Relax Your Body From Head to Toe
The military sleep method is a progressive relaxation routine designed to knock soldiers out in two minutes, even in uncomfortable environments. The two-minute claim requires practice over several weeks, but the technique itself works well from day one because it forces your attention away from racing thoughts and onto physical sensation.
Lie on your back and close your eyes. Start at your forehead. Consciously think about the muscles there, notice any tightness, and let them go slack. Move down to your eyes, your cheeks, your jaw (let your mouth fall slightly open). Drop your shoulders as low as they’ll go. Relax your upper arms, forearms, and hands. Take a deep breath and release your chest, then your stomach. Finally, work down through your thighs, calves, feet, and toes. Spend about two to three seconds on each area. By the time you reach your feet, your body should feel noticeably heavier against the mattress.
