Smelly gas comes down to one thing: sulfur. Bacteria in your large intestine break down certain foods and release hydrogen sulfide, the same compound responsible for the smell of rotten eggs. The good news is that a few targeted changes to what and how you eat can make a noticeable difference, often within days.
Passing gas is normal, somewhere between 14 and 23 times a day for most adults. The volume isn’t usually the problem. It’s the odor that sends people searching for solutions. Here’s what actually works.
Why Some Gas Smells Worse Than Others
Most intestinal gas is odorless. It’s made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and sometimes methane, none of which have a smell. The stench comes specifically from sulfur-containing gases, with hydrogen sulfide being the main offender.
Your colon is home to trillions of bacteria that ferment whatever your small intestine didn’t fully absorb. When those bacteria encounter sulfur-rich compounds, particularly from protein and certain vegetables, they produce hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct. The more sulfur-containing material that reaches your colon, the worse your gas will smell. Simple sugars and simple carbohydrates can also increase gas production because bacteria ferment them quickly, though that tends to increase volume more than odor.
Cut Back on High-Sulfur Foods
The most direct way to reduce smelly gas is to limit the foods that fuel hydrogen sulfide production. The biggest sulfur sources include:
- Red meat, poultry, and eggs
- Garlic and onions
- Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower
You don’t need to eliminate all of these permanently. Try reducing your intake for a week or two and see if the smell improves. Then reintroduce foods one at a time to identify your personal triggers. Many people find that one or two specific items are responsible for most of the problem.
Cruciferous vegetables are nutritious, so cutting them out entirely isn’t ideal. Cooking them thoroughly breaks down some of the sulfur compounds before they reach your gut, which can help. Steaming or roasting tends to work better than eating them raw.
Watch Your Protein Intake
Dietary protein, especially from meat, is one of the biggest drivers of sulfur gas production. A controlled feeding study found that fecal sulfide concentrations increased dramatically with meat intake, rising from 0.22 mmol/kg on a meat-free diet to 3.38 mmol/kg at the highest intake level. That’s roughly a fifteenfold increase.
The mechanism is straightforward. Sulfur-containing amino acids in protein are broken down by colonic bacteria, and the more undigested protein that reaches your large intestine, the more hydrogen sulfide gets produced. If you’re eating large portions of meat at every meal or consuming high amounts of protein powder, scaling back may reduce odor significantly. Spreading protein across meals rather than loading it into one or two sittings also gives your small intestine a better chance of absorbing it before bacteria get to work.
Bismuth Products: The Most Effective OTC Option
If dietary changes alone aren’t enough, bismuth subsalicylate (the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol) has the strongest evidence for reducing gas odor. In clinical testing, taking it four times daily for three to seven days produced a greater than 95% reduction in hydrogen sulfide released from stool samples. The bismuth binds directly to hydrogen sulfide, forming an insoluble compound that can’t become airborne.
This isn’t meant as a long-term daily solution, but it can be useful for short stretches when you need relief, like during travel or social events. Follow the dosing instructions on the label and be aware that bismuth turns your tongue and stool black temporarily, which is harmless but can be surprising.
What Doesn’t Work: Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is widely marketed for gas and bloating, but a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found it produced no significant reduction in the release of any sulfur-containing gases. The reason: charcoal’s binding sites become saturated as it passes through the gut, leaving it unable to absorb the gases that actually cause odor. At commonly used doses, it doesn’t meaningfully change gas smell, volume, or abdominal symptoms.
Digestive Enzymes for Gas Volume
If your smelly gas also comes with bloating and high volume, an enzyme supplement containing alpha-galactosidase (sold as Beano) can help with one piece of the puzzle. It breaks down fermentable carbohydrates found in beans, bran, and fruit before they reach the colon, reducing the amount of material available for bacteria to ferment. A randomized controlled trial showed significant symptom improvement in patients who took it before meals containing these foods.
Alpha-galactosidase primarily reduces gas volume rather than sulfur odor specifically, since it targets carbohydrates rather than protein. But less total gas production can still mean less smell overall. Take it with the first bite of a meal containing beans or high-fiber foods for the best effect.
Slow Down When You Eat
Eating quickly causes you to swallow excess air, which increases gas output. Harvard Health recommends a simple approach: set a timer for 20 minutes at the start of your meal and pace yourself to make it last. Chew each bite about 30 times and put your fork down between bites. Carbonated drinks, chewing gum, and drinking through straws also push extra air into your digestive tract.
Swallowed air mostly contributes to odorless gas and belching rather than sulfur smell directly. But reducing total gas volume means fewer opportunities for foul-smelling compounds to hitch a ride, and it gives your digestive enzymes more time to break food down in the small intestine before it reaches the bacteria in your colon.
When Smelly Gas Signals Something Else
Persistent, unusually foul gas that doesn’t respond to dietary changes can sometimes point to a malabsorption problem, where your body isn’t properly breaking down and absorbing nutrients. The undigested food then feeds bacteria in the colon, producing excess sulfur gases.
Malabsorption often shows up with other symptoms beyond just gas. Fatty stools that are greasy, runny, light-colored, and particularly foul-smelling are a hallmark sign. If you’re also experiencing unexplained weight loss, chronic diarrhea, or fatigue, conditions like celiac disease, pancreatic insufficiency, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth could be involved. A stool test can measure fat content and assess pancreatic function, while blood tests can reveal specific nutrient deficiencies and markers for conditions like celiac disease.
For most people, though, smelly gas is a dietary issue, not a medical one. Starting with a two-week reduction in high-sulfur foods, especially red meat and cruciferous vegetables, gives you the clearest signal of whether food is the driver. From there, you can fine-tune your diet based on what you reintroduce and what your gut can handle.
