How to Get Rid of a Cold Fast: What Actually Works

You can’t cure a common cold, but you can realistically shorten it by one to two days and feel noticeably better in the meantime. A cold typically runs its course in 7 to 10 days, with symptoms peaking around days 2 through 4. The strategies below, used together and started early, give your immune system the best shot at clearing the virus faster.

Sleep Is the Single Biggest Factor

Your immune system does its heaviest repair work during sleep, and the data on this is striking. People who sleep fewer than 7 hours a night are nearly three times more likely to develop a cold after exposure compared to those sleeping 8 or more hours. Drop below 5 hours and the risk jumps to 4.5 times higher. Poor-quality sleep matters just as much: people with restless, fragmented sleep are 5.5 times more susceptible to infection than sound sleepers.

Once you’re already sick, the same principle applies in reverse. Deep, uninterrupted sleep lets your body produce the immune cells that fight off the virus. Aim for at least 8 to 9 hours while you’re symptomatic. If that means canceling plans or calling out of work on day one or two, it’s the single most effective thing you can do to speed recovery.

Start Zinc Lozenges Within 24 Hours

Zinc lozenges are one of the few supplements with solid evidence for shortening a cold, but timing and dosage matter. In a randomized controlled trial published in BMJ Open, participants who began dissolving zinc acetate lozenges (13 mg of elemental zinc each) six times a day within the first day of symptoms recovered faster than those taking a placebo. The effective daily dose lands around 75 to 80 mg of elemental zinc. Research shows that going above 80 to 92 mg per day doesn’t add any extra benefit.

The key detail most people miss: you need to start within the first 24 hours of feeling symptoms. Zinc appears to interfere with the virus’s ability to replicate in your throat and nasal passages, so waiting until day three largely defeats the purpose. Look for zinc acetate or zinc gluconate lozenges specifically, as other forms don’t dissolve the same way. Mild nausea and a metallic taste are common side effects.

Use a Saline Nasal Spray

A large trial of nearly 12,000 adults found that using a saline nasal spray reduced the average duration of illness from 8.2 days to about 6.4 days. That’s roughly two fewer days of symptoms, which is a bigger effect than most over-the-counter cold medications deliver. People in the saline spray group also missed fewer days of work.

Saline works by thinning mucus, flushing out viral particles, and keeping your nasal lining moist so it can function as a barrier. You can use a simple saline spray from any pharmacy or a neti pot for a more thorough rinse. Either way, use it several times a day, especially before bed when congestion tends to worsen.

Honey for Cough Relief

If a persistent cough is your worst symptom, honey performs as well as or better than the standard cough suppressant found in most OTC cold medicines. Multiple clinical trials have confirmed this, with one showing an 84% therapeutic success rate for honey, matching the drug comparison groups. Children and parents in the honey groups also reported better sleep.

A dose of about 10 grams (roughly two teaspoons) taken before bedtime is the most common approach used in the research. You can stir it into warm water or tea. One important exception: never give honey to children under 12 months old due to the risk of botulism.

Vitamin C: Dose Matters

Vitamin C taken after symptoms start can shorten a cold, but the effect depends on the dose. Early meta-analyses that found almost no benefit were later found to contain calculation errors. Corrected analyses show that vitamin C can reduce cold duration by close to a full day, with evidence suggesting a dose-dependent effect up to about 6 grams per day during the illness. Smaller doses of 250 mg likely won’t do much once you’re already sick. Spreading larger doses throughout the day is easier on your stomach.

Manage Pain and Fever Strategically

Over-the-counter pain relievers help you feel functional while your body fights the virus. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen both reduce fever and ease sore throat pain, but they work differently. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation throughout the body, which can make it more effective for a raw, swollen throat. Acetaminophen raises your pain threshold and targets the brain’s heat-regulating center to bring down fever, but it doesn’t address inflammation.

You can alternate the two if one alone isn’t enough, since they use completely different pathways. A low-grade fever (under about 101°F) is actually part of your immune response and helps slow viral replication, so you don’t necessarily need to treat it unless it’s making you miserable.

Indoor humidity plays a role too. Cold viruses spread more effectively and survive longer in dry air. Keeping your home’s relative humidity above 40 to 50% with a humidifier helps your nasal passages stay moist and functional as a first line of defense. What Won’t Help

Antibiotics are completely ineffective against colds. Colds are caused by viruses (more than 200 types, with rhinovirus being the most common), and antibiotics only kill bacteria. Taking them unnecessarily doesn’t just waste your time. It can cause side effects ranging from rashes to severe diarrhea from a dangerous intestinal infection, and it contributes to antibiotic resistance, making these drugs less effective when you actually need them.

Most multi-symptom cold medicines combine several drugs you may not need, often at doses too low to be very effective. You’re better off targeting your specific symptoms individually. If your main complaint is congestion, use saline and a targeted decongestant. If it’s cough, try honey. If it’s body aches and fever, pick the right pain reliever. This approach gives you more control and fewer unnecessary side effects.

A Realistic Recovery Timeline

Even doing everything right, expect to feel worst on days 2 through 4. This is when your immune system’s inflammatory response peaks, not when the virus is strongest. By days 5 and 6, most people notice a clear turn. Days 8 through 10 are the tail end, when a lingering cough or mild congestion may hang on but energy starts returning. If you’re not improving at all by day 10, that’s the point to see a healthcare provider, as a bacterial sinus infection or other complication may have developed on top of the original cold.
