The fastest way to bring down a high blood sugar is a combination of hydration, physical activity, and cutting carbs in your next meal. If you use insulin, a correction dose is the most direct tool. How quickly your levels drop depends on how high they are, what caused the spike, and whether you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
Drink Water First
Water helps your kidneys filter excess sugar out through urine. The more hydrated you are, the more urine your body produces, which flushes glucose from your bloodstream. Start drinking water as soon as you notice a high reading and keep sipping steadily. Avoid juice, soda, or sweetened drinks, which will push your levels higher.
There’s no magic number of ounces that guarantees a drop, but steady intake over the next hour or two gives your kidneys the fluid they need to do their job. If you’re already dehydrated (common when blood sugar is elevated, since high glucose pulls water from your cells), you may need more than you think.
Move Your Body, With One Important Check
Exercise pulls glucose out of your blood and into your muscles, where it’s burned for energy. A brisk walk, a bike ride, or even 15 to 20 minutes of bodyweight exercises can make a noticeable dent in a blood sugar spike.
There’s a critical safety threshold, though. If your blood sugar is above 270 mg/dL, check for ketones before exercising. Your body produces ketones when it breaks down fat for energy because it doesn’t have enough insulin to use glucose. Exercising with high ketones can trigger a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If ketones are present, skip the workout and focus on hydration and insulin instead.
Use a Correction Dose of Insulin
For people who take insulin, a correction dose is the fastest and most reliable way to lower a high. Rapid-acting insulin starts working in about 15 minutes and hits its peak effect around one hour after injection. Inhaled rapid-acting insulin works even faster, with an onset of 10 to 15 minutes and a peak at 30 minutes.
If you have Type 1 diabetes, insulin is your only option for bringing glucose down. Your pancreas doesn’t produce it, so no amount of water or walking will fully resolve a significant high without a dose. If you have Type 2 diabetes and take insulin, the same correction approach applies. Follow whatever sliding scale or correction factor your care team has set for you, and resist the urge to “stack” doses by taking more insulin before the first dose has had time to work. That’s a common cause of dangerous lows a few hours later.
Cut Carbs at Your Next Meal
While you’re waiting for your blood sugar to come down, don’t add fuel to the fire. Skip starchy or sugary foods and focus on protein, non-starchy vegetables, and healthy fats for your next meal or snack. Fiber-rich foods like vegetables and whole grains help keep blood sugar more stable because they digest slowly, preventing another sharp spike on top of the one you’re already managing.

A moderate high in someone with Type 2 diabetes might take one to three hours to resolve with hydration and a walk. A reading above 300 mg/dL is a different situation entirely.
Check your levels every 30 to 60 minutes while you’re actively trying to bring a high down. This prevents you from over-correcting and crashing into a low, which can feel just as miserable as the high itself.
When a High Becomes an Emergency
Most blood sugar spikes are uncomfortable but manageable at home. Some are not. Get to an emergency room or call 911 if:
- Your blood sugar stays at 300 mg/dL or above and isn’t responding to your usual correction
- Your breath smells fruity, a hallmark sign of ketoacidosis
- You’re vomiting and can’t keep food or fluids down

Bringing down a high is reactive. Preventing it saves you the discomfort and the health risks that come with repeated glucose spikes. A few patterns cause most highs: eating more carbs than your insulin or medication can cover, missing or mistiming a dose, illness or infection (which raises blood sugar even without dietary changes), stress, and dehydration.
Consistent meal timing, staying active throughout the week (aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise), and checking your levels before and after meals will reveal your personal patterns.
