Most razor bumps clear up on their own within two to three weeks if you stop shaving the affected area and treat the inflammation. The bumps form when freshly cut hairs curl back into the skin or get trapped beneath the surface, triggering an inflammatory response. Getting rid of them faster requires a combination of calming the irritation you have now and changing your shaving routine so they don’t keep coming back.
What’s Actually Happening Under Your Skin
When you shave, the blade cuts hair at a sharp angle. That angled tip can curve back and pierce the skin as it grows, or retract below the surface and get trapped there. Your body treats that re-entered hair like a foreign object, sending an inflammatory response that produces the red, raised, sometimes painful bumps you see. People with naturally curly or coarse hair are more prone to this because their hair is already inclined to curl back toward the skin.
This is technically called pseudofolliculitis barbae, and it’s distinct from a simple razor burn (which is surface-level irritation that fades in hours to days). Razor bumps involve actual hair entrapment and can persist for weeks, worsen with each shave, and leave dark marks on the skin if they become chronic.
How to Treat Bumps You Already Have
The single most effective thing you can do right now is stop shaving the irritated area. Every new shave re-cuts the trapped hairs and restarts the inflammatory cycle. If you absolutely need to manage hair growth, use an electric trimmer that leaves hair at least 1 mm above the skin surface rather than a razor.
For immediate relief, a low-strength hydrocortisone cream (0.5% or 1%) reduces swelling and redness. Both strengths are available over the counter. Apply a thin layer to the bumps, but don’t use it for more than a few days at a time. Prolonged use weakens the skin and impairs its barrier function, which can make the problem worse long-term.
Chemical exfoliants help free trapped hairs by dissolving the dead skin cells that seal them in. Salicylic acid is the most accessible option: it penetrates into pores and loosens the plugs trapping hairs beneath the surface. Glycolic acid (around 7% concentration) works similarly by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface. You can find both in over-the-counter serums and toners. Apply once daily to the affected area, and give it a few days to see results.
Aloe vera gel can ease discomfort while you heal. It won’t speed up the process, but its cooling properties help with the itch and sting. Skip tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar. Dermatologists at Cleveland Clinic caution that tea tree oil may contain additional ingredients with unwanted effects, and apple cider vinegar and witch hazel tend to sting irritated skin without meaningful benefit.
Shaving Technique That Prevents Recurrence
Once your bumps have healed, how you shave matters more than what products you buy. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends these specific steps:
- Soften the hair first. Shave at the end of your shower, or hold a warm, damp washcloth against the area for a few minutes. Softened hair swells slightly and is less likely to curl back into the skin after being cut.
- Shave with the grain. Figure out which direction your hair grows and follow it. Shaving against the grain gives a closer cut, but that’s exactly the problem: it slices hair below the skin surface, where it’s more likely to become trapped. If your hair grows in multiple directions, you can train it to grow in one direction by gently brushing the area with a soft toothbrush daily.

- Don’t go over the same spot twice. Repeated passes compromise the skin barrier, increase friction, and make irritation far more likely.
Why Your Razor Choice Matters
Multi-blade razors are designed to lift the hair and cut it below the skin surface. That’s great for smoothness but terrible for razor bumps, because a hair cut below the surface has a longer journey to exit the skin and more opportunity to curl inward. A single-blade razor is gentler. It makes fewer passes over the skin at once and doesn’t cut as deep, which significantly reduces the chance of ingrown hairs.
Whatever razor you use, replace disposable blades after five to seven shaves. A dull blade tugs at hair rather than cutting cleanly, creating more friction and trauma. If you use an electric razor, clean it on the same schedule. Store your razor somewhere dry between uses so the blade doesn’t degrade from moisture.

A normal razor bump is mildly tender and fades over days to weeks. An infected bump behaves differently. Watch for skin that becomes increasingly swollen, warm, and painful, especially if the area spreads or develops a hard texture. Pus-filled bumps around hair follicles that become crusty sores, rather than resolving, can signal a staph infection (folliculitis).
