How to Get Rid of Blisters on Toes: Treat and Prevent

Most blisters on toes heal on their own within three to seven days without any special treatment. Your body reabsorbs the fluid naturally while new skin forms underneath, and the raised layer eventually dries and peels off. The best thing you can do is protect the blister from further friction, keep it clean, and resist the urge to pop it. That said, some toe blisters need a bit more active care, and knowing the difference matters.

Leave It Intact When You Can

The fluid inside a blister is your body’s built-in cushion, protecting the raw skin beneath while it regenerates. Keeping that roof intact is the single most effective thing you can do to speed healing and prevent infection. Cover the blister with a nonstick bandage or gauze pad to shield it from your shoe, and change the bandage daily or whenever it gets wet.

If the blister is on the bottom of your toe or in a spot that takes pressure when you walk, a donut-shaped moleskin pad works well. Cut a hole in the center of the moleskin slightly larger than the blister, then stick it around the blister so the raised skin sits inside the opening. This redirects pressure to the surrounding pad instead of the blister itself.

When and How to Drain a Blister Safely

Sometimes a toe blister is so large or so painfully pressurized that leaving it alone isn’t realistic. If it’s making it difficult to walk or wear shoes, careful draining can relieve the pressure while preserving the protective skin on top.

Start by washing your hands and the blister with soap and water. Sterilize a small needle with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic wipe. Puncture the edge of the blister in one or two spots, just enough for the fluid to drain out. Gently press the fluid toward the puncture holes, but leave the overlying skin in place. Then apply petroleum jelly or an antibiotic ointment and cover with a nonstick bandage.

What you want to avoid is tearing the roof off entirely. That exposes raw tissue, increases pain, and raises the risk of infection significantly. The Mayo Clinic recommends applying an antiseptic to the blister after draining and covering it with a clean, nonstick dressing. If you have diabetes or poor circulation, be especially cautious since your infection risk is higher and healing tends to be slower.

Signs of Infection to Watch For

An uncomplicated blister is filled with clear fluid and may be tender but not hot to the touch. An infected blister looks different. The fluid turns green or yellow (pus), the surrounding skin becomes red and warm, and the pain intensifies rather than gradually improving. On darker skin tones, the redness around the blister can be harder to spot, so pay attention to increasing warmth, swelling, or pain that worsens after the first couple of days. Red streaks radiating outward from the blister are a particularly urgent sign that infection is spreading.

Speeding Up Recovery

Once you’ve either left the blister intact or drained it properly, healing follows a predictable path. During the first two to three days, the fluid gradually reabsorbs. By days three through five, new skin is forming underneath. By about a week, the old skin dries out and peels away on its own.

You can support this process in a few practical ways. Keep the area clean and dry, changing your bandage at least once a day. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly at each bandage change to keep the healing skin moist, which prevents cracking. Wear shoes that don’t press directly on the blister. If the blister is between your toes, a small piece of gauze or a toe separator can prevent the adjacent toes from rubbing against it.

Avoid picking at peeling skin. It can look tempting to pull it off, but removing it before the new layer is ready exposes tender tissue and restarts the clock on healing.

Why Toe Blisters Form in the First Place

Blisters on toes are almost always caused by friction, moisture, or a combination of both. Shoes that are too tight pinch the toes together, creating friction between them. Shoes that are too loose let your foot slide around, generating friction against the shoe itself. Add moisture from sweat, and the skin softens and tears more easily at the deeper layers, allowing fluid to pool and form a blister.

Certain toes are more vulnerable. The pinky toe catches friction from the outer edge of your shoe. The tops of curled or hammertoes rub against the toe box. The spaces between toes trap moisture and heat, making skin-on-skin blisters common there, especially during long walks or runs.

Preventing Toe Blisters From Coming Back

If you’re getting toe blisters repeatedly, the fix is almost always about reducing friction and managing moisture before they have a chance to do damage.

Choose the Right Socks

Cotton socks absorb sweat and hold it against your skin, which is exactly what you don’t want. Synthetic blends or merino wool wick moisture away from the surface of your foot and reduce friction at the same time. If you’re prone to blisters between your toes, toe socks (with individual compartments for each toe) eliminate skin-on-skin contact entirely.

Use a Lubricant or Anti-Friction Stick

Anti-chafe balms and sticks create a slippery barrier on the skin that reduces the grip between your toes and your socks or shoes. Apply them directly to blister-prone areas before putting on your socks. These products are designed to resist sweat and last through extended activity, making them especially useful for runners, hikers, or anyone on their feet for hours.

Get the Right Shoe Fit

Your shoes should have about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. The toe box should be wide enough that your toes aren’t squeezed together. If you’re breaking in new shoes, do it gradually over several short outings rather than wearing them for a full day right away. Lacing your shoes snugly through the midfoot keeps your foot from sliding forward and banging your toes against the front of the shoe.

Keep Your Feet Dry

If your feet sweat heavily, changing socks midday can make a real difference. Foot powder applied before your socks helps absorb excess moisture. Letting your shoes dry completely between wears, rather than putting on the same damp pair every day, also reduces the moisture load on your skin.

For people who regularly get blisters in the same spot, preemptively covering that area with a thin adhesive bandage or a strip of surgical tape before activity creates an extra barrier between the skin and the friction source. This simple trick is widely used by distance runners and can prevent a blister from ever forming.
