WatchPAT One results are not available directly to you through the app. After your sleep data uploads to the cloud, the system auto-scores it and generates a report that goes to your healthcare provider, who then reviews and shares it with you. The upload itself happens automatically through the WatchPAT app on your phone, but the timeline for actually receiving your results depends on how quickly your provider reviews the report and contacts you.
How Your Data Gets Uploaded
During the night, the WatchPAT One device continuously transmits recorded data to the app on your phone via Bluetooth. The app immediately uploads that data to the cloud server whenever your phone has internet access. If your Wi-Fi or cellular connection drops during the night, the app stores the data locally and uploads it once connectivity returns.
In the morning, the app displays an “End Recording” button. After you press it, the device still needs to finish transmitting its remaining data. Keep the device close to your phone and don’t close the app until you see the Test Completion screen. If the transfer needs more time, the app will show a progress indicator and ask you to wait. You’ll know everything transferred successfully when the LED on the device blinks a steady green.
When to Expect Your Results
Once the data reaches the server, the system auto-scores it, meaning software analyzes your sleep data and generates a detailed report without manual processing. This automated step is fast, typically completing within hours of a successful upload. The bottleneck is your provider. Some clinics review and release results within a few days, while others may take a week or two depending on their workflow. If you haven’t heard anything after a week, contact the office that ordered your test.
What the Report Measures
The WatchPAT One records seven channels of data from just three points of contact on your body: a finger probe, a wrist unit, and a chest sensor. Those channels capture your arterial tone (a measure of blood vessel changes tied to breathing disruptions), heart rate, blood oxygen levels, body movement, body position, snoring intensity, and chest motion.
The key numbers on your report include:
- AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index): The number of times per hour your breathing partially or fully stops during sleep. This is the primary number used to diagnose sleep apnea severity.
- RDI (Respiratory Disturbance Index): Similar to AHI but includes subtler breathing disruptions that don’t fully meet the threshold for apneas or hypopneas.
- ODI (Oxygen Desaturation Index): How often per hour your blood oxygen drops by 3% or more, reflecting how much your breathing disruptions affect oxygen delivery.
- Sleep staging: A breakdown of your light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep periods.
One advantage of the WatchPAT system is that it calculates these numbers using “True Sleep Time” rather than total recording time. Most home sleep tests can’t distinguish between lying awake and actually sleeping, so they divide breathing events by the entire recording period. The WatchPAT uses motion sensing to filter out time you spent awake, which gives a more accurate per-hour count.
How to Read Your AHI Score
Your AHI is the number your provider will focus on most. The standard severity categories are:
- Normal: fewer than 5 events per hour
- Mild sleep apnea: 5 to 14.9 events per hour
- Moderate sleep apnea: 15 to 29.9 events per hour
- Severe sleep apnea: 30 or more events per hour
The report also distinguishes between obstructive events (where your airway physically collapses) and central events (where your brain briefly stops sending the signal to breathe). This distinction matters because the two types can require different treatment approaches. You may see a separate “central AHI” figure on your report that breaks out those events.
How Accurate the Results Are
The WatchPAT’s AHI and RDI scores show an 89% correlation with polysomnography, the overnight lab study considered the gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea. The arterial tone signal it relies on is recognized in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s clinical guidelines for home sleep testing in adults with suspected obstructive sleep apnea.
Sleep staging is less precise. Studies comparing the WatchPAT to lab-based sleep studies found overall agreement of about 63% for identifying specific sleep stages like light, deep, and REM sleep. This is a known limitation of any wrist-worn device compared to the brain wave monitoring used in a lab. For most patients, though, the breathing event data is the clinically important part, and the sleep staging provides useful context rather than a primary diagnosis.
If Your Data Doesn’t Upload
The most common issue is closing the app before the data transfer finishes. If the app hasn’t shown you the Test Completion screen, the transfer is still in progress. Reopen the app with the device nearby and give it time to complete. The app will resume uploading stored data once it reconnects to the internet.
If the device LED never turns to a steady green blink, the transfer may not have completed. Keep Bluetooth enabled on your phone, make sure you have a stable internet connection, and leave the app open. If problems persist, contact the provider who gave you the device. They can often check on the server side whether partial data was received or whether you need to repeat the test.
