You can’t flip a switch and permanently rewire your metabolism, but you can build habits that keep your calorie burn meaningfully higher for life. The real goal isn’t a “fast” metabolism in some abstract sense. It’s shifting the baseline of how much energy your body uses every day, through changes in body composition, movement patterns, eating habits, and sleep. Most of these changes compound over time, and several are surprisingly simple.

Weight gain during those decades is driven mostly by changes in activity level and eating habits, not by some inevitable metabolic slowdown. That’s actually good news, because it means the levers you can pull right now will keep working for decades.
Build Muscle to Raise Your Baseline
Muscle is the most reliable long-term way to increase resting calorie burn. Each pound of skeletal muscle burns about 6 calories per day at rest. That sounds modest, but it adds up in two ways. First, gaining 10 pounds of muscle over a year or two means roughly 60 extra resting calories per day, plus a proportional increase in calories burned during any movement. Protect Your Sleep
