The fastest way to get phlegm out of your chest is to combine proper hydration, controlled coughing techniques, and body positioning that lets gravity do the work. Most people can feel noticeable relief within 15 to 30 minutes using these methods together. Here’s what actually works and why.
Drink Water First
Hydration is the single most effective way to thin the mucus sitting in your chest. A study from the University Hospital of Zurich measured mucus viscosity in patients before and after drinking one liter of water over two hours. The results were striking: mucus thickness dropped by roughly 70%, and 85% of patients reported feeling immediate symptom relief. Thinner mucus is far easier to cough up because it doesn’t cling to the walls of your airways as stubbornly.
Warm liquids may offer an extra edge. Hot tea, broth, or warm water with honey can stimulate saliva and mucus secretion in the airways, loosening congestion further. Cold water still works for hydration, but warmth adds a soothing, loosening effect you can feel almost immediately.
Use the Huff Cough Technique
Regular coughing can be exhausting and sometimes just pushes phlegm around without actually bringing it up. The huff cough is a technique used in respiratory therapy that’s more effective and less tiring. Here’s how to do it:
- Sit upright and take a slow, medium-depth breath (not a deep gasp).
- Hold briefly, then exhale forcefully in short bursts while making a “huff” sound, as if you’re fogging up a mirror.
- Repeat one or two more times, then follow with one strong, deliberate cough to push mucus out of the larger airways.
Run through this cycle two or three times depending on how congested you feel. Rapid inhales can suck mucus back down and trigger uncontrolled coughing fits, which defeats the purpose.
Let Gravity Help With Positioning
Postural drainage uses gravity to move phlegm from the smaller airways deeper in your lungs toward the larger airways where you can cough it out. The idea is simple: position your body so the congested part of your lungs is above your mouth.
For general chest congestion, the most accessible position is lying face down with a pillow under your hips so your chest is angled downward. Stay for 5 to 15 minutes, breathing steadily, then sit up and use the huff cough technique. If congestion feels more on one side, lie on the opposite side with a pillow under your waist to tilt the congested lung upward. Different positions drain different lobes of the lungs, so experimenting with lying on your back, stomach, or each side can help you find what moves the most mucus.
You can add light percussion to boost results. Cup your hands as if you’re scooping water, turn them fingers-down, and rhythmically clap on the congested area of your chest or have someone do it on your back. This vibration helps shake mucus loose from airway walls. Keep a steady rhythm, like tapping a drum, for one to two minutes per position.
Steam and Humidity
Your airways clear mucus most efficiently when the air you breathe is warm and moist. When humidity drops below 50%, the tiny hair-like structures lining your airways (which constantly sweep mucus upward) become less effective, and mucus dries out and thickens.
A hot shower is the quickest way to create this environment. Stand in the steam for 10 to 15 minutes, breathing slowly through your nose. If a shower isn’t practical, fill a bowl with hot water, drape a towel over your head, and inhale the steam. A humidifier in your room, especially while you sleep, keeps the air moist enough to prevent mucus from thickening overnight. Aim to keep indoor humidity above 50%.
For more stubborn congestion, nebulized saline (a fine mist of salt water at 3% to 7% concentration) draws water into the airways and can significantly improve mucus clearance. This requires a nebulizer device, which is worth discussing with your doctor if you deal with frequent or chronic congestion.
Over-the-Counter Expectorants
Guaifenesin (the active ingredient in Mucinex and Robitussin) is the most widely available expectorant. It works by reducing the stickiness and elasticity of mucus, making it easier to cough up. Lab studies show it significantly decreases both the springiness and the frictional adhesiveness of sputum, so mucus slides along the airways more freely.
That said, guaifenesin works best when paired with plenty of water. The medication changes mucus consistency, but hydration is what keeps that mucus thin enough to actually move. Taking guaifenesin without drinking enough fluid limits its effectiveness. Follow the dosing on the package and keep a water bottle nearby.
Honey for Nighttime Congestion
If chest phlegm is keeping you up at night, honey is surprisingly effective. In clinical trials comparing honey to standard cough suppressants, honey outperformed medication in reducing cough severity, the bothersome nature of coughing, and sleep quality for both children and their parents. The combined symptom improvement score for honey was roughly double that of the medication group.
A teaspoon or two of honey before bed, or stirred into warm tea, stimulates mucus and saliva secretion in the airways. This sounds counterintuitive, but the extra fluid it draws into the airway helps thin and loosen phlegm so it clears more easily. What Phlegm Color Does (and Doesn’t) Tell You
Many people assume green or yellow phlegm automatically means a bacterial infection that needs antibiotics. The reality is less clear-cut. Green and yellow tints come from enzymes released by your own white blood cells as they fight off any irritant, viral or bacterial.
