How to Get an Allergy Test: Types, Cost & Results

Getting an allergy test typically starts with a visit to your primary care doctor or an allergist, who will recommend one of several testing methods based on your symptoms. The most common options are skin prick testing, blood testing, and patch testing, each suited to different types of allergies. Costs without insurance range from $60 to $1,500 depending on the method and how many allergens are tested.

Types of Allergy Tests

There are three main clinical tests, and the right one depends on what you think you’re reacting to.

Skin prick testing is the most widely used method for environmental and food allergies. A clinician places small drops of allergen solutions on your forearm, spaced about 2 cm apart, then uses a tiny lancet to push each drop just below the skin surface. Within 15 to 20 minutes, any allergen you’re sensitive to will produce a small raised bump called a wheal. A wheal 3 mm or larger in diameter is generally considered a positive result. The whole appointment usually takes under an hour. For airborne allergens like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander, skin prick testing is highly accurate, with sensitivity and specificity between 70% and 97%. For food allergens, accuracy is more variable, ranging from 30% to 90%.

Blood testing measures the level of allergy-related antibodies (IgE) circulating in your blood against specific triggers. It’s a standard blood draw, and results come back from a lab. Blood tests are particularly useful when skin testing isn’t practical: if you have widespread eczema that would interfere with reading results, if you can’t stop taking antihistamines, or if you’ve had a severe allergic reaction and skin testing feels too risky. Sensitivity to common food allergens like egg, peanut, and milk is generally high, but specificity can be low (38% to 59%), meaning false positives are common.

Patch testing is specifically for contact allergies, the kind that cause skin rashes from things like nickel jewelry, fragrances, preservatives, or hair dyes. Small patches containing suspected allergens are taped to your back and left in place for 48 hours. You return to have them removed, then come back again at 72 to 96 hours for a final reading. This test requires three visits over several days, so plan accordingly.

How to Prepare for Your Test

The most important preparation step is stopping antihistamines. Baylor Medicine recommends discontinuing antihistamines at least 7 days before skin testing. This includes both older antihistamines (like diphenhydramine) and newer ones (like cetirizine and loratadine), as well as combination cold medications that contain them. If you’re unsure whether a medication you take could interfere, call the allergist’s office before your appointment rather than stopping anything on your own.

Beta-blockers, commonly prescribed for high blood pressure or heart conditions, are a separate concern. They don’t affect the test itself, but they can make it harder to treat a severe allergic reaction if one occurs during testing. Your allergist will want to know about these medications in advance.

Who Should Skip Skin Testing

Skin prick testing isn’t safe or useful for everyone. People with severe or unstable asthma face a higher risk of serious reactions during the procedure. Those with a skin condition called dermatographism, where the skin welts up from any pressure, will get misleading results because every prick site will swell regardless of allergy. Extensive eczema or other skin conditions that leave little clear skin on the forearms can also make the test unreadable. In all of these situations, blood testing is the better route.

Skin prick testing is rarely done on infants younger than 6 months, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Beyond that age, there’s no minimum age requirement.

What a Positive Result Actually Means

A positive skin prick or blood test doesn’t automatically mean you have a clinical allergy. It means your immune system has produced antibodies against that substance, a state called sensitization. You can be sensitized to something and never have symptoms when you encounter it. This is why allergists interpret test results alongside your history of actual reactions. A positive test for peanut combined with a history of hives after eating peanut butter is a clear diagnosis. A positive test for peanut with no history of any reaction is not.

False negatives are uncommon in allergy testing. The more frequent problem is false positives, especially with blood tests and food allergen panels. Broad screening panels that test for dozens of foods at once tend to generate the most misleading results, flagging sensitivities that don’t translate to real-world symptoms.

Oral Food Challenges

When skin and blood tests leave the diagnosis uncertain, an oral food challenge is the definitive answer. This is considered the gold standard for food allergy diagnosis. You eat gradually increasing amounts of the suspected food in a medical setting while a provider monitors you for reactions. Doses are given 15 to 30 minutes apart, starting very small (sometimes as little as 1% of a full serving for high-risk patients) and building up over several hours.

Because reactions during a food challenge can be severe, the procedure requires specific safety conditions. Emergency medications must be dosed and ready before testing begins. Vital signs are checked at baseline. You need to be healthy on the day of the challenge, with no fever, active coughing, or wheezing. If you’ve needed a rescue inhaler in the previous 48 hours, the challenge will be rescheduled. This isn’t something you do on your own at home.

At-Home Allergy Test Kits

Direct-to-consumer allergy kits are widely available online. Some are certified under federal laboratory standards and use the same IgE blood testing technology as clinical labs. However, the evidence supporting their accuracy across a broad population is limited. Researchers at the University of Colorado noted that in clinical experience, at-home test results have generally not been helpful to patients, though some individuals may find them useful as a starting point.

The core problem isn’t necessarily the lab work itself. It’s the interpretation. Without a clinician matching your results to your symptom history, a list of positive IgE results can lead to unnecessary food avoidance or anxiety about allergens that don’t actually affect you. If you use an at-home kit and get positive results, you’ll still need a clinical evaluation to determine whether those results reflect true allergies.

Cost Without Insurance

Skin prick testing typically costs between $60 and $300 out of pocket, making it the most affordable clinical option. Blood testing runs higher, from about $200 to $1,000 depending on how many allergens are included in the panel. All-in costs including the office visit, testing, and interpretation can reach $1,500 or more for comprehensive panels. Most health insurance plans cover allergy testing when ordered by a physician with a documented medical reason, so check with your plan before assuming you’ll pay full price.

Getting Started

You have two paths. Your primary care doctor can order blood allergy tests directly and refer you to an allergist if results warrant further investigation. Or you can see an allergist directly, which many insurance plans allow without a referral. An allergist can perform skin prick testing in the office during your first or second visit, giving you same-day results. If your symptoms point toward contact dermatitis (rashes from skin contact with products or materials), ask specifically for a referral to a dermatologist or allergist who offers patch testing, as not all practices have it available.
