That persistent feeling of mucus sliding down the back of your throat, called post-nasal drip, is one of the most common and irritating upper respiratory complaints. The good news: most cases respond well to a combination of home remedies and over-the-counter treatments. The key is matching your approach to whatever is triggering the excess drainage in the first place.
Why Mucus Builds Up in Your Throat
Your nose and throat glands produce one to two quarts of mucus every day. Normally you swallow it without noticing because it mixes with saliva and slides down harmlessly. The problem starts when your body either makes too much mucus or the mucus becomes too thick to drain quietly. That’s when you feel it pooling at the back of your throat, triggering the urge to clear your throat or cough.
Allergies are the single most common cause. Colds, flu, and sinus infections are close behind. But several less obvious triggers can keep the drip going for weeks or months: a deviated septum that blocks normal drainage, certain medications (including birth control pills and blood pressure drugs), and acid reflux that creeps up into the throat. Identifying the underlying cause matters because treatments that work beautifully for allergies won’t do much for reflux-related drainage.
Nasal Saline Rinses
Flushing your nasal passages with salt water is the simplest, cheapest, and most broadly effective remedy. A rinse physically washes out excess mucus, allergens, and irritants, giving your sinuses a fresh start. You can use a squeeze bottle, neti pot, or bulb syringe. Premixed saline packets are widely available at pharmacies, or you can dissolve a quarter teaspoon of non-iodized salt in eight ounces of water.
Water safety is critical here. The CDC recommends using only distilled or sterile water from a sealed container. If you use tap water, bring it to a rolling boil for one minute (three minutes above 6,500 feet elevation), then let it cool completely before rinsing. Tap water straight from the faucet can contain organisms that are harmless to swallow but dangerous when pushed directly into your sinuses. Rinse the device itself with safe water after every use and let it air dry.
Most people notice relief within minutes of a rinse. Doing it once or twice a day, especially before bed, can significantly cut down on nighttime throat drainage.
Over-the-Counter Medications That Help
Which medication works best depends on what’s causing the drip.
- Antihistamines are the go-to for allergy-driven drainage. Newer, non-drowsy options like loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and fexofenadine (Allegra) work well for most people. Older antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) dry out secretions more aggressively but cause significant drowsiness.
- Mucus thinners like guaifenesin (Mucinex) don’t stop mucus production, but they make thick, sticky mucus thinner and easier to clear. This is especially useful during colds or sinus infections when mucus turns dense and hard to move.
- Oral decongestants like pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) shrink swollen nasal tissue so mucus can drain more freely. They’re effective for congestion-heavy colds but can raise blood pressure and interfere with sleep.
- Nasal decongestant sprays containing oxymetazoline (Afrin) provide fast relief by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages. However, using them for more than two or three days can cause rebound congestion that’s worse than the original problem.
Nasal Steroid Sprays
For allergy-related or chronic post-nasal drip, over-the-counter nasal steroid sprays (like fluticasone or triamcinolone) are often the most effective long-term option. They reduce inflammation in the nasal lining, which slows mucus production at the source. Unlike decongestant sprays, steroid sprays are safe for daily use over weeks or months.
The catch is patience. You may notice some improvement in runny nose symptoms within three hours, but the full effect on congestion and overall drainage typically takes seven hours or longer. Many people give up on steroid sprays after a day or two because they don’t feel an immediate difference. Consistent daily use for a week or more is usually needed before the full benefit kicks in.
Sleep Position and Nighttime Relief
Post-nasal drip almost always feels worse at night. When you lie flat, mucus pools at the back of your throat instead of draining downward, triggering coughing and that choking, throat-clearing cycle that wrecks your sleep.
Elevating your head helps gravity work in your favor. Stack an extra pillow or two, or slide a foam wedge under the head of your mattress. This keeps mucus moving downward rather than settling in your throat. The elevation also reduces acid reflux, which can be a hidden contributor to nighttime drainage. Running a humidifier in your bedroom adds moisture to the air, which keeps mucus from thickening overnight. A saline rinse right before bed clears out whatever has accumulated during the day.
When Acid Reflux Is the Real Problem
If your sinus drainage won’t quit despite treating allergies and colds, acid reflux may be the actual culprit. A condition called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) sends stomach acid up into the throat, where it irritates the lining and triggers excess mucus production. The tricky part: most people with LPR don’t experience classic heartburn. Instead, they notice a persistent lump-in-the-throat sensation, chronic throat clearing, hoarseness, a lingering cough, and what feels exactly like post-nasal drip.
Many people with LPR spend months or years treating what they assume are allergies or an endless cold. If antihistamines and nasal rinses aren’t helping, and you notice your symptoms worsen after meals or when lying down, reflux is worth investigating. Avoiding eating within two to three hours of bedtime, reducing acidic and spicy foods, and elevating your head while sleeping are first-line strategies. Over-the-counter acid reducers can also help confirm whether reflux is playing a role.
Foods and Hydration
Staying well hydrated thins mucus, making it easier to swallow and less likely to feel like it’s stuck in your throat. Water is best, but warm liquids like tea or broth can be especially soothing because the warmth helps loosen congestion.
Some people find that dairy products make their mucus feel thicker or more noticeable. This appears to be more of an individual sensitivity than a universal biological effect, but if you notice worsening symptoms after milk or cheese, cutting back for a few days is an easy experiment. Alcohol and caffeine can both contribute to dehydration, which thickens mucus. Spicy foods, on the other hand, temporarily thin secretions and may provide short-term relief.
Bacterial vs. Viral Sinus Infections
A cold-related post-nasal drip typically improves within seven to ten days. If your drainage lasts longer than that, or suddenly gets worse after initially improving, a bacterial sinus infection may have developed on top of the original virus.
Signs that point toward a bacterial infection include a fever above 102°F, pain concentrated on one side of the face, tooth pain in the upper jaw, and a foul smell that you notice when you breathe. Interestingly, the color of your mucus alone isn’t a reliable way to tell viral from bacterial infections, despite the common belief that green or yellow mucus automatically means bacteria. A bacterial sinus infection is one of the few situations where antibiotics genuinely help resolve post-nasal drip. Most cases of drainage from colds, allergies, or irritants resolve without them.
Structural Causes
If post-nasal drip is a near-constant part of your life regardless of season or illness, a structural issue like a deviated septum could be the reason. The septum is the wall of cartilage between your nostrils. When it’s significantly off-center, it makes one nasal passage smaller than the other and prevents mucus from draining properly. Nasal polyps, which are soft, noncancerous growths in the sinus lining, can create a similar blockage. Both conditions are common, and both can be addressed with medical or surgical treatment when symptoms are persistent enough to affect your quality of life.
