You won’t reverse aging, but you can significantly reduce how much it hurts.
Why Your Body Hurts More With Age
Understanding what’s actually happening inside your body makes it easier to target the right fixes. Several processes are working against you simultaneously.
Muscle loss (sarcopenia) begins around age 30 and accelerates over time. Both the number and size of your muscle fibers gradually shrink, and the fast-twitch fibers that help with quick, powerful movements decline faster than the slow ones. Less muscle means more stress on your joints, especially the knees and hips, which can trigger or worsen arthritis and increase your risk of falls.
Your cartilage thins. The cushioning material inside joints loses resilience as its internal structure changes, so joint surfaces don’t glide as smoothly. For many people, this leads to osteoarthritis. At the same time, the connective tissue in your ligaments and tendons becomes stiffer and more brittle, limiting your range of motion and making everyday movements feel tight or painful.
Fascia, the thin web of tissue that wraps around your muscles and organs, also plays a role. When fascia becomes dehydrated or inflamed, it can send strong pain signals even if the underlying muscle is fine. This is why some generalized achiness doesn’t seem connected to any specific injury.
Strength Training Is the Single Best Tool
If you do one thing on this list, make it resistance training. It’s now considered a first-line treatment for osteoarthritis because weakness in the muscles surrounding a joint, particularly the quadriceps around the knee and the hip stabilizers, directly contributes to both pain and loss of function. When those muscles are weak, your joints absorb forces they weren’t designed to handle alone.
Strengthening the muscles around a painful joint improves alignment, reduces abnormal loading during movement, and builds the support structure that cartilage can no longer fully provide. You don’t need heavy weights or a gym membership. Bodyweight exercises like squats, wall push-ups, and seated leg extensions are effective starting points. Resistance bands are another low-cost option that lets you scale difficulty gradually.
Sedentary behavior, on the other hand, is actively harmful. Sitting for long periods has been linked to increased pain perception in older adults, likely because inactivity amplifies pain-signaling pathways in the nervous system. Eat to Lower Inflammation
Chronic low-grade inflammation is a major driver of age-related pain, and what you eat has a measurable effect on it. Diets high in red meat, refined grains, and sugary drinks are consistently linked to higher inflammation. You don’t need to overhaul your diet overnight. There’s no magic number that works for everyone, but a practical approach is to drink water consistently throughout the day rather than trying to catch up in large amounts. Keeping a water bottle visible and sipping regularly is more effective than forcing yourself to drink a set amount. Fruits and vegetables with high water content (cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, celery) contribute to your total intake as well.
Fix Your Sleep to Break the Pain Cycle

Be Cautious With Pain Medication

Heat and cold therapy are underrated alternatives: heat relaxes stiff muscles and increases blood flow before activity, while ice reduces swelling after a flare-up. Neither has side effects.
Skip Glucosamine and Chondroitin
These supplements are heavily marketed for joint pain, but the most current evidence doesn’t support spending money on them. A 2024 meta-analysis published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage found that adding glucosamine, either alone or combined with chondroitin, to an exercise program produced no significant improvement in knee pain or physical function compared to exercise alone. The exercise itself was doing the work. Your budget is better spent on good shoes, a set of resistance bands, or quality food.
Build a Daily Routine That Stacks These Habits
None of these strategies works as well in isolation as they do together. A practical daily framework might look like this: start mornings with 10 minutes of gentle stretching or yoga to loosen stiff tissue. Include 20 to 30 minutes of walking or strength exercises at some point during the day. Eat meals built around vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Drink water throughout the day. Wind down in the evening with a consistent pre-sleep routine.
