Your conception date is the day a sperm fertilized your egg, and it typically falls within a narrow window around ovulation, roughly 12 to 16 days before your next period would have started. Pinpointing the exact day is difficult because fertilization happens invisibly inside the body, but you can estimate it to within a few days using your menstrual cycle, ovulation data, or an early ultrasound.
Why Conception Date Is Hard to Pin Down
Conception doesn’t necessarily happen on the day you had sex. Sperm survive inside the reproductive tract for up to five days, while a released egg lives for less than 24 hours. That means sex on a Monday could result in fertilization on a Thursday if the egg hadn’t been released yet. Any estimate of your conception date is really a best guess within a fertile window of about six days.
There’s also an important distinction between gestational age and fetal age. Doctors count pregnancy from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), which is typically about two weeks before conception actually occurred. So when your chart says “8 weeks pregnant,” the embryo has only been developing for roughly 6 weeks. Keeping this two-week offset in mind matters whenever you’re working backward from a due date or ultrasound measurement.
Estimating From Your Last Period
The simplest method starts with the first day of your last menstrual period. The standard medical formula assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14, placing conception about two weeks after that first day. If your cycles run on a predictable schedule, you can adjust accordingly. A woman who ovulates on day 18 of a 32-day cycle, for instance, would shift the estimated conception date four days later than the standard formula suggests.
This approach has clear limits. It assumes you remember your LMP accurately, that your cycle length is consistent, and that ovulation happened on a predictable day. For many people, one or more of those assumptions is off. Still, it gives you a reasonable starting point, accurate to within a week or so for people with regular cycles.
Using Ovulation Data for a Closer Estimate
If you were tracking ovulation when you conceived, you have a much tighter window to work with. The three most common tracking methods each offer different levels of precision.
- Ovulation predictor kits (OPK): These urine strips detect a surge in luteinizing hormone. When the test turns positive, ovulation typically occurs within 24 hours. If you got a positive OPK and had sex around that time, conception likely happened within a day or two of that positive result. These kits are less reliable for people with polycystic ovarian syndrome or other causes of irregular cycles.
- Basal body temperature (BBT): Your resting temperature rises by about half a degree Fahrenheit after ovulation and stays elevated. The catch is that by the time you see the temperature shift, ovulation has already passed. BBT is better at confirming ovulation after the fact than predicting it in advance, so it’s useful for narrowing down your conception date retroactively.
- Cervical mucus: Around ovulation, cervical mucus becomes heavy, wet, slippery, and stretchy, similar to raw egg whites. If you noticed that pattern and had intercourse during those days, conception likely occurred near the end of that mucus window, when the egg was released.
Combining methods gives the best estimate. If your OPK turned positive on cycle day 15 and your BBT rose on day 16, you can be fairly confident ovulation happened on day 15 or 16, placing conception within that 24-to-48-hour range.
Working Backward From a Due Date
If you already have a due date from your doctor, you can reverse-engineer an approximate conception date. The standard due date is set at 280 days (40 weeks) after the first day of the LMP, which means conception is assumed to have occurred 266 days before the due date. Count back 266 days from your due date, or roughly 38 weeks, and you’ll land on the estimated conception window.
For a quick shortcut: subtract two weeks from your gestational age at any point in pregnancy, and that’s roughly how long ago conception occurred.
First-Trimester Ultrasound Dating
An early ultrasound is the most reliable tool when your cycle is irregular, your LMP is uncertain, or you simply weren’t tracking ovulation. During the first trimester, a technician measures the embryo’s length to estimate how far along the pregnancy is. Earlier scans are more accurate because embryos grow at a very consistent rate in the first weeks.
Once you have a gestational age from ultrasound, subtract two weeks to estimate when conception occurred. For example, if an ultrasound at your first appointment says you’re 9 weeks pregnant, conception happened roughly 7 weeks ago. When menstrual dates and ultrasound dates disagree, most providers defer to the ultrasound if it was performed early enough, since it doesn’t rely on assumptions about cycle length or ovulation timing.
If Your Cycles Are Irregular
Irregular cycles make LMP-based estimates unreliable because the standard formula’s assumption of ovulation on day 14 may be wildly off. If your cycles vary by more than a week or you don’t remember your last period, a dating ultrasound is the recommended path. It measures the baby directly rather than relying on calendar math.
If you were using ovulation predictor kits or BBT tracking despite irregular cycles, that data is still valuable. The conception date calculation works the same way regardless of cycle length. What matters is knowing when ovulation actually happened, not when it theoretically should have.
Conception Date After IVF
For pregnancies conceived through IVF, the math is straightforward. The equivalent conception date equals the embryo transfer date minus the embryo’s age in days. If you had a 5-day embryo transfer on June 20, your conception date is June 15 (five days earlier, when fertilization occurred in the lab). The due date is then 266 days after that conception date. Your fertility clinic will calculate this for you, but it’s useful to understand the logic if you’re comparing timelines.
How Precise Can You Really Get?
Even under the best circumstances, most conception date estimates carry a margin of a few days. You can narrow the window to one or two days if you had a single instance of intercourse during your fertile window and confirmed ovulation with an OPK or BBT shift. But if you had sex on multiple days around ovulation, there’s no way to know which encounter provided the sperm that ultimately fertilized the egg.
For most practical purposes, knowing your conception date to within a week is sufficient. It helps you understand your pregnancy timeline, compare it with early ultrasound findings, and make sense of the gestational age your provider uses. If you need a precise date for personal or legal reasons, a first-trimester ultrasound combined with whatever ovulation data you have will give you the tightest possible range.
