Asymmetrical crawling, where a baby favors one side of the body over the other, is common and often resolves on its own as your baby builds strength and coordination. Some babies drag one leg, scoot with only one foot doing the work, or use one arm more than the other. In most cases, this reflects a normal variation in how babies figure out movement. But certain patterns, especially when paired with other developmental differences, can signal something worth addressing.
What Asymmetrical Crawling Looks Like
Babies are creative movers, and not all asymmetry looks the same. The most common patterns parents notice include:
- One-leg drag: Your baby crawls on hands and knees but keeps one leg tucked or dragging behind instead of alternating evenly.

If your baby consistently sleeps with their head turned to one side, sits leaning one direction, or spends long stretches in a car seat or bouncer, muscles on one side may become shorter or weaker than the other. This imbalance naturally shows up during crawling because crawling demands coordinated, equal effort from both sides of the body.
Torticollis
Torticollis is a tightness in one of the neck muscles that causes a baby to tilt their head to one side and rotate it toward the opposite shoulder. It’s more common than many parents realize. Because the neck connects to the spine and trunk, this tightness can cascade downward. A baby with torticollis may develop a preference for one side of the body that shows up not just in head position but in how they roll, sit, and eventually crawl. The tighter side often becomes the weaker or less-used side during movement.
Hip Tightness or Positioning
If one hip is tighter or less mobile than the other, your baby may instinctively avoid bending or loading weight through that leg during crawling. This can look like a leg that stays straight or trails behind. Hip issues range from simple muscle tightness to more significant conditions, so persistent one-leg patterns are worth mentioning to your pediatrician.
How Flooring and Environment Play a Role
The surface your baby crawls on matters more than you might expect. Research comparing infant crawling across different floor types found that hardwood flooring produced significantly slower crawling speeds and longer hand contact times compared to textured surfaces like woven mats. Babies on slippery floors spend more effort stabilizing themselves, which can amplify any existing asymmetry since the weaker side struggles even more on a challenging surface.

Encourage reaching toward the weaker side. Place toys so your baby has to reach with the less-used arm or shift weight onto the less-used leg. During crawling, position a toy slightly off to the side they tend to avoid. This forces them to load weight through the weaker side to stay balanced while reaching.
Side-lying play. Have your baby lie on the stronger side so the weaker arm and leg are on top and free to move. This position naturally builds strength in the muscles that may be underperforming during crawling.
Supported kneeling at a low surface. A small box, low couch cushion, or coffee table lets your baby kneel and play while bearing weight evenly through both knees. This builds hip and core strength symmetrically without the coordination demands of crawling.
Wheelbarrow walks. Hold your baby’s legs or hips while they “walk” forward on their hands. This strengthens the arms and shoulders on both sides and builds the core stability needed for symmetrical crawling. Start with your hands at hip level and keep sessions short since this is tiring for little arms.
Gentle stretching during diaper changes. If you notice one hip or leg seems tighter, gently bicycle your baby’s legs and bring each knee toward the opposite shoulder. This isn’t aggressive stretching, just easy, playful range-of-motion movements that help keep both sides flexible.
When the Pattern Needs Professional Attention
Most babies who crawl asymmetrically are simply figuring things out and will self-correct. But certain signs suggest the asymmetry reflects something that benefits from early intervention.
NHS developmental guidelines flag asymmetrical reflexes as a concern as early as 6 weeks, and by 6 to 8 months, persistence of early reflexes, reduced muscle tone, or poor head control are considered red flags. By 12 months, a baby should be able to sit independently and bear weight when held standing. Delay across more than one area of development, such as movement and speech together, is more likely to be significant than a single quirk in crawling style.
Consider seeking a pediatric physical therapy evaluation if your baby shows a consistent, unchanging pattern of asymmetry for more than 3 to 4 weeks, seems unable (not just unwilling) to use one arm or leg, has noticeable differences in muscle tone between sides (one arm or leg feels stiffer or floppier than the other), or has lost a skill they previously had. Regression, at any age, is always worth investigating promptly.

Early treatment for conditions like torticollis is highly effective, and most babies respond well within a few months of consistent stretching and strengthening exercises. The earlier the intervention, the less time an asymmetrical pattern has to become a deeply ingrained habit that carries into walking.
What to Expect as Your Baby Progresses
Crawling is a transitional skill. Most babies crawl for only a few months before pulling to stand and cruising along furniture. If your baby’s asymmetry is mild and they’re progressing toward standing and walking on schedule, the crawling pattern itself often becomes irrelevant as they move on to upright movement.
That said, the underlying cause of asymmetrical crawling, whether it’s muscle tightness, a side preference, or a strength imbalance, doesn’t automatically disappear when walking begins. It can show up as a limp, toe-walking on one side, or a preference for one hand long before typical hand dominance develops (which usually emerges around age 2 to 3, not during infancy).
