How to Get Rid of Cellulite on Your Stomach: What Works

Cellulite on the stomach is harder to treat than on the thighs or buttocks, but a combination of approaches can visibly reduce it. No single treatment eliminates cellulite permanently, because the dimpling comes from how your skin, fat, and connective tissue are structurally arranged, not just from carrying extra weight. That said, several options ranging from daily habits to professional procedures can smooth things out meaningfully.

Why Cellulite Forms on the Stomach

Cellulite isn’t caused by having too much fat. MRI and biopsy studies show no correlation between cellulite severity and the thickness of your fat layer, and no structural difference in the fat itself between cellulite skin and smooth skin. The real issue is the connective tissue bands (called septae) that run between your skin and the muscle beneath it. In women, these bands run straight up and down, perpendicular to the skin’s surface, creating compartments where fat cells sit. When those compartments push upward while the bands pull downward, you get the classic hills-and-valleys texture.

A key biopsy study found that the bands themselves become thickened and fibrous over time. Researchers concluded that fat bulging into the dermis is actually a secondary event. The primary problem is progressive tension on the connective tissue bands, which creates the depressions and dimples. This is why losing weight alone often doesn’t fix cellulite, and why thin women get it too. It also explains why about 80 to 90 percent of women develop some degree of cellulite after puberty: female connective tissue is simply arranged in a way that makes dimpling likely.

Building Muscle Underneath

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that replacing fat with muscle can make cellulite less noticeable because a more muscular foundation creates a smoother, firmer surface under the skin. For the stomach specifically, this means building the core muscles that sit directly beneath the abdominal fat layer.

Planks, dead bugs, ab rollouts, and other exercises that challenge the entire abdominal wall (not just crunches) help thicken the muscle beneath the skin. Pair core work with full-body strength training and enough protein to support muscle growth. This won’t dissolve the fibrous bands causing dimpling, but it does change the terrain those bands are pulling against. A firmer base means less visible puckering. Worth noting: when you actively flex your abs, dimples can temporarily look more pronounced because the contraction increases tension on the connective tissue bands. What matters is the resting appearance over time as muscle fills in.

Collagen Supplements

Oral collagen peptides have the strongest nutritional evidence for cellulite reduction. In a six-month randomized trial of 105 women with moderate cellulite, those taking 2.5 grams of collagen peptides daily saw an 8 percent reduction in skin waviness compared to placebo and a significant increase in dermal density, meaning the skin itself became thicker and more resilient.

Women with a BMI under 25 responded even better: they saw improvements as early as three months, and by six months skin waviness dropped 11.1 percent compared to placebo. If you’re at a healthy weight and dealing with stomach cellulite, collagen peptides are one of the more accessible interventions to try. Look for hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides) in powder or capsule form, at a dose of at least 2.5 grams daily, and give it a full three to six months before judging results.

Topical Creams and Massage

No cream eliminates cellulite, but certain ingredients produce temporary visual improvements, and the act of applying them matters too. Caffeine stimulates fat cells to release stored fat and has clinically confirmed slimming activity when applied topically. Retinol improves skin thickness over time, making the surface layer more resistant to the pulling effect of those underlying bands. Horse chestnut extract (escin) strengthens capillaries and limits fluid buildup in tissue, which can reduce puffiness that makes dimpling look worse.

Massage itself improves blood flow and fluid drainage in the affected area, which is why even basic self-massage with a firm cream can temporarily smooth things out. Dry brushing works on a similar principle. These effects fade within hours to days, but consistent daily application of a caffeine or retinol-based body cream, combined with firm upward massage strokes on the stomach, can keep the area looking its best while you pursue longer-lasting strategies.

Radiofrequency Treatments

Radiofrequency (RF) devices heat the deeper layers of skin to stimulate collagen production and tighten tissue. In a clinical study using combined RF and targeted pressure energy on multiple body parts, 95 percent of patients improved from moderate to mild cellulite after just four sessions spread over two to four weeks. Independent evaluators confirmed visible improvement in 90 percent of subjects, and 82 percent of patients reported better skin tightness. The abdomen specifically showed a significant decrease in circumference that held at six months after treatment.

RF treatments are non-invasive (no needles, no downtime) and typically cost a few hundred dollars per session, though you’ll usually need a series of four to six. Results build gradually over weeks as new collagen forms, with the best outcomes visible around the two- to three-month mark. Maintenance sessions every few months help sustain results.

Acoustic Wave Therapy

Acoustic wave therapy (sometimes called shockwave therapy) sends pressure waves through the skin to break up fibrous bands and stimulate circulation. While most studies have focused on the thighs and buttocks, the underlying mechanism applies to abdominal tissue as well. In one trial, the percentage of subjects with severe cellulite dropped from 60 percent to 38 percent over 12 weeks, and subcutaneous fat thickness also decreased slightly. Over 90 percent of subjects said they’d do the treatment again.

Sessions are painless to mildly uncomfortable, require no recovery time, and are typically scheduled once or twice a week for six to eight weeks. It’s a solid option if you want something between topical creams and more aggressive procedures.

Laser-Based Procedures

For more stubborn stomach cellulite, minimally invasive laser treatments offer the longest-lasting results. A 1440-nm laser delivered through a small cannula under the skin works in three steps: it releases the tight fibrous bands, reduces the fat layer’s thickness, and heats the dermis to stimulate collagen and skin tightening. In a multicenter study, a single treatment maintained effectiveness for at least one year.

This is a step up in terms of commitment. The procedure requires local anesthesia, takes about an hour, and involves mild soreness and bruising for a week or two afterward. Costs typically run $3,000 to $5,000 or more per session depending on the treatment area and provider, but the appeal is that one session can produce durable results rather than requiring ongoing maintenance.

Why Liposuction Can Backfire

If you’re considering liposuction to address stomach cellulite, proceed with caution. Liposuction removes fat but does nothing to the fibrous bands causing dimpling, and it can actually make the surface more uneven. In a comparative study, patients who had previous liposuction showed significantly deeper skin depressions than those who hadn’t. Moderate to severe asymmetry appeared in 64 percent of post-liposuction patients, compared to just 4 percent of those who never had the procedure. Certain types of visible skin irregularities were found exclusively in the liposuction group.

This doesn’t mean liposuction is always harmful for appearance, but if your primary concern is texture rather than volume, liposuction is likely to make things worse, not better.

Putting It All Together

The most effective approach combines several strategies at once. Build abdominal muscle through consistent core and strength training. Take 2.5 grams of collagen peptides daily and give it at least three months. Use a caffeine-based body cream with firm massage on your stomach each morning. If those baseline habits aren’t enough after a few months, RF or acoustic wave therapy can push results further without significant cost or recovery time. Laser treatments are worth considering if you want a one-time procedure with lasting results and are comfortable with the price tag.

Realistic expectations matter. You can meaningfully reduce stomach cellulite, shift it from moderate to mild, and make it far less noticeable. Complete elimination is unlikely for most people, because the structural architecture of female connective tissue is the root cause. But the combination of a stronger muscle base, thicker skin, and loosened fibrous bands adds up to a noticeably smoother surface.
