How to Get Rid of a Headache From New Glasses

Headaches from new glasses are common and usually fade within a few days to two weeks as your brain adjusts to the changed optics. The discomfort happens because your visual processing centers are recalibrating to a new way of seeing, and there are practical steps you can take to speed that process along and reduce the pain in the meantime.

Why New Glasses Cause Headaches

Your new lenses refract light differently than your old pair or your uncorrected vision. Even though the images reaching your retina are sharper, they also come with subtle changes in magnification, curvature, and distortion that your brain isn’t prepared for. The visual processing area of your brain has to reorganize itself, forming new neural connections to interpret the altered signals. That rewiring process is real, physical work, and while it’s happening, the mismatch between what your eyes send and what your brain expects creates strain that often shows up as a headache.

Your eye muscles contribute too. If your prescription changed significantly, the muscles that control focus and alignment are working harder than usual to keep images sharp and fused into a single picture. That extra effort produces fatigue, tension around the forehead and temples, and sometimes a dull ache behind the eyes.

What Helps During the Adjustment Period

The single most effective thing you can do is wear the new glasses consistently. Switching back and forth between your old pair and the new one forces your brain to readapt every time, which drags out the process and can make headaches worse. Commit to the new lenses full-time.

Start wearing them in low-demand environments. Your home or a quiet office is easier on your visual system than driving in traffic or navigating a crowded store. Once your brain has a few calm hours to settle in, more complex visual situations become easier.

The 20-20-20 rule is especially useful during this transition: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This lets the focusing muscles in your eyes relax, which directly reduces the strain that feeds into headaches. If you spend a lot of time on screens, also try increasing your text size slightly and positioning your monitor just below eye level to cut down on the extra effort your eyes have to make.

Over-the-counter pain relief can take the edge off while you’re adjusting, and staying hydrated helps too since dehydration amplifies any headache. If the pain hits hard, removing your glasses for 15 to 20 minutes gives your visual system a brief reset without derailing the overall adaptation.

Progressive and Multifocal Lenses Take Longer

If your new glasses are progressives, expect a steeper learning curve. Progressive lenses pack three zones of vision (distance, intermediate, and near) into a single lens, and each zone requires you to position your head at just the right angle. The intermediate zone, designed for computer-distance work, is the one most people struggle with at first. Learning to tilt your chin slightly rather than moving just your eyes makes a noticeable difference in both clarity and comfort.

With progressives, the periphery of the lens naturally produces some distortion. Your brain will learn to ignore it, but early on it can trigger headaches and a vague sense of motion sickness. Moving your whole head to look at things, rather than glancing sideways through the edges of the lens, helps you avoid the warped zones while your brain catches up.

When the Problem Is the Glasses, Not You

Not every headache is just adaptation. Small errors in how the glasses were made or fitted can cause persistent discomfort that no amount of patience will fix. A few specific culprits are worth knowing about.

Pupillary height. This is where the optical center of the lens sits vertically in front of your eye. A discrepancy as small as 2 millimeters can force you into constant micro-adjustments with your chin to find the clear “sweet spot,” straining your neck and forehead muscles. If your headache sits right across your forehead, this measurement is a prime suspect.

Pupillary distance. This horizontal measurement determines whether the optical centers of both lenses line up with your pupils. When it’s off, your eyes are forced to turn slightly inward or outward to merge the two images into one. The result is a general pulling sensation, eye fatigue, and strain that builds throughout the day.

Vertex distance. This is the gap between the back of the lens and the front of your eye. Progressive lens optics are calculated for a specific distance, and if your frames sit too far from your face, it changes the effective power and distorts the peripheral optics. Your brain works overtime to compensate.

Frame wrap. Highly curved or wraparound frames can introduce prism-like effects in the lens periphery, creating pressure and strain on the sides of your head. This is particularly problematic with progressive lenses.

How to Tell It’s Time to Go Back

Most people feel noticeably better within a few days. Some take up to two weeks, particularly with a big prescription change or a first pair of progressives. But if you’ve been wearing the glasses consistently for two weeks and you’re still getting headaches, bring them back to where you got them. The lenses may have been made with an incorrect measurement, or the frame may need physical adjustment.

Certain symptoms suggest the prescription itself may be wrong rather than just needing time: extreme blurriness that doesn’t improve, poor vision when you close one eye, persistent dizziness or nausea, or double vision. These aren’t normal adjustment effects. They point to an error that needs professional correction, and continuing to push through will only prolong your discomfort.
