Caffeine jitters typically peak within 30 to 60 minutes of consumption and fade as your body clears the caffeine from your system. The bad news: caffeine has a half-life of about five to six hours in most adults, so you can’t flush it out instantly. The good news: several strategies can blunt the symptoms while you wait.
Why Caffeine Makes You Jittery
Caffeine blocks a brain chemical that promotes sleepiness, which lets your stimulating neurotransmitters run unchecked. Your body responds by releasing adrenaline, raising your heart rate, tightening your muscles, and putting you into a low-grade fight-or-flight state. That’s what the jitters actually are: your nervous system revving higher than the situation calls for. The intensity depends on how much you consumed, how fast you drank it, and whether you had food in your stomach at the time.
Eat Something, Especially With Fiber or Protein
If you drank coffee on an empty stomach, eating now can help. Food in your gut, particularly fiber, slows the rate at which caffeine reaches peak levels in your blood. A meal won’t remove caffeine that’s already circulating, but if you’re still within the first hour of drinking it, food can soften the remaining spike. Something substantial works best: toast with peanut butter, oatmeal, a banana, or yogurt with fruit. These also help stabilize blood sugar, which caffeine can disrupt.
Move Your Body
Light exercise is one of the fastest ways to take the edge off. A brisk walk, gentle stretching, or a quick yoga flow helps burn through excess adrenaline, which is a major driver of that shaky, restless feeling. You’re not speeding up caffeine metabolism in any meaningful way, but you’re giving your body a productive outlet for the energy it’s generating. Avoid intense workouts if your heart rate already feels elevated. The goal is to move enough to release tension without pushing your cardiovascular system harder.
Use Slow Breathing to Calm Your Heart Rate
Your vagus nerve acts like a brake pedal for your heart. Stimulating it can lower a racing pulse and ease that chest-tightening anxiety caffeine sometimes produces. The simplest technique: inhale deeply, then exhale slowly against resistance. You can do this by breathing out through pursed lips as if blowing through a thin straw, or by taking a deep breath and bearing down gently (like you’re straining) with your nose and mouth closed for 10 to 30 seconds. This is called the Valsalva maneuver, and it activates the nerve pathway that tells your heart to slow down.
Box breathing works well too. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four. Repeat for two to three minutes. The key is making the exhale at least as long as the inhale, which shifts your nervous system away from that fight-or-flight state caffeine triggered.
Drink Water, but Know What It Does
Staying hydrated won’t speed up caffeine metabolism. Your liver breaks down caffeine at its own pace regardless of how much water you drink. But hydration still helps for a different reason: caffeine increases urine production, especially in higher doses or if you don’t consume it regularly. That mild diuretic effect can leave you slightly dehydrated, which amplifies headaches, dizziness, and that generally “off” feeling. Drinking water addresses those secondary symptoms even though it doesn’t clear the caffeine itself.
Try L-Theanine
L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves, and it’s one of the most studied compounds for smoothing out caffeine’s rough edges. It promotes calming brain activity without making you drowsy, essentially counterbalancing the overstimulation caffeine creates. Doses of 200 to 400 milligrams per day have been shown to produce meaningful anti-anxiety and stress-reducing effects, and it’s widely available as an inexpensive supplement. If you’re prone to jitters, taking 200 mg of L-theanine alongside your coffee can prevent the problem before it starts. Green tea naturally contains both caffeine and L-theanine, which is one reason it tends to feel smoother than coffee despite still containing a stimulant.
Magnesium Can Help With the Anxiety Component
Caffeine pushes your brain toward overstimulation by promoting the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Magnesium works in the opposite direction. It blunts the release of glutamate (the chemical that excites your nerves) and supports the release of GABA (the chemical that calms them down). If caffeine jitters show up for you primarily as anxiety, racing thoughts, or a feeling of being “wired,” magnesium may help restore some balance. Many people are mildly deficient in magnesium to begin with, which can make anxiety symptoms worse. Foods rich in magnesium include dark leafy greens, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and dark chocolate.
How Long Caffeine Actually Lasts
For most healthy adults, caffeine’s half-life sits around five to six hours. That means if you drank 200 mg at 8 a.m., roughly 100 mg is still active in your bloodstream at 2 p.m. The jittery peak usually passes much sooner than that, within one to three hours, but a low-level buzz can linger well into the afternoon.
Several factors make caffeine stick around longer. Pregnancy dramatically slows caffeine clearance, with processing speed dropping by about 65% in the third trimester. Certain medications, including some antibiotics and antacids, also slow the liver enzyme responsible for breaking caffeine down. Genetics play a role too: some people carry a gene variant that reduces the activity of that enzyme, making them naturally slow metabolizers. If you’ve always felt like caffeine hits you harder than it hits your friends, this is likely why.
Preventing Jitters Next Time
The FDA considers up to 400 mg of caffeine per day safe for most adults, roughly two to three 12-ounce cups of brewed coffee. But your personal threshold may be well below that. If you regularly get jitters, the fix is usually one or more of these adjustments:
- Eat before or with your coffee. Fiber and protein slow caffeine absorption and reduce the intensity of its peak.
- Spread your intake out. Two smaller servings an hour apart hit more gently than one large dose.

Your sensitivity also shifts over time. Poor sleep, high stress, and hormonal changes (including menstrual cycle fluctuations) can all make the same amount of caffeine feel more intense than it did last week.
