The fastest way to get mucus out of your sinuses is a saline nasal rinse, which physically flushes out thick mucus and reduces swelling at the same time. But there are several other effective methods, from steam and pressure-point massage to positioning and over-the-counter options, and combining a few of them works better than relying on just one. Here’s what actually moves mucus and how to do each technique properly.
Why Mucus Gets Stuck in the First Place
Your sinuses are lined with millions of tiny hair-like structures called cilia that beat in coordinated waves to push mucus toward your throat, where you swallow it without thinking. This self-cleaning system runs constantly and depends on two things: the cilia beating fast enough and the mucus being thin enough to move.
When you’re congested from a cold, allergy, or infection, the lining of your sinuses swells and narrows the drainage openings. At the same time, your body ramps up mucus production, and the mucus itself often becomes thicker. The cilia can’t push heavy, sticky mucus through a half-closed opening, so it pools. That pressure and fullness you feel is mucus with nowhere to go. Every method below works by addressing one or both sides of the problem: thinning the mucus, reducing the swelling, or physically moving the mucus out.
Saline Nasal Rinse
A saline rinse is the single most effective home method because it does everything at once. Saltwater physically washes out mucus, moisturizes irritated tissue, and a slightly concentrated solution can pull fluid out of swollen membranes to open your drainage pathways. You can use a squeeze bottle, neti pot, or bulb syringe.
For a standard rinse, mix about 0.9% saline (roughly a quarter teaspoon of non-iodized salt per 8 ounces of water). If your congestion is severe, a hypertonic solution of 2 to 3% (closer to half a teaspoon per 8 ounces) draws more fluid from swollen tissue and provides stronger decongestion.
Water Safety Is Critical
Never use plain tap water for a nasal rinse. Tap water can contain organisms, including a rare but dangerous amoeba called Naegleria fowleri, that are harmless to swallow but potentially fatal when introduced directly into your nasal passages. The CDC recommends using store-bought distilled or sterilized water, or tap water that has been boiled at a rolling boil for at least 1 minute (3 minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet) and then cooled. If neither option is available, you can disinfect water with unscented household bleach: for bleach with 6% to 8.25% sodium hypochlorite, add 4 drops per quart and let it stand for at least 30 minutes before use.
Steam and Humidity
Warm, moist air loosens thick mucus and soothes inflamed tissue. The simplest approach is a hot shower with the bathroom door closed, breathing slowly through your nose for 10 to 15 minutes. You can also lean over a bowl of steaming water with a towel draped over your head, keeping your face about 12 inches from the surface to avoid burns.
If your home air is dry, a humidifier helps keep mucus from thickening between active treatments. The ideal indoor humidity for sinus comfort is between 30% and 50%. Below 30%, mucus dries and becomes harder to move. Above 50%, you risk mold growth, which can trigger the congestion you’re trying to fix.
Sinus Pressure-Point Massage
Gentle pressure on specific spots around your nose and forehead can stimulate drainage and temporarily relieve that heavy, full-face feeling. These work best right after steam or a saline rinse, when mucus has already been loosened.
- Between your eyebrows (frontal sinuses): Press firmly with your index finger at the bridge of your nose, right between the brows. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds, release, and repeat.
- Along the brow bone: Starting at the inner edge of each eyebrow, gently pinch the brow between your thumb and index finger. Hold for a second or two, then slide slightly outward toward your temples. It takes about four or five pinches to work across the full brow.
- Beside the nostrils (maxillary sinuses): Place your index fingers on either side of your nose where it meets your cheeks. Press inward and slightly upward for 5 to 10 seconds. You can also use small circular motions here, doing about five circles per session.
Positioning and Gravity
Gravity is a free tool that makes a noticeable difference, especially at night. Elevating your head and shoulders above the rest of your body allows mucus to drain downward rather than pooling in your sinuses. You don’t need to sleep sitting up. An extra pillow or two, or a wedge pillow that raises your upper body at an angle, is enough.
If one side is more congested than the other, sleeping on the opposite side (stuffy nostril facing up) helps that side drain. Combining side-sleeping with head elevation gives you the best gravity-assisted relief overnight.
Hydration
Mucus is mostly water. When you’re dehydrated, it becomes thicker and stickier, making it harder for your cilia to push it along. Drinking warm fluids like tea, broth, or just warm water does double duty: it keeps you hydrated and the warmth itself helps loosen secretions. There’s no magic amount, but if your urine is dark, you’re not drinking enough to keep mucus thin.
Over-the-Counter Options
Guaifenesin, the active ingredient in most expectorants, works by thinning mucus so it moves more easily. It’s commonly associated with chest congestion, but it thins secretions throughout the respiratory tract, including the sinuses. The standard adult dose is 200 to 400 mg every four hours for regular-release tablets, or 600 to 1200 mg every twelve hours for extended-release versions.
Decongestant nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline shrink swollen tissue fast, often within minutes, and can be useful when your sinuses are so blocked that a saline rinse can’t even get through. The critical limit is three days of use. After that, the spray triggers rebound congestion, a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa, where your nasal passages swell worse than before and you feel dependent on the spray to breathe. Use these sprays as a short bridge to get other methods working, not as a long-term fix.
Oral decongestants (like pseudoephedrine) also reduce swelling, though they take longer to kick in and can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Antihistamines help only if allergies are the underlying cause. If your congestion is from a cold or infection, antihistamines can actually dry out mucus and make it harder to drain.
Signs That Home Methods Aren’t Enough
Most sinus congestion is caused by a virus and clears up within 7 to 10 days. Two patterns suggest a bacterial infection has developed: symptoms that haven’t improved at all after 10 days, or symptoms that start to get better and then noticeably worsen again (sometimes called “double worsening”). Thick, discolored mucus alone doesn’t reliably distinguish viral from bacterial, but either of those timelines, especially with facial pain, fever, or severe pressure, warrants a visit to your doctor. Bacterial sinusitis typically requires antibiotics to resolve.
