Most foot blisters heal on their own within three to seven days without any special treatment. The fluid inside is part of your body’s natural defense: it cushions the damaged skin underneath while new skin grows. Your main job is to protect the blister from further friction, keep it clean, and decide whether to drain it or leave it alone.
Should You Pop a Foot Blister?
The general rule is to leave a blister intact whenever possible. That roof of skin is a sterile, natural bandage, and the fluid underneath gets slowly reabsorbed as new skin forms. If the blister is small and not causing much pain, simply cover it with a bandage and let it heal.
Draining makes sense when the blister is large, painful, or in a spot where it’s going to rupture on its own from walking. A controlled drain is safer than an accidental tear that rips the skin away. The key principle: drain the fluid, but never peel off the overlying skin. That flap protects the raw tissue beneath.
If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or numbness in your feet, don’t drain blisters yourself. Nerve damage can mask pain, meaning you may not notice an infection developing. Check your feet daily for blisters, sores, and redness, and let your doctor handle any you find.
How to Safely Drain a Blister
If draining is the right call, here’s the process recommended by the Mayo Clinic:
- Clean everything first. Wash your hands and the blister thoroughly with soap and water, then swab the blister with an antiseptic.
- Sterilize a needle. Wipe a sharp, thin needle with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic wipe.
- Puncture near the edge. Prick the blister in several spots along its perimeter, not the center. This lets fluid drain without disturbing the skin roof.
- Press gently. Let the fluid flow out on its own or apply light pressure. Do not tear or cut away the overlying skin.
- Apply a barrier and cover. Dab on petroleum jelly, then cover with a non-stick bandage or gauze pad.
You may notice the blister refills with fluid over the next day or two. That’s normal. Repeat the drainage process the same way if needed.
Petroleum Jelly vs. Antibiotic Ointment
You might assume antibiotic ointment is the better choice, but clinical evidence says otherwise. Studies comparing antibiotic ointments (containing ingredients like neomycin and bacitracin) to plain petroleum jelly found no significant difference in infection rates. Antibiotic ointments can actually cause contact dermatitis, leaving the skin red, itchy, and irritated, which slows healing rather than helping it.
Plain petroleum jelly keeps the wound moist, which is what matters. It creates a barrier that prevents the bandage from sticking to raw skin and helps new tissue form efficiently. Save the antibiotic ointment for situations where infection has already started.
What Healing Looks Like
Whether you drain the blister or leave it alone, expect the same general timeline. New skin grows underneath over three to seven days. The fluid gradually reabsorbs, the top layer of skin dries out, and eventually it peels off on its own. Resist the urge to pick at it.
During healing, change your bandage daily or whenever it gets wet or dirty. Each time, gently clean the area and reapply petroleum jelly before covering it again. If you can, reduce pressure on the area. Wear shoes that don’t rub the blister, or use a donut-shaped moleskin pad that surrounds the blister without pressing on it.
Recognizing an Infection
Most blisters heal without complications, but watch for these warning signs:
- Pus that’s green or yellow. Clear or slightly blood-tinged fluid is normal. Cloudy, colored pus is not.
- Heat around the blister. The skin feels noticeably warm to the touch compared to surrounding areas.
- Spreading redness. On lighter skin, this shows as a red halo expanding beyond the blister’s edge. On darker skin tones, the color change can be subtler, so pay more attention to warmth, swelling, and increasing pain.
- Fever or red streaks. These suggest the infection may be spreading beyond the local area and need prompt medical attention.
Preventing Blisters From Coming Back
Friction blisters happen when skin repeatedly slides against a surface, creating shearing forces in the deeper layers. Anything that reduces that friction or absorbs it before it reaches your skin will help.
Socks Matter More Than You Think
Double-layer sock systems work by creating a sock-on-sock interface that slides before your skin does. The friction happens between the two sock layers instead of between sock and foot. In a military study of 221 recruits, wearing two sock layers with powder cut blister rates from 59% down to 22%. Another study of 189 recruits found that a single padded polyester sock reduced blisters from 51% to just 16%, outperforming even the double-sock approach in that trial.
The material matters as much as the layering. Cotton holds moisture against your skin, increasing friction. Synthetic or wool-blend socks wick sweat away, keeping skin drier and more resistant to shearing. If you go with two pairs, use a thin moisture-wicking liner sock underneath and a thicker cushioned sock on top.
Reduce Friction at the Skin
Lubricants and powders work at the boundary between your skin and sock. Petroleum jelly, body glide sticks, or even foot powder can all lower the friction coefficient at that interface. Apply them to blister-prone areas (heels, toes, the ball of the foot) before activity. Lubricants tend to wear off over long distances, so reapply if you’re hiking or running for hours.
Fix the Shoe Problem
Shoes that are too tight create constant pressure. Shoes that are too loose allow your foot to slide around, generating more friction with every step. Your feet swell slightly during the day and significantly during exercise, so fit shoes in the afternoon or evening when your feet are at their largest. Leave about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. Break in new shoes gradually rather than wearing them for a full day or long walk right away.
Moleskin or blister-specific tape applied to known hot spots before activity acts as a sacrificial layer. The tape absorbs the shearing force so your skin doesn’t have to. Pre-cut donut pads work well around areas that have already blistered once and are prone to recurring problems.
