How to Get Rid of Hiccups Fast: Techniques That Work

Most hiccups stop within minutes using simple techniques that either raise carbon dioxide levels in your blood or stimulate the nerve running from your brain to your abdomen. The fastest method with clinical backing is a specific layered breathing technique that stopped hiccups in 84% of patients in a case series. Below are the methods worth trying, why they work, and when hiccups signal something more serious.

Why Hiccups Happen

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of your diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle beneath your lungs that controls breathing. When it spasms, your vocal cords snap shut almost instantly, creating the “hic” sound. This whole reflex loop involves two key nerves: the phrenic nerve (which controls the diaphragm) and the vagus nerve (which runs from your brainstem down through your neck, chest, and abdomen).   • Gargle ice water: Gargling stimulates nerves at the back of your throat more effectively than just drinking water. Keep gargling for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Sip ice-cold water slowly: Cold water hitting the back of your throat and esophagus jolts the vagus nerve. Small, deliberate sips work better than gulping.
  • Suck on an ice cube: Hold it in your mouth for a couple of minutes, then swallow the cold meltwater.
  • Tickle the roof of your mouth: Gently rub the roof of your mouth with a cotton swab or the soft side of a toothbrush. This stimulates a branch of the vagus nerve that runs through the palate.

What Triggers Hiccups in the First Place
