How to Flush Alcohol Out of Your System: What Works

Your liver processes alcohol at a fixed rate of about one standard drink per hour, and there is no proven way to significantly speed that up. A standard drink means 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. If you’ve had four drinks, you’re looking at roughly four hours before your body fully clears the alcohol, regardless of what you do in the meantime.

That’s the honest answer most people don’t want to hear. But understanding why your body works this way, what actually helps even a little, and what’s a complete waste of time can save you from bad decisions.

Why Your Liver Sets the Pace

Alcohol is broken down in a two-step process. First, an enzyme in your liver converts ethanol into acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct and known carcinogen. A second enzyme then converts acetaldehyde into acetate, which your body can easily break down into water and carbon dioxide. These two enzymes do the vast majority of the work. A backup system kicks in after heavy drinking, but it handles only a fraction of the load.

This enzymatic process operates at a near-constant speed. Clinical research puts the average clearance rate at about 15 mg/dL per hour, and no amount of willpower, supplements, or tricks changes the capacity of those enzymes to work faster. Think of it like a single-lane toll booth: cars can only get through one at a time, no matter how long the line is.

What Actually Helps (a Little)

Nothing will dramatically accelerate your metabolism, but a few things can make a modest difference or at least keep you from making things worse.

Eat food. Having a solid meal in your stomach slows the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream, which prevents your BAC from spiking as high. Some research also suggests food slightly increases the rate your body eliminates alcohol once it’s absorbed. Eating won’t sober you up after a night of drinking, but eating before or during drinking genuinely blunts the peak.

Stop drinking. This sounds obvious, but alternating with water or stopping earlier in the night gives your liver a head start. Every additional drink resets the clock by another hour or more.

Sleep. Your liver keeps processing alcohol while you sleep. You won’t wake up with a BAC of zero if you only slept a few hours after heavy drinking, but giving your body a full night is the most realistic way to let time do its job. Waiting at least overnight before doing anything that requires alertness is the safest approach.

Hydrate. Water and electrolytes won’t speed up alcohol metabolism. A clinical study found that even intravenous saline, delivered directly into the bloodstream in a hospital setting, had no effect on ethanol clearance rates. But staying hydrated does reduce the severity of hangover symptoms like headache and fatigue, which helps you feel functional sooner even if your BAC drops at the same rate.

What Doesn’t Work

Exercise and sweating. Only about 2 to 5 percent of alcohol leaves your body through sweat, breath, and urine combined. The rest is processed by your liver. Running, sitting in a sauna, or doing jumping jacks won’t meaningfully move the needle. Worse, exercising while intoxicated increases your risk of dehydration, impaired coordination, and abnormal heart rhythms.

Coffee. Caffeine makes you feel more alert, which can trick you into thinking you’re sober. You’re not. Your BAC stays the same, and your reaction time and judgment remain impaired. A wide-awake drunk person is still a drunk person.

Cold showers. Same principle as coffee. The shock of cold water might jolt you into feeling more awake, but it has zero effect on how quickly your liver works through the alcohol in your blood.

“Detox” supplements and hangover pills. No commercially available supplement has been shown to meaningfully accelerate alcohol metabolism in humans. Some products contain B vitamins or amino acids that support liver health in general, but they don’t increase the speed of the enzymes that break down ethanol.

How Long Alcohol Stays Detectable

If you’re concerned about a test, the detection window depends on what’s being tested. A breathalyzer typically detects alcohol for 4 to 6 hours after your last drink, though it can register positive for up to 24 hours. A standard blood test picks up alcohol within the previous 12 hours.

Urine tests have a wider window. A basic ethanol urine test detects alcohol for about 12 hours, but more sensitive tests that look for metabolic byproducts (EtG and EtS tests) can detect evidence of drinking for 24 to 72 hours. The most sensitive blood test, which measures a compound that forms when alcohol interacts with cell membranes, can detect drinking from 1 to 3 weeks prior. Saliva tests generally work within a 24-hour window.

These timelines mean that even after you feel completely sober, traces of alcohol or its byproducts may still be present in your body depending on the type of test used.

Factors That Affect Your Personal Rate

The one-drink-per-hour rule is an average. Several factors shift it in either direction. Body size matters: a larger person has more blood volume, so the same amount of alcohol produces a lower BAC. Biological sex plays a role too, as women generally have less of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol in the stomach lining, leading to higher BAC from the same number of drinks.

Genetics are significant. The enzymes responsible for alcohol metabolism come in different variants across populations. Some people produce more active versions and clear alcohol faster. Others, particularly many people of East Asian descent, carry enzyme variants that cause acetaldehyde to build up, producing facial flushing and nausea. How often you drink also matters: regular heavy drinking activates a backup metabolic pathway that increases clearance slightly, though the liver damage from chronic drinking far outweighs any speed advantage.

When Alcohol Becomes an Emergency

If someone has been drinking heavily and shows signs of alcohol overdose, the priority shifts from “how do I sober up” to “how do I stay alive.” Warning signs include mental confusion, vomiting, seizures, breathing slower than 8 breaths per minute, gaps of 10 seconds or more between breaths, clammy skin, bluish skin color, and inability to stay conscious or be woken up.

A person doesn’t need to show all of these symptoms for the situation to be dangerous. Someone who has passed out from alcohol can die from choking on vomit, respiratory failure, or dangerously low body temperature. If you see even a few of these signs, call 911 immediately.
