Why Running Hurts Your Lower Back

Every time your foot strikes the ground, your spine absorbs two to three times your body weight in force. Your core muscles, particularly the deep stabilizers around your trunk and pelvis, act as a natural brace that distributes this load. When those muscles fatigue or lack endurance, your lumbar spine takes the hit directly. Over thousands of repetitions per run, that excess loading compresses the discs and irritates the surrounding tissues.

Weak glutes compound the problem. If your glute muscles aren’t firing well, your pelvis drops and tilts with each stride, forcing your lower back to compensate. These movements create stiffness and stability in the spine without the compressive forces that sit-ups produce.

The three exercises are the curl-up, the side bridge, and the bird dog. For each one, hold the position for eight to ten seconds per repetition rather than doing slow, sustained holds. Use a reverse pyramid structure: start with a set of eight reps, drop to six, then drop to four. As your endurance builds over weeks, increase to 10-8-6 or 12-10-8. Signs That Need Medical Attention
