How to Get Rid of Excessive Gas: Diet & Remedies

Most excessive gas comes from two sources: swallowed air and bacterial fermentation of undigested food in your large intestine. That means the fastest path to relief targets one or both of those mechanisms. The average person passes gas 13 to 21 times a day, so the goal isn’t to eliminate it entirely but to bring it back to a comfortable, manageable level.

Why Your Body Produces So Much Gas

Five gases make up over 99% of what you pass as flatus: nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane. They come from three places. First, you swallow several milliliters of air with every bite of food or gulp of saliva. Second, chemical reactions in your upper intestine produce carbon dioxide when stomach acid meets digestive secretions. Third, and most importantly, bacteria in your colon ferment carbohydrates that escaped digestion in your small intestine. Those colonic bacteria are the sole source of all hydrogen and methane in your gut.

This last mechanism explains why certain foods cause so much trouble. Beans, lentils, cruciferous vegetables, and whole grains contain complex carbohydrates that your small intestine can’t fully break down. When they reach your colon, bacteria feast on them and produce gas as a byproduct. More than 20% of the population experiences abdominal pain from this process.

Reduce Swallowed Air First

Air swallowing is the easiest source of gas to control because it’s driven almost entirely by habits. Common culprits include eating too fast, talking while eating, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, drinking through straws, consuming carbonated beverages, and smoking. Each of these forces extra air into your stomach, which then moves through your digestive tract.

The fixes are straightforward: chew slowly and swallow one bite before taking the next. Sip from a glass instead of a straw. Save conversation for after the meal rather than during it. Switch from sparkling water or soda to still beverages. If you chew gum or suck on mints throughout the day, cutting back can make a noticeable difference within days.

Adjust What You Eat

If bacterial fermentation is driving your gas, the most effective long-term strategy is changing what reaches your colon. A low-FODMAP diet, which temporarily eliminates certain fermentable carbohydrates, has strong clinical support. A systematic review of 24 studies involving roughly 1,700 patients with irritable bowel syndrome found that 50% to 75% of people on a low-FODMAP diet experienced significant improvement in bloating, abdominal pain, and overall quality of life. One controlled trial showed 57% improvement with the diet compared to 20% in the control group.

The low-FODMAP approach works in three phases: you eliminate high-FODMAP foods (onions, garlic, wheat, certain fruits, beans, dairy) for two to six weeks, then reintroduce them one category at a time to identify your personal triggers, then settle into a long-term diet that avoids only the foods that bother you. It’s not meant to be permanent in its strictest form. Working with a dietitian helps you avoid unnecessary restrictions.

Even without a formal elimination diet, you can experiment. Common gas-producing foods include beans, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, onions, whole wheat, and dairy (if you’re lactose intolerant). Reducing portion sizes of these foods or cooking them thoroughly can help, since heat breaks down some of the complex carbohydrates before they reach your gut.

Enzyme Supplements for Specific Foods

If you don’t want to give up beans, lentils, or certain vegetables, enzyme supplements can intercept the problem. Products containing alpha-galactosidase (sold as Beano) break down the non-absorbable fiber in these foods before it reaches your colon, preventing bacteria from fermenting it into gas. You take it right before your first bite. It’s effective for gas-related flatulence, cramping, and bloating caused specifically by legumes, root vegetables, and some dairy products.

For lactose intolerance specifically, lactase supplements work on the same principle: they supply the enzyme your body lacks, so dairy sugars get digested in the small intestine instead of fermenting in the colon.

Over-the-Counter Gas Relief

Simethicone (the active ingredient in Gas-X and similar products) works physically rather than chemically. It reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in your gut, causing small bubbles to merge into larger ones that are easier to pass. It won’t prevent gas from forming, but it can relieve the uncomfortable pressure and bloating you feel after a meal.

It’s worth noting that clinical evidence for simethicone is mixed. Multiple small trials have failed to consistently demonstrate significant benefit over placebo. It works well for some people and not at all for others, so it’s reasonable to try but not the most reliable long-term solution.

Peppermint Oil and Probiotics

Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules relax the smooth muscle in your intestinal wall, which can ease the cramping and pressure that trapped gas causes. In one clinical trial, 79% of patients taking peppermint oil reported less flatulence, compared to just 22% in the control group. The enteric coating matters: without it, peppermint oil can relax the valve between your esophagus and stomach, causing heartburn.

Probiotics offer a different angle. A meta-analysis of 23 trials involving over 2,500 people with IBS found that probiotics significantly improved bloating and flatulence compared to placebo. The effect was modest (roughly one in seven patients benefited), and the quality of studies was low, so results vary. No single strain has emerged as clearly superior. If you try probiotics, give them at least four weeks before judging whether they’re helping.

Activated Charcoal: Limited Internal Benefit

Activated charcoal tablets are widely marketed for gas relief, but more recent and better-designed trials have failed to show that swallowing charcoal meaningfully reduces gas volume or symptoms. Early, less rigorous studies looked promising, but the evidence doesn’t hold up.

Where activated charcoal does work is externally. Charcoal-lined briefs absorb almost 100% of the sulfur gases responsible for odor. Charcoal pads worn inside underwear absorb 55% to 77%. If smell rather than volume is your main concern, these products can help in social situations while you work on the underlying cause.

When Gas Signals Something Else

Persistent, excessive gas can be a symptom of digestive conditions including celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or gastroparesis. Gas alone isn’t cause for alarm, but certain accompanying symptoms point to something that needs investigation: blood in your stool, a sustained change in how often you have bowel movements or what they look like, ongoing nausea or vomiting, or gas that’s severe enough to interfere with daily life. Prolonged abdominal pain or chest pain warrants immediate evaluation.

If you’ve tried dietary changes and over-the-counter options for several weeks without improvement, that pattern itself is worth bringing to a doctor. Testing for food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth, or celiac disease can uncover a treatable root cause that no amount of simethicone will fix.
