Foot numbness usually comes from a nerve that’s being compressed or damaged, and the fix depends entirely on what’s causing it. Sometimes it’s as simple as changing your shoes or adjusting how you sit. Other times it signals a nutritional deficiency, uncontrolled blood sugar, or a nerve condition that needs medical treatment. The good news: many causes are reversible, especially when caught early.

Why Your Feet Go Numb

Numbness happens when a nerve can’t send signals properly. The most straightforward cause is pressure. Sitting cross-legged, wearing tight shoes, or standing in one position for hours can temporarily compress nerves in your legs or feet. When Foot Numbness Is an Emergency

Most foot numbness is not dangerous, but there’s one scenario that requires immediate medical attention: cauda equina syndrome. This occurs when the bundle of nerves at the base of your spine becomes severely compressed, usually by a herniated disc or spinal injury.

The red flags to watch for are numbness that spreads to your groin, inner thighs, or buttocks, combined with any of these: sudden difficulty urinating or inability to sense when your bladder is full, loss of bowel control, or rapidly worsening leg weakness that affects your ability to walk. If you experience this combination, go to an emergency room. Treatment within 48 hours of symptom onset significantly improves outcomes for sensory, motor, and bladder function. Delays beyond that window risk permanent damage.
