Smelly feet happen when bacteria on your skin break down sweat, releasing the sulfur compounds and fatty acids responsible for that unmistakable odor. Your feet have roughly 250,000 sweat glands, more per square inch than anywhere else on your body, so they produce a lot of moisture. The good news: a combination of better hygiene habits, the right materials, and targeted treatments can eliminate foot odor for most people.
Why Feet Smell Worse Than Other Body Parts
Feet spend most of the day sealed inside shoes and socks, creating a warm, dark, moist environment where bacteria thrive. The bacteria feed on dead skin cells and sweat, and their waste products are what actually smell. This is why someone who sweats heavily but wears open sandals may never have odor issues, while someone with average sweat levels can have terrible-smelling feet after a day in tight shoes.
Dead skin buildup makes the problem worse. Hard, calloused skin absorbs moisture and turns soft and soggy inside shoes, creating an ideal breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria. Fungal infections like athlete’s foot add their own smell on top of the bacterial odor, and the two conditions often coexist.
Daily Washing That Actually Works

To reduce the bacterial population on your feet, wash them with antibacterial soap and pay attention to the spaces between your toes, where moisture collects and bacteria concentrate. Black tea soaks are another popular option. The tannic acid in tea acts as a natural astringent that helps close pores and reduce sweating. Brew two tea bags in a pint of water, let it cool to a comfortable temperature, and soak for 20 minutes.
Choosing the Right Socks and Shoes
Cotton socks absorb sweat but hold onto it, keeping your feet damp all day. Merino wool is a better choice because it manages moisture by absorbing sweat and releasing it back into the air, and it has natural odor-resistant properties that synthetic fibers and cotton lack. Moisture-wicking synthetic blends designed for athletic use also outperform cotton, though they don’t resist odor as well as merino wool.
If your feet sweat heavily, carry a spare pair of socks and change them midday. This single habit can make a dramatic difference. Choose socks without seams where possible, since bunched-up fabric traps additional moisture.
Shoes matter just as much. Leather and canvas allow more airflow than synthetic materials. Rotate between at least two pairs of shoes so each pair gets a full 24 hours to dry out between wears. Shoes that never fully dry become permanent reservoirs of bacteria and fungi, recontaminating your feet every time you put them on.
Treating Your Shoes
Cleaning your feet while ignoring your shoes is like brushing your teeth and then eating from a dirty plate. Bacteria and fungi live in shoe linings and insoles, and they recolonize your feet within hours.
UV shoe sanitizers use ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms inside shoes. Studies show a single treatment destroys up to 99.9% of the bacteria and fungi in shoes, including the species responsible for foot odor and athlete’s foot. You insert the device into each shoe for a timed cycle, typically 15 to 45 minutes depending on the model.
If you don’t want to invest in a UV sanitizer, sprinkle baking soda inside your shoes overnight to absorb moisture and neutralize odor. Shake them out before wearing. Removable insoles should be taken out after each wear and allowed to air dry separately. Replace insoles every few months if you sweat heavily.
Antiperspirants and Topical Treatments
Regular underarm antiperspirant works on feet too. Apply it to clean, dry soles before bed and let it absorb overnight. The aluminum compounds temporarily block sweat ducts, reducing the moisture that bacteria need. For mild cases, a standard-strength antiperspirant is often enough.
For persistent sweating, clinical-strength formulas containing aluminum chloride are more effective. Concentrations of 10% to 15% are common in over-the-counter products, while prescription formulas for the palms and soles can go up to 30% or even 40%. Apply it at night and leave it on for six to eight hours for it to work properly. Use it nightly until you notice improvement, then reduce to once or twice a week for maintenance.
Antiseptic washes containing benzoyl peroxide can also reduce the bacterial load on your feet. These are available over the counter in most pharmacies. If antiseptic washes aren’t enough, a doctor may prescribe topical antibiotics, though these are reserved for stubborn cases because overuse can lead to bacterial resistance.
When the Problem Might Be Something Else
If your feet still smell despite consistent hygiene, the cause may not be ordinary sweat bacteria. Athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that causes itching, flaking, and sometimes cracking between the toes, produces its own distinct odor and needs antifungal treatment to resolve. Over-the-counter antifungal creams or sprays clear most cases within two to four weeks.
Pitted keratolysis is a bacterial skin infection that causes small, crater-like pits on the soles and a particularly strong odor. It’s common in people whose feet stay damp for long periods and typically requires prescription antibacterial treatment.
In rare cases, persistent body odor that doesn’t respond to hygiene measures can signal a metabolic condition. Trimethylaminuria, sometimes called fish odor syndrome, is a disorder where the body can’t break down a specific compound, causing sweat, breath, and urine to develop a strong smell. The condition can be inherited or triggered by liver disease, gut microbiome imbalances, or certain supplements like choline or carnitine. Many people with this condition assume their hygiene is the problem and never seek a diagnosis. If you’ve tried everything and the smell persists or has a distinctly fishy quality, it’s worth bringing up with your doctor.
A Practical Daily Routine
Combining several of these strategies works far better than relying on any single one. A realistic daily approach looks like this:
- Morning: Wash feet with antibacterial soap, dry completely (especially between toes), apply antiperspirant to soles, put on clean merino wool or moisture-wicking socks.
- Midday: Change socks if your feet feel damp.
- Evening: Wash feet again, do a foot soak two to three times per week, exfoliate with a pumice stone once or twice a week. Remove insoles from shoes and let them air out overnight.
