The most effective way to dry a CPAP hose is to hang it in a loop over a towel rack, shower rod, or hook and let gravity pull remaining water droplets down and out both ends. In a well-ventilated room, a standard hose air-dries completely in two to four hours. Getting it fully dry before your next use matters more than the method you choose, because lingering moisture inside the tubing creates conditions where bacteria and mold can grow.
Why Thorough Drying Matters
Every time you breathe through your CPAP, warm, humid air passes through the hose. If residual water sits inside the tubing between uses, it becomes a breeding ground for microorganisms. Studies examining contaminated positive airway pressure devices have documented bacterial and fungal colonization on CPAP components, and at least one case of Legionella pneumonia has been linked to CPAP use. While confirmed infections from contaminated tubing are rare, the simplest way to reduce risk is to keep the hose dry when it’s not in use.
Moisture also causes a more immediate annoyance: condensation that collects inside the hose overnight and drips onto your face or makes gurgling noises. This is sometimes called “rainout.” A hose that started the night already slightly damp makes the problem worse.
The Basic Air-Drying Method
After washing your hose with mild soap and warm water (recommended weekly), rinse it thoroughly, then shake out as much water as you can from both open ends. Pat the outside and the connectors with a clean towel. Then hang the hose in a U-shape so both ends point downward, allowing water to drain out by gravity while air circulates through the interior.
Good places to hang it include a towel bar in the bathroom, a shower curtain rod, or a wall-mounted hook near your CPAP setup. Some people install a simple adhesive Command hook on their headboard or nightstand specifically for this purpose. The key is keeping both ends open and unobstructed so air flows through the full length of the tube. Draping the hose over a closed door also works well, since the curve sits at the top and both ends hang free.
Avoid direct sunlight. ResMed specifically warns that UV exposure can harden tubing over time and eventually cause it to crack. A clean, dry indoor spot with decent airflow is ideal. If you wash your hose in the morning, it will typically be completely dry by the time you go to bed.
Speeding Up Drying Time
If you don’t have hours to wait, a few tricks help move things along. After shaking out the bulk of the water, thread a clean, lint-free cloth through the hose by tying it to a piece of string or a long, flexible rod and pulling it through. This wipes down the interior walls and removes most of the remaining moisture. You can also connect the hose to your CPAP machine (without the humidifier turned on) and run the device for 10 to 15 minutes. The airflow pushes through the tubing and evaporates residual water quickly.
Some people aim a fan at the hanging hose or place it in a room with a ceiling fan running. This cuts drying time noticeably compared to still air. Just make sure the area is clean, since a fan can blow dust and pet hair into the open ends of the tubing.
Drying Heated Tubing
Heated CPAP hoses have thin electrical wires running through or along the tubing wall. You can wash them the same way as standard hoses, using mild soap and warm water, but there are a few extra precautions. Avoid fully submerging the electrical connectors. Don’t wring or twist the hose aggressively, since this can stress the internal wiring. And make sure the tubing is completely dry before plugging it back into your machine, both to prevent electrical issues and to avoid trapping moisture against the heating element.
Heated tubing generally has the same three-month replacement schedule as standard tubing. If yours is approaching that age and you notice it takes longer to dry or has a persistent smell even after washing, it’s time for a new one.
Daily Drying vs. Weekly Cleaning
Manufacturer guidelines call for two separate habits. Daily, you should disconnect the hose, let any accumulated moisture drain out, and hang it to dry. This takes only a minute and prevents water from pooling overnight between sessions. Weekly, you should do a full wash with mild soap and water, rinse completely, and air-dry before reassembling.
The daily drain-and-dry step is the one most people skip, but it’s arguably the more important habit for preventing moisture buildup. Even if you don’t wash the hose every day, simply hanging it each morning so it can air out makes a real difference. If you use a humidifier with your CPAP, also empty the humidifier chamber every morning and let it dry. Standing water in the chamber contributes to the same moisture and contamination issues as a wet hose.
What Not to Do
A few common shortcuts can damage your tubing or introduce new problems. Don’t use a hair dryer or put the hose in a clothes dryer. The concentrated heat can warp the plastic, weaken the connectors, and (for heated hoses) damage the wiring. Don’t dry the hose in a dishwasher or microwave. Don’t leave it bunched up on a counter or stuffed back into the CPAP while still wet inside.
Avoid using bleach, rubbing alcohol, or harsh cleaning solutions, as residue from these chemicals can off-gas into your airstream. A vinegar-and-water solution (half and half) is a reasonable option for a deeper periodic clean, but you still need to rinse well and dry thoroughly afterward. The goal is a hose that is clean, dry, and free of chemical residue before it goes back on the machine.
