear, wait about 30 seconds, then tilt your head to let it drain. The vinegar helps restore the ear canal’s natural acidity, which discourages bacterial growth. The University of Iowa Health Care recommends this mixture especially for people who get repeat infections after swimming.

Don’t use any drops if you suspect a perforated eardrum (sharp pain followed by sudden relief, bleeding, or hearing loss). Drops can pass through the perforation and cause pain or damage to the middle ear.

A Hair Dryer on Low Heat

Set a hair dryer to its lowest heat and lowest airflow setting. Hold it about a foot from your ear and aim the warm air toward the opening of the ear canal. The gentle heat speeds evaporation without risking a burn. Pull your earlobe gently downward or outward while you do this to open the canal. A minute or two is usually enough.

What Not to Do

The instinct to stick something in your ear is strong, but cotton swabs are the worst tool for the job. They push water (and wax) deeper into the canal, and they cause real injuries. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found at least 35 emergency room visits per day among children for cotton-swab injuries over a 20-year period. Common injuries include bleeding ear canals, perforated eardrums, and cotton tips that break off and get lodged inside.

Avoid using your finger, bobby pins, or any other object to dig into the canal. Don’t use high-pressure water from a showerhead or syringe to try to flush it out, as this can push water further in or damage the eardrum.

When Trapped Water Becomes an Infection

Water that stays in the ear canal creates a warm, moist environment where bacteria thrive. This can develop into swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), an infection of the outer ear canal. Knowing the progression helps you catch it early.

In the mild stage, you’ll notice itching inside the ear and slight redness. Discomfort gets worse when you pull on your outer ear or press the small bump of cartilage in front of the ear canal. You might see a small amount of clear fluid draining.

At the moderate stage, the itching and pain intensify. Your ear may feel full or partially blocked from swelling and debris. Hearing on that side becomes muffled.

Advanced swimmer’s ear causes severe pain that can radiate into your face, neck, or the side of your head. The ear canal may become completely blocked. At this point, you need professional treatment, as the infection won’t resolve with home remedies.

Preventing Water From Getting Trapped

If you swim regularly or deal with this problem often, a few habits make a noticeable difference. Wear silicone earplugs or a fitted swim cap that covers the ears. After every swim or shower, tilt your head to each side and let water drain naturally. Using the alcohol-vinegar drops after water exposure can prevent moisture from sitting long enough to cause trouble.

Avoid over-cleaning your ears. A healthy layer of earwax actually repels water and protects the canal’s skin. Stripping it away with frequent swabbing removes that natural barrier and makes trapping more likely.
