How to Fall Asleep Fast When You Can’t Sleep

If you’re lying in bed unable to sleep, the single most effective thing you can do right now is stop trying. Effort is the enemy of sleep. Your brain can’t be forced into unconsciousness; it has to drift there. The techniques below work by giving your body and mind the conditions to let that happen, starting with things you can try in the next two minutes.

Try the Military Sleep Method

This technique, used in military training to help soldiers fall asleep in uncomfortable conditions, promises results in about two minutes with practice. It won’t work perfectly the first night, but it gives your body a structured path toward relaxation.

Lie on your back and close your eyes. Start at your forehead and work slowly down to your toes, consciously relaxing each part of your body. Think about your forehead, then your cheeks, your jaw, your neck. Give each area permission to go completely slack. Move to your shoulders, your upper arms, your forearms, your hands. Then your chest, your stomach, your thighs, your calves, your feet. Once your body feels heavy and loose, picture yourself lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but blue sky above you. If thoughts intrude, silently repeat “don’t think” for ten seconds.

The key is methodical patience. Most people who dismiss this technique rush through it. Spend at least five seconds on each body part, genuinely noticing the tension there before releasing it.

Use Your Breathing to Trigger Relaxation

For “lamp,” you’d picture a lemon, then a ladder, then a laptop, then a lake. When you run out of L-words, move to A-words, then M-words. The images should be mundane, nothing emotionally charged. Most people lose focus and drift off before finishing their word because the randomness of the exercise gently pulls the brain toward sleep. If a stressful thought pops up, take one breath and return to shuffling.

This works because your brain right before sleep naturally produces fragmented, random thoughts. Cognitive shuffling mimics that pattern, essentially tricking your brain into its pre-sleep state. It keeps your mind lightly occupied without stimulating it.

Try Staying Awake on Purpose

This sounds counterintuitive, but deliberately trying to stay awake can help you fall asleep faster. The technique is called paradoxical intention, and it works by removing the performance anxiety that builds when you’re lying in bed thinking “I need to fall asleep.” That pressure is often what’s keeping you up.

Lie in bed with the lights off, eyes open, and tell yourself your only job is to stay awake. Don’t reach for your phone or get up. Just lie still and resist sleep. In a clinical study, over 63% of participants using this approach saw clinically significant improvements in their insomnia scores, outperforming a control group that used conventional techniques. The idea is simple: falling asleep is not a voluntary process, and the moment you stop trying to control it, you make room for it to happen.

If 20 Minutes Pass, Get Out of Bed

One of the most well-supported principles in sleep science is this: don’t lie in bed awake for long stretches. If roughly 20 minutes pass and you’re still awake, get up. Go to another room. Do something quiet and low-stimulation: read a physical book (not on a screen), fold laundry, listen to calm music. Return to bed only when you feel genuinely sleepy again.
