How to Get CNA Certified: Steps, Costs & Timeline

Getting CNA certified involves three main steps: completing a state-approved training program, passing a two-part competency exam, and applying to your state’s nurse aide registry. The entire process typically takes two to four months from start to finish, and in some cases you can complete it without paying out of pocket.

Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements

Most states require CNA candidates to be at least 16 years old. A high school diploma or GED is not universally required at the federal level, though some states and individual training programs do ask for one. You will need to pass a criminal background check, which in most states means submitting fingerprints through a Live Scan or fingerprint card process. If you have certain offenses on your record, particularly those involving abuse, neglect, or theft, you may be disqualified from working in a healthcare facility.

Complete a State-Approved Training Program

Federal law requires all CNA training programs to include a minimum of 75 hours of instruction, with at least 16 of those hours spent in supervised clinical training at a healthcare facility. However, most states set their requirements well above that floor. Texas, for example, requires 100 hours (60 classroom, 40 clinical). California programs often run even longer, with one community college program logging 66 hours of theory and 108 hours of clinicals.

Training programs are offered at community colleges, vocational schools, the American Red Cross, and many nursing homes. The coursework covers essential patient care skills: taking vital signs, assisting with bathing and dressing, infection control, proper body mechanics for lifting and repositioning, and basic nutrition. The clinical portion places you in a real nursing facility under the supervision of a licensed nurse, where you practice these skills with actual residents.

Program length varies depending on the schedule. Full-time, accelerated programs can wrap up in as little as three to four weeks for the classroom portion, with another six to seven weeks for clinicals. Part-time or evening programs may stretch over three to four months. Community college programs commonly run through a single semester or over a summer session.

What Training Costs (and How to Avoid Paying)

Tuition for CNA programs typically ranges from about $500 to $1,500 or more depending on the institution and state. Florida State College at Jacksonville, for instance, charges $1,228 for its full program. Exam fees, textbooks, scrubs, and supplies add to the total.

But here’s something many candidates don’t realize: federal law prohibits nursing homes from charging you for training or testing if you’re already employed by the facility or have a job offer from one when you start the program. This means if a nursing home hires you and sends you through their in-house training, the entire cost is covered.

Even if you pay for training on your own, there’s a reimbursement rule. If you get hired at a nursing facility within 12 months of completing your program, the state must arrange for your training and exam costs to be reimbursed on a prorated basis for the time you work there. Many nursing homes also offer tuition reimbursement or free training as a recruitment tool, so it’s worth asking facilities in your area before enrolling in a program independently. Workforce development programs, Pell Grants (at community colleges), and state-funded scholarships are additional options.

Pass the Two-Part Competency Exam

After finishing your training program, you’ll take the state competency exam. This is the test that actually earns you certification. It has two parts, and you need to pass both.

The written exam (or oral exam, if you request that option) contains 70 multiple-choice questions. Of those, 60 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items being evaluated for future use. You won’t know which questions are which, so treat every question seriously. The questions cover the same material from your training: patient rights, infection control, communication, safety, personal care, and basic nursing skills.

The skills evaluation requires you to physically demonstrate five randomly selected nursing aide skills in front of an evaluator. You might be asked to measure a blood pressure, make an occupied bed, provide mouth care, or assist with ambulation. Each skill must be performed correctly and in the proper sequence. The evaluator uses a checklist, and missing a critical step (like failing to wash your hands or not identifying the patient) results in a failed skill.

Testing is administered by third-party companies that contract with state agencies. Credentia runs the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam in many states, including North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Iowa. Other states use Prometric or Pearson VUE. Your training program will tell you which testing company handles your state’s exam and how to register.

If you fail one part, most states allow you to retake just that portion without repeating the other. You typically get three attempts before being required to retake training.

Get Listed on Your State Registry

Once you pass both parts of the exam, your name is added to your state’s nurse aide registry. This is the official record that employers check to verify your certification. Some states mail a physical certificate while others maintain an online-only registry. Processing times vary, but you can generally expect to be listed within a few weeks of passing.

Your certification must be renewed every two years. The renewal requirement is straightforward: you need to have worked at least a minimum number of paid hours performing nursing-related services in a licensed healthcare facility during the previous 24-month period. New Jersey, for example, requires just seven hours of paid work within those two years. If your certification lapses because you haven’t worked, most states require you to retake the competency exam (and in some cases, retrain entirely) before you can be relisted.

Moving Your Certification to Another State

CNA certifications don’t automatically transfer across state lines, but most states offer a reciprocity process that lets you move your active certification without retaking training or the exam. The general steps involve submitting an application to the new state, providing proof of your current certification (a copy of your certificate or a screenshot from the sending state’s online registry), passing a new background check, and in some cases showing proof that you’ve worked as a CNA within the past two years.

California’s process is a good example of what to expect. You complete a reciprocity application, submit fingerprints, provide a copy of your out-of-state certificate, and show proof of recent nursing-related work under the supervision of a licensed professional (unless your certificate was issued within the last two years). The new state then verifies everything with your original state and issues a new certificate. Timelines range from a few weeks to a couple of months depending on processing backlogs.

How Long the Full Process Takes

If you’re starting from scratch, a realistic timeline looks like this: one to three months for training, depending on whether you choose a full-time or part-time schedule. Then a few weeks to schedule and take your competency exam. After passing, another two to four weeks for registry processing. Most people go from enrollment to certified in roughly two to four months total. Accelerated summer programs can compress this to about 10 weeks if everything lines up.

The fastest route is getting hired at a nursing home that provides in-house training. You start earning a paycheck immediately, complete your required hours on the facility’s schedule, and take the exam with your training costs fully covered.
