Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep or stage 3 NREM sleep, is defined by large, synchronized brain waves below 4.5 Hz. Your breathing and heart rate become regular, your nervous system shifts into a rest-and-repair mode, and key brain chemicals like dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin drop to their lowest levels.
