Dentin contains thousands of microscopic tubes that lead directly to the tooth’s nerve. When hot coffee, cold air, or sweet foods reach those tubes, the fluid inside shifts and triggers a sharp, sudden pain. The good news: most sensitivity can be reduced or eliminated with the right combination of home care and, if needed, professional treatment.

Healthy enamel acts as a shield. Once it thins or chips, or once gums recede and leave root surfaces exposed, the dentin layer is no longer protected. Dentin is full of tiny fluid-filled channels. Heat causes that fluid to expand, cold causes it to contract, and both movements activate pressure-sensitive nerve endings deep inside the tooth. This is why the pain feels instant and sharp rather than dull or throbbing.
Understanding this mechanism matters because every effective treatment works in one of two ways: either blocking those tiny channels so fluid can’t move, or calming the nerve so it stops reacting. The approach you need depends on how severe your sensitivity is and what’s causing it.

Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing after an acidic meal or drink, because acid softens enamel temporarily, and brushing right away can scrub off the weakened surface layer.
Chewing sugar-free gum after meals stimulates saliva production, which naturally neutralizes acid and helps remineralize enamel. Pairing acidic foods with less acidic ones (cheese with fruit, for example) also reduces the overall acid load in your mouth.
Professional Treatments for Persistent Sensitivity
If home care hasn’t resolved your sensitivity after a few weeks, a dentist can apply stronger treatments in the office. The typical approach follows a stepwise progression: start simple, escalate only if needed.
Fluoride Varnish
A concentrated fluoride varnish painted directly onto sensitive areas is the preferred in-office treatment for moderate sensitivity. Severe Cases

How to Tell if It’s Something More Serious
Not all tooth pain is simple sensitivity. The distinction matters because some conditions need prompt treatment. Standard dentin sensitivity produces a sharp, fleeting pain that stops within seconds of removing the trigger, usually cold or sweets. The tooth doesn’t hurt when tapped, and heat doesn’t bother it.
If your pain lingers for more than 30 seconds after a hot or cold stimulus, that suggests the nerve inside the tooth may be inflamed in a way that won’t heal on its own. Sensitivity to heat specifically, pain when biting down, or a tooth that throbs unprompted are all signs of deeper inflammation. At that stage, a filling or desensitizing toothpaste won’t resolve the problem, and you’ll likely need either a root canal or extraction.
A cracked tooth can also mimic sensitivity but tends to produce a sharp pain on biting that releases when you stop. If your sensitivity is isolated to one tooth and started suddenly, a crack or a failing restoration is worth investigating.
A Practical Daily Routine for Sensitive Teeth
Consistency matters more than any single product. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristle brush and a desensitizing toothpaste containing either potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride. Use gentle pressure and angle bristles toward the gum line at about 45 degrees. Follow with a fluoride mouthwash. Floss daily, since plaque buildup along the gum line contributes to recession and inflammation that worsen sensitivity.
Limit soda, sports drinks, and citrus juices to mealtimes rather than sipping throughout the day. Rinse with water afterward. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard protects enamel from further wear. And if your sensitivity hasn’t improved after four to six weeks of consistent home care, schedule a dental visit. The stepwise approach, starting with simple solutions and progressing only as needed, resolves most cases before aggressive treatment becomes necessary.
