Engaging your core while sitting comes down to a gentle, sustained activation of your deep abdominal muscles, not sucking in your stomach or clenching everything tight. Think of it as tightening a belt around your midsection: firm enough to create stability, relaxed enough that you can breathe and talk normally. Once you learn the technique, even one-minute intervals throughout your day can meaningfully reduce the spinal fatigue that comes from prolonged sitting.
Which Muscles You’re Actually Targeting
When people say “core,” they usually picture a six-pack. But the muscles that matter most for seated stability sit deeper than that. The transverse abdominis wraps around your torso like a corset. It contracts before your limbs even move, acting as a built-in stabilizer for your spine. When it fires properly, it also activates the multifidus, a group of small muscles that run along your vertebrae and lock individual spinal segments in place.
These two muscles work together with your diaphragm (above) and pelvic floor (below) to create what’s essentially a pressurized cylinder around your spine. Keeping the transverse abdominis gently contracted while sitting maintains the conditions for your diaphragm and pelvic floor to function well, building internal pressure that supports and unloads the lower back. Prolonged sitting without this activation causes fatigue in these deep trunk muscles, which decreases spinal support and increases stress on the spine.
Step 1: Find Your Neutral Pelvis
Before you can engage anything, your pelvis needs to be in the right position. Sit on a firm chair and rock your pelvis forward (arching your lower back) and then backward (rounding your lower back). Step 3: Breathe Into the Brace
The most common mistake people make is holding their breath the moment they tighten their core. This defeats the purpose. Your diaphragm is a core muscle itself. When it contracts during a normal inhale, it pushes down and expands your lower ribs outward, increasing pressure inside your abdominal cavity. That pressure is what actually stabilizes your spine. Your shoulders shouldn’t rise. On the exhale, you’ll feel the brace tighten slightly on its own. As the activation becomes more automatic, gradually extend each interval. Another frequent error is letting your ribs flare forward. When you brace, your lower ribs should stay down and slightly drawn inward. It introduces just enough instability to prevent you from going fully passive without requiring you to replace your entire chair. Any of these tools work best as a supplement to deliberate practice, not a replacement. If your core muscles haven’t been trained to activate, an unstable surface alone won’t teach them the pattern. Learn the brace on a firm, flat chair first, then add instability once the technique feels natural.
