Flossing with a permanent retainer takes a little extra effort because the wire blocks you from sliding floss straight down between your teeth the way you normally would. The solution is getting the floss underneath the wire first, then flossing each tooth individually. Once you learn the technique, it adds only a couple of minutes to your routine.
What Makes Flossing Harder
A permanent retainer is a thin metal wire bonded to the back of your front teeth, typically the lower six. Because the wire runs horizontally across those teeth, you can’t pull a strand of floss down from the top. You need to thread the floss behind the wire before you can reach the gum line. The method depends slightly on which type of retainer you have: some are bonded to every individual tooth, while others attach only to the two end teeth with the wire floating behind the ones in between.
The Floss Threader Method
A floss threader is a small, flexible loop (think of a plastic sewing needle) that carries regular floss under the retainer wire. You can find them at any pharmacy for a few dollars.
- Thread the floss. Pass a standard piece of floss through the loop of the threader, just like threading a needle.
- Insert the threader. Guide the stiff end of the threader between two teeth from the front side of your teeth, pushing it through until it comes out behind the retainer wire on the tongue side.
- Pull the floss through. Pull the threader all the way through so the floss now sits underneath the wire, between those two teeth.
- Floss normally. With the floss under the wire, curve it into a C shape against one tooth and slide it gently beneath the gum line, then repeat on the neighboring tooth.
- Remove and re-thread. Pull the floss out, loop it back through the threader, and move to the next pair of teeth.
If your retainer is bonded to every individual tooth, you’ll need to repeat this full process for each space between teeth. That’s the slower version, but it’s necessary because the floss can’t slide sideways past each bonding point.
If your retainer only attaches at the two end teeth (canines, usually), you get a shortcut. Thread the floss under the wire once, and from there you can slide it along behind all the teeth in between without re-threading. You still need to floss each gap, but you skip the repeated threading step.
Using Super Floss Instead
Super floss is designed specifically for situations like this. It’s a single product with three sections built into one strand: a stiff, plastic tip that acts as its own built-in threader, a thick spongy section for cleaning wider gaps and around the wire, and a regular floss section for standard flossing along the tooth surface. You skip the separate threader entirely because the rigid end feeds directly under the wire. Many people find this faster and simpler once they get used to it.
Water Flossers as a Supplement
A water flosser (like a Waterpik) shoots a pressurized stream of water that can reach behind the retainer wire without any threading at all. It’s effective at flushing out food particles and reducing plaque along the gum line. The American Association of Orthodontists lists water flossers alongside floss threaders and interdental brushes as appropriate tools for cleaning around a fixed wire.
Water flossers work well as a daily supplement, especially on days when you’re short on time or patience for the threading process. They’re more expensive upfront than a bag of floss threaders, but the convenience is real. Some people rely on a water flosser for daily maintenance and do a thorough manual floss two or three times a week. That said, the AAO recommends flossing and brushing between the wire and teeth every day, so the more consistent you can be with string floss, the better.
Interdental Brushes for Quick Cleaning
Small interdental brushes (the tiny bottle-brush style picks) can slide between teeth and behind the wire without any threading. They’re especially useful for dislodging food right after a meal. They don’t replace floss for cleaning tightly against the tooth surface below the gum line, but they’re a practical addition to your kit, particularly when you’re away from home.
Why It Matters More With a Retainer
The wire and bonding material create extra surfaces where plaque can accumulate. That plaque eventually hardens into calculus (tarite) if it’s not removed regularly, and the gum tissue around those lower front teeth can become inflamed. The retainer itself doesn’t automatically cause gum problems. Research comparing different retainer types found no significant differences in gum bleeding, pocket depth, or calculus buildup between designs. The variable that matters most is how well you clean around whatever retainer you have.
Daily flossing keeps the tissue healthy and prevents the hard buildup that your hygienist would otherwise need to scrape off at your next cleaning. It also lets you feel whether anything has changed with the retainer itself.
Signs Your Retainer Needs Attention
While you’re flossing, you’re in the best position to notice problems with the retainer. Pay attention if:
- The wire feels loose or wiggly. The bonding material can weaken over time, and a partially detached retainer can’t hold your teeth in place.
- The wire looks bent or broken. Even a small bend changes the forces on your teeth.
- Your gums feel persistently sore. Ongoing irritation along the gum line or against the tongue can mean the wire has shifted or a bonding point has failed.
- Your teeth feel like they’re shifting. If teeth start to feel crowded or crooked, the retainer may have partially detached from one or more teeth. This can happen gradually enough that you only notice it during flossing.
Any of these signs warrant a call to your orthodontist. A loose bond is a quick fix if caught early, but a fully detached wire left in place can allow teeth to drift noticeably within weeks.
Making It a Habit
The biggest obstacle isn’t technique. It’s that threading floss under a wire every single night feels tedious compared to regular flossing. A few things help. Keep your floss threaders (or super floss) right next to your toothbrush so there’s no extra step to find them. If you use a water flosser, fill the reservoir before you start brushing so it’s ready when you finish. And set realistic expectations: the full threading process for six teeth takes about three to five minutes once you’ve done it a few times. It feels slow the first week, then becomes automatic.
