Getting rid of leaky gut comes down to removing the things that damage your intestinal lining and giving your body the conditions it needs to repair itself. The gut lining replaces its cells every few days, so when you eliminate triggers and support the healing process, improvements can begin within weeks, though full recovery often takes several months.
“Leaky gut” isn’t a formal medical diagnosis, but the underlying problem, increased intestinal permeability, is well documented. Your intestinal lining is held together by protein structures called tight junctions that control what passes through into your bloodstream. In most of these conditions, scientists currently view permeability as a feature or symptom of the disease rather than a proven independent cause. However, there is an active debate about whether a leaky gut can precede and contribute to the development of autoimmune conditions, rather than simply resulting from them.

There is currently no standard, validated test to directly measure intestinal permeability in a clinical setting.
