Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you’re calm and still. A normal range for adults is 60 to 100 beats per minute, and you can measure yours in under two minutes with nothing but your fingers and a timer. Here’s how to do it accurately and what your number means.
Before You Measure
The conditions around your measurement matter as much as the technique. Your heart rate responds to stimulation from caffeine, physical activity, stress, and even your body position, so you need to control for those variables to get a true resting number.
Wait at least one to two hours after exercise or a stressful event before measuring. Wait an hour after drinking coffee or tea, since caffeine can raise your heart rate and trigger palpitations. Don’t measure after sitting or standing in one position for a long time, which can also skew your reading. The ideal moment is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed, when your body has been at rest for hours.
How to Take Your Pulse at the Wrist
The wrist (radial pulse) is the easiest and most reliable spot for most people. Use the tips of your index and middle fingers, not your thumb, which has its own pulse that can interfere with the count. Place those two fingertips on the inside of your opposite wrist, in the soft area between the wrist bone and the tendon on the thumb side. You should feel a steady tapping under the skin. Press lightly at first, then increase pressure slightly until the pulse is clear.
Once you have a strong pulse, count the beats for a full 60 seconds while watching a clock or timer. Some people prefer to count for 15 seconds and multiply by four, which is faster but slightly less accurate, especially if your heart rhythm is irregular. If you’re checking for the first time or tracking changes over time, the full 60-second count gives you the most dependable number.
How to Take Your Pulse at the Neck
If you have trouble finding your wrist pulse, the neck (carotid pulse) is a good alternative. Place your index and middle fingers in the groove next to your windpipe, on either side of your neck. The pulse here is usually stronger and easier to detect. Use the same light-to-moderate pressure and count for 60 seconds.
One caution with the neck: pressing too hard on the carotid artery can actually slow your heart rate temporarily, which would give you a falsely low reading. Keep your touch gentle.
Using a Device Instead
Fitness trackers, smartwatches, and pulse oximeters can all measure your heart rate automatically. Most wrist-worn devices use optical sensors that flash light into your skin and detect blood flow changes. They’re convenient for tracking trends over days and weeks, but individual readings can be thrown off by a loose band, tattoos, cold hands, or movement. If a device gives you a reading that seems unusually high or low, verify it manually at your wrist or neck before drawing any conclusions.
For a single accurate snapshot, the manual method is hard to beat. For spotting patterns over time, a wearable that logs your resting heart rate each morning is genuinely useful.
What Your Number Means
A resting heart rate between 60 and 100 bpm is considered normal for adults. Within that range, lower generally reflects better cardiovascular fitness. Your heart is a muscle, and when it’s strong, it pumps more blood per beat, so it doesn’t need to beat as often to keep up with your body’s demands.
Many factors shift your resting heart rate from day to day. Age, fitness level, medications, hydration, ambient temperature, and even altitude all play a role. Exposure to high altitude, for example, triggers your nervous system to speed up your heart rate to compensate for lower oxygen levels. Dehydration does something similar: with less blood volume, the heart has to work harder to circulate what’s available. A slightly elevated reading on a hot day or after a poor night’s sleep is not necessarily a sign of trouble.
When a Low Heart Rate Is Normal
Endurance athletes frequently have resting heart rates well below 60 bpm, and this is almost always a sign of a healthy, efficient heart rather than a problem. In a study of 465 endurance athletes, 38% had heart rates that dropped to 40 bpm or below during monitoring. Rates that low were well tolerated and caused no symptoms.
The threshold for concern is much lower. Current guidelines suggest that further evaluation is appropriate when an athlete’s heart rate drops below 30 bpm, which occurred in only 2% of the athletes studied. For non-athletes, a resting heart rate consistently below 60 bpm is worth mentioning to a doctor, though it’s often harmless, especially if you’re physically active and feel fine.
When a High Heart Rate Deserves Attention
A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is classified as tachycardia. Occasional spikes above 100 are normal and expected during stress, illness, or after caffeine. The key word is “consistently.” If your resting heart rate is regularly above 100 when you’re calm and haven’t had any stimulants, that pattern is worth investigating because it can signal thyroid issues, anemia, dehydration, or cardiac conditions.
A single high reading is not a diagnosis. Measure again the next morning under ideal conditions. If the pattern holds over several days, that’s meaningful information to share with your doctor.
How to Track Changes Over Time
A single measurement tells you where you are today. The real value comes from tracking your resting heart rate over weeks and months. Measure at the same time each day, ideally right after waking, in the same position (lying down or sitting). Record the number in a notebook or app.
Over time, you’ll see your personal baseline emerge. If you start a new exercise routine, you may notice your resting heart rate gradually drop by a few beats per minute over several weeks, a concrete sign of improving fitness. A sudden, sustained increase of 5 to 10 bpm above your personal baseline, without an obvious explanation like illness or stress, can be an early signal that something has changed, whether it’s overtraining, coming down with an infection, or a shift in your health worth paying attention to.
