How to Get Rid of an Ear Infection at Home

Most ear infections clear up on their own within 3 to 5 days without specific treatment. The key to getting through one is managing pain effectively while your body (or your child’s body) fights off the infection, and knowing when antibiotics are actually necessary. What works depends on which type of ear infection you’re dealing with.

Middle Ear vs. Outer Ear Infections

There are two common types, and they feel different and require different approaches. A middle ear infection (otitis media) happens behind the eardrum, usually following a cold or upper respiratory infection. Fluid builds up and stretches the eardrum, causing that deep, throbbing pain. This is the type children get most often.

An outer ear infection (swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa) affects the ear canal itself. It typically starts after water gets trapped in the canal or after scratching or irritating the skin inside. The hallmark is pain when you tug on your outer ear or press on the small flap in front of it. You might also notice itching, drainage, or a feeling of fullness. Outer ear infections are almost exclusively bacterial and nearly always need prescription eardrops to resolve.

When Antibiotics Are Needed

For middle ear infections, antibiotics aren’t always the first step. The CDC outlines a “watchful waiting” approach: observing for 2 to 3 days to give the immune system time to clear the infection on its own. This avoids unnecessary antibiotic use and the side effects that come with it.

Children between 6 months and 23 months qualify for watchful waiting if only one ear is infected, symptoms have lasted less than 2 days, pain is mild, and temperature stays below 102.2°F. Children 2 and older can wait even if both ears are involved, as long as those same conditions are met. If symptoms haven’t improved or have worsened after 2 to 3 days, it’s time to call your healthcare provider about starting antibiotics.

Adults with middle ear infections that don’t resolve quickly are also candidates for antibiotics. When prescribed, the standard first-line option is amoxicillin. Adults typically take 500 to 875 mg every 12 hours. Children’s doses are based on body weight. The critical rule: finish the entire course even if you feel better after the first few doses. Stopping early can allow the infection to return or become resistant.

Treating Swimmer’s Ear

Outer ear infections are treated differently. Oral antibiotics don’t reach the ear canal effectively, so prescription eardrops are the standard treatment. These drops typically contain some combination of an acid solution (to restore the canal’s natural environment), an antibiotic, and a steroid to reduce swelling and inflammation. Your provider may also need to gently clean the ear canal first so the drops can reach the infected tissue.

While using drops, keep the ear dry. Avoid swimming, and use a cotton ball lightly coated with petroleum jelly when showering to keep water out.

Managing Pain at Home

Pain relief matters regardless of the infection type, and over-the-counter options work well. Acetaminophen can be given every 4 to 6 hours. Ibuprofen, which also reduces inflammation, can be given every 6 hours (for children 6 months and older). For adults, either medication at standard doses is effective. Some people find alternating between the two provides steadier relief.

A warm compress held against the ear can ease pain noticeably. The Cleveland Clinic suggests alternating between warm and cold compresses every 30 minutes. When using heat, make sure it’s warm, not hot enough to burn. Wrap cold compresses in a towel so the chill isn’t too intense against the skin. Sleeping with the affected ear facing up can also reduce pressure and discomfort.

Home Remedies Worth Knowing About

Hydrogen peroxide is sometimes used in the ear canal and is generally considered safe. It can help clear wax buildup that may be trapping moisture or contributing to discomfort. However, stop using it if it causes pain or irritation. One important detail: hydrogen peroxide can deactivate the active ingredients in antibiotic eardrops, so if you’re using both, leave at least 30 minutes between applications.

Olive oil drops are another gentle option for softening wax or soothing mild irritation. What you should avoid: sticking anything into the ear canal, including cotton swabs, which can push debris deeper and damage skin. Also skip eardrops of any kind if you suspect a ruptured eardrum (signs include sudden sharp pain followed by relief, drainage, or hearing loss).

What Recovery Looks Like

With a middle ear infection, pain from the fluid pressing on the eardrum usually starts improving within 2 to 3 days, whether or not you take antibiotics. Most infections resolve fully within 3 to 5 days. Fluid behind the eardrum can linger for weeks after the infection itself is gone, which may cause muffled hearing. This is normal and typically clears on its own, though it’s worth mentioning at a follow-up visit if it persists beyond a few weeks.

Swimmer’s ear usually improves within a few days of starting drops, though you should use the full course as prescribed. The ear canal may feel slightly off for a week or so after the infection clears.

Signs of a More Serious Problem

Ear infections rarely cause serious complications, but certain symptoms need prompt attention. Redness, swelling, or tenderness in the bone behind the ear (the mastoid area) can signal mastoiditis, an infection that has spread into the skull bone. This sometimes also causes the ear to push forward or outward. Fever alongside these symptoms strengthens the concern.

Other reasons to seek care quickly: pain that suddenly gets much worse, high fever that doesn’t respond to medication, symptoms that persist beyond 3 days without improvement, repeated ear infections (three or more in six months), or any significant hearing changes that don’t resolve as the infection clears.

Reducing Your Risk of Future Infections

For swimmer’s ear, prevention comes down to keeping ears dry. Tilt your head to drain water after swimming or bathing, and consider using a hair dryer on the lowest, coolest setting held about a foot from the ear. Over-the-counter drying drops (or a homemade solution of half rubbing alcohol, half white vinegar) used after swimming can help evaporate trapped water and restore the canal’s acidic environment.

For middle ear infections in children, a few strategies lower the odds. Breastfeeding for at least six months provides protective antibodies. Keeping children away from secondhand smoke matters, since smoke irritates the lining of the passages connecting the throat to the middle ear. Staying current on childhood vaccinations, particularly the pneumococcal vaccine, reduces the bacteria most commonly responsible for ear infections. And if your child takes a bottle, feeding in an upright rather than lying-down position helps prevent milk from flowing into the middle ear space.
