Prices range from $1,000 to $2,500 per session, and no major insurance companies currently cover the cost. Here’s what you need to know before spending that money, including how the process works, what these scans can and can’t find, and whether the investment makes sense for you.

Where to Book a Full Body Scan

Full body scans for healthy, symptom-free adults are almost exclusively offered through private screening companies rather than your regular doctor’s office. Prenuvo is the most widely known national provider, with locations across major U.S. cities, but other concierge health centers and imaging clinics offer similar services. You don’t need a physician’s referral to book one. Most companies let you schedule directly through their website.

These scans use MRI technology, which creates detailed 3D images of your internal organs and structures using radio waves and magnetic fields rather than radiation. That’s a meaningful distinction from CT scans, which do expose you to ionizing radiation. MRI also provides better contrast between different types of soft tissue, making it the preferred choice for screening when you’re looking at organs, muscles, and the brain all in one session. Some scans include a contrast dye injected through an IV to improve image quality, though not all screening packages require it.

What the Scan Costs and Who Pays

These providers are working to collect long-term outcome data that might eventually convince insurers, but for now this is entirely a self-pay service.

How to Prepare for the Scan

Preparation is straightforward but involves a few firm rules. You’ll change into a gown at the facility since clothing with snaps, zippers, or any metal isn’t allowed in the scanner room. Remove all jewelry, hearing aids, and anything metallic before entering.

The more important preparation happens beforehand through a screening questionnaire. MRI machines use powerful magnets, and metal inside your body can be a serious safety hazard or distort your images. You’ll be asked about implanted devices including pacemakers, cochlear implants, artificial heart valves, joint replacements, metal plates, screws, pins, surgical staples, nerve stimulators, and drug infusion pumps. What Full Body Scans Can Detect

A full body MRI produces detailed images of your brain, spine, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It can visualize tumors, cysts, organ abnormalities, aneurysms, and structural issues across most of the body. For people with specific genetic conditions that raise cancer risk across multiple organ systems, such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome or neurofibromatosis, whole body MRI screening can be a genuinely useful surveillance tool.

For the average healthy adult, the detection picture is less impressive. Research shows that whole body MRIs detect actual cancers in only 1% to 2% of people screened. Fred Hutch Cancer Center notes there is no strong evidence that whole body MRI screening improves cancer survival or other health outcomes in people without symptoms. One of the biggest concerns is false reassurance: you could receive a clean result that misses a real problem, because MRI isn’t equally sensitive to every type of cancer in every location.

The Problem With Incidental Findings

This is the part most screening companies don’t emphasize. When researchers reviewed 12 studies of patients undergoing whole body MRI, 95% of them had at least one abnormal finding. But 91% of those findings turned out to be clinically irrelevant. That’s an enormous number of people being told something looks “off” when nothing is actually wrong.

A large meta-analysis published in The BMJ found that about 3.9% of apparently healthy adults had a potentially serious incidental finding on brain and body MRI. That number rose to nearly 13% when including findings of uncertain seriousness. The critical follow-up data is sobering: among participants whose incidental findings were actually tracked to a final diagnosis, only about one in five turned out to be clinically serious. Half remained indeterminate, meaning patients were left in a “wait and see” limbo that often involved repeat imaging, biopsies, or specialist visits with no clear resolution.

Each of those follow-up tests costs money, takes time, and generates its own anxiety. Some involve real physical risk, like biopsies of lesions that would never have caused harm. This cascade of unnecessary follow-up is the primary reason major medical organizations remain skeptical of screening scans for healthy people.

What Medical Organizations Say

The American College of Radiology does not recommend total body screening MRI for patients with no symptoms, risk factors, or family history suggesting underlying disease. Their position is clear: there is no documented evidence that total body screening is cost-efficient or effective in prolonging life. Their chief concern is that these scans generate large numbers of nonspecific findings that lead to unnecessary follow-up testing and expense without improving health outcomes.

This doesn’t mean full body MRI is useless. It means the balance of benefits and harms hasn’t been proven favorable for the general population. If you have a strong family history of cancer, a known genetic predisposition, or other specific risk factors, the calculus may be different. In those cases, your doctor may actually recommend periodic whole body imaging as part of a structured surveillance plan.

Making the Decision

If you’re considering a full body scan, go in with realistic expectations. Before booking, consider whether you’re up to date on the proven screening tests that insurance does cover: colonoscopy, mammography, lung CT for heavy smokers, cervical screening, and prostate screening based on your age and risk profile. These targeted tests have decades of evidence showing they catch specific cancers early enough to improve survival. A full body MRI doesn’t replace any of them, and for most people, staying current on evidence-based screenings offers more reliable protection than a single expensive scan.
