Daily Habits That Make the Biggest Difference

Wash your feet with soap every time you shower, scrubbing between your toes and across the soles. A lot of people let soapy water run over their feet and call it done, but that doesn’t remove the bacterial buildup where odor concentrates. After washing, dry your feet completely, especially between the toes. Residual moisture kickstarts the whole cycle again.

Rotate your shoes. Wearing the same pair two days in a row doesn’t give them enough time to dry out fully. Alternating between at least two pairs lets each one air out for 24 hours or more. Change your socks at least once a day. If you sweat heavily, switching to a fresh pair midday can cut odor in half. Keep a spare pair in your bag or desk drawer.

Antiperspirants and Powders for Feet

The same antiperspirant you use under your arms works on your feet. Products containing aluminum chloride block sweat glands temporarily, reducing the moisture bacteria need to thrive. For mild sweating, a regular-strength roll-on applied to clean, dry soles before bed does the job. Leave it on for six to eight hours overnight, then wash it off in the morning.

For heavier sweating, clinical-strength formulas contain higher concentrations of aluminum chloride. Apply nightly until you notice improvement, then reduce to once or twice a week for maintenance. If that still isn’t enough, wrapping your feet in plastic wrap after applying the antiperspirant (a technique called occlusion) pushes more of the active ingredient into the sweat glands.
