How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Oklahoma

Oklahoma makes it relatively straightforward to get a medical marijuana card. There’s no list of qualifying conditions. If a licensed physician believes medical marijuana could help you, they can sign a recommendation form, and you submit that along with your application to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA). The entire process can be completed online, and OMMA processes patient applications within 14 business days.

No Qualifying Conditions List

Unlike most states with medical marijuana programs, Oklahoma does not require you to have a specific diagnosis from an approved list. The decision rests entirely with your physician. If they determine that medical marijuana is appropriate for your situation and follow the same standards they’d use when recommending any other medication, they can sign your recommendation form. This makes Oklahoma’s program one of the most accessible in the country.

Getting a Physician Recommendation

The physician recommendation is the single most important piece of your application. You’ll need a doctor to complete and sign the official Adult Patient Physician Recommendation Form, which is available as a PDF on the OMMA website.

Not just any doctor qualifies. The physician must be licensed and in good standing with the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision, the Board of Osteopathic Examiners, or the Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners. They also cannot be located at the same physical address as a dispensary, including for virtual appointments. Starting January 1, 2026, recommending physicians must also be registered with OMMA and have completed medical marijuana education requirements.

Many clinics in Oklahoma specialize in medical marijuana evaluations, and telehealth appointments are common. You can typically get an appointment and recommendation the same day. The cost for the doctor visit itself varies by provider but generally runs between $100 and $200, separate from the state application fee.

Documents You’ll Need

Before starting your application, gather the following:

  • Signed Physician Recommendation Form (the official OMMA form, not a generic letter)
  • Proof of identity (one of these): unexpired Oklahoma driver’s license or state ID card (front, in color), a tribal ID accepted by the Department of Public Safety, or a U.S. passport or other federal photo ID
  • Proof of Oklahoma residency (one of these): the previous year’s Oklahoma state tax return, a utility bill from the calendar month before your application (no cell phone, TV, or internet bills), a residential property deed, or a current Oklahoma rental agreement
  • An acceptable photo for your license card

If you use an Oklahoma driver’s license or state ID, it counts for both identity and residency, so you only need that one document plus your physician form and photo.

Submitting Your Application

Applications are submitted online through the OMMA portal at oklahoma.gov/omma. You’ll upload digital copies of your documents, fill in your personal information, and pay the application fee by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover credit or debit card. A small credit card processing fee is added to the transaction. Application and processing fees are non-refundable, even if your application isn’t approved.

OMMA processes patient applications within 14 business days. You can check your application status on their website at any time.

What Your Card Lets You Possess

Once approved, your medical marijuana license authorizes you to carry and store specific amounts:

  • On your person: up to 3 ounces (about 85 grams) of marijuana flower
  • At home: up to 8 ounces (about 226 grams) of marijuana flower
  • Concentrates: up to 1 ounce (about 28 grams)
  • Edibles: up to 72 ounces (about 4.5 pounds)

These limits are generous compared to many other states. You’re also allowed to grow a limited number of plants at your residence for personal use.

Renewals

Your license isn’t permanent, so you’ll need to renew it before it expires. The renewal window opens 120 days before your expiration date. To be considered timely, your renewal application must be submitted between 120 and 60 days before expiration. Don’t wait until the last minute, as a late submission could leave you without a valid license while you wait for processing. The renewal process is similar to the initial application and requires a new physician recommendation.

Licenses for Minors

Oklahoma residents age 17 and younger can also get a medical marijuana patient license, but the requirements are stricter. Instead of one physician signature, the Minor Patient Physician Recommendation Form requires signatures from two registered physicians. The minor will also need the standard proof of identity, proof of residency, and a photo. A parent or legal guardian must be involved in the application process as the designated caregiver.

Out-of-State Visitors

If you already hold a valid, government-issued medical marijuana license from another state, you can apply for an Oklahoma temporary patient license. These cost $100 (no reduced fee available), last 30 days, and let you buy, use, and grow medical marijuana while in Oklahoma. You cannot get a 60-day or two-year temporary license. The key requirement is that your home state license must be active and issued by a state government, not just a doctor’s recommendation.
