Most staph skin infections clear up within a few weeks with the right treatment, which ranges from topical antibiotics for mild cases to drainage procedures for abscesses to intravenous drugs for serious or resistant infections. What works depends on the type and severity of your infection, and whether the bacteria are resistant to common antibiotics.
Mild Skin Infections: Topical Treatment
For surface-level staph infections like impetigo (crusty, oozing patches) or small infected cuts, a prescription antibiotic ointment applied twice daily for five days is the standard first step. These topical treatments work well when the infection hasn’t spread deeper into the skin. You apply the ointment directly to the affected area after gently washing it with soap and water, then cover it with a clean bandage.
If the infection is slightly deeper, like an ulcer that extends through the outer skin layers, your doctor will likely prescribe a seven-day course of oral antibiotics instead. The choice of antibiotic depends on whether your infection is caused by ordinary staph or the drug-resistant variety known as MRSA.
How MRSA Changes the Treatment Plan
Standard staph (called MSSA) responds to common antibiotics in the penicillin family. MRSA carries a gene that makes it resistant to those drugs, along with most cephalosporins. This means doctors need to reach for different medications entirely.
For mild to moderate MRSA skin infections, oral options include doxycycline, clindamycin, or a sulfa-based antibiotic. For severe MRSA infections, treatment typically requires IV antibiotics in a hospital setting. Your doctor won’t always know which type you have at first. If your infection isn’t improving after a couple of days on standard antibiotics, MRSA is one of the main reasons, and your doctor may switch your medication or send a wound culture to the lab to identify the exact strain.
When an Abscess Needs Drainage
Staph bacteria frequently cause abscesses: painful, swollen lumps filled with pus beneath the skin. Most abscesses need to be drained by a healthcare provider, not just treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics alone often can’t penetrate the walled-off pocket of infection effectively.
For small, superficial abscesses, your doctor may first try warm compresses and oral antibiotics, then reassess in 24 to 48 hours. If the abscess hasn’t improved or is clearly fluctuant (feels like it has liquid inside), drainage becomes necessary. The procedure itself is straightforward: the area is numbed, a small incision is made, and the pus is drained. It’s typically done in a clinic or urgent care office and takes under 30 minutes.
Some abscesses require an operating room instead. These include abscesses on the face (between the brow and upper lip), near major blood vessels or nerves (the armpit, groin, or back of the knee), on the hand beyond the fingertip, or deep abscesses that are hard to fully explore. After drainage, you may or may not need antibiotics. Doctors generally prescribe them if you have significant surrounding redness and swelling, multiple or recurring abscesses, a weakened immune system, or signs of body-wide infection like fever.
What Recovery Looks Like
Most staph skin infections heal within a few weeks. You should see noticeable improvement within two to three days of starting the right antibiotic. The redness shrinks, the pain decreases, and any swelling starts to go down. If that improvement isn’t happening, contact your doctor, because it may mean the antibiotic isn’t matching the bacteria.
After an abscess drainage, the wound is usually left partially open so it can continue to drain. You’ll need to change the dressing daily, and your doctor may pack the wound with gauze that gets gradually removed over follow-up visits. Full healing of a drained abscess typically takes two to four weeks depending on size and location. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid touching the wound without washing your hands first.
Medical-Grade Honey for Wound Care
Medical-grade honey, particularly Manuka honey, has genuine antimicrobial properties backed by clinical research. A systematic review examining 16 studies found that medical-grade honeys were highly effective against a wide range of bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains. The drug-resistant status of the bacteria made no difference in how well honey worked against them.
The practical applications are topical: honey-laced wound dressings and ointments used on surface wounds and burns to both promote healing and fight infection. This is not a replacement for antibiotics when you have a spreading or deep infection, but it can be a useful addition to wound care, especially for chronic wounds that aren’t responding well to standard treatment. Look for products specifically labeled as medical-grade, as regular grocery store honey is not sterile and should never be applied to open wounds.
Stopping Staph From Coming Back
Recurring staph infections are common because the bacteria can live harmlessly in your nose and on your skin, then cause a new infection whenever there’s a break in the skin. If you’ve had two or more infections, your doctor may recommend a decolonization protocol designed to reduce the staph population on your body.
The standard approach has two parts. First, you apply an antibiotic ointment (mupirocin) inside each nostril twice a day for five days. The nose is the primary reservoir where staph colonizes, so clearing it out is critical. Second, you wash your entire body daily with a chlorhexidine-based wash (at least 2% concentration) during the same period. An iodine-based nasal antiseptic is an alternative if mupirocin isn’t an option. This protocol is the same one the CDC recommends for hospital settings to prevent staph bloodstream infections, adapted for outpatient use.
Beyond decolonization, practical daily habits make a significant difference. Don’t share towels, razors, or athletic equipment. Wash bed linens and towels in hot water weekly. Keep cuts and scrapes covered with clean bandages until healed. Disinfecting Your Home
Staph survives on surfaces, so cleaning matters during and after an active infection. For hard, nonporous surfaces like countertops, tile, and stainless steel, use an EPA-registered disinfectant or mix household bleach at a ratio of roughly 1 tablespoon per quart of water (a 1:100 dilution). For wood surfaces, you need a much stronger solution: about 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. In both cases, leave the bleach solution on the surface for at least 10 minutes before wiping it off. Rinse well with plain water afterward.
Focus on high-touch areas: bathroom counters, door handles, light switches, and any surfaces that come in contact with the infected skin. Launder any clothing, towels, or bedding that touched the infection site separately, using hot water and a full dryer cycle. The heat from the dryer is as important as the washing itself.
Signs That Need Emergency Care
Most staph infections stay localized to the skin, but they can occasionally spread to the bloodstream and become life-threatening. A fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher alongside a skin infection warrants a prompt call to your doctor. Go to the emergency room if you develop rapid breathing or difficulty catching your breath, new confusion or disorientation, skin that feels cold and clammy, severe pain out of proportion to the wound, or a spreading rash that looks mottled or discolored in a widespread pattern. These are signs of sepsis, and treatment within the first hours dramatically affects outcomes.
Less urgent but still worth a same-day medical visit: skin that’s increasingly red, swollen, warm, or painful to touch, or any wound developing pus-filled blisters. A spreading area of redness around an infection, especially if it’s moving visibly over hours, means the infection is advancing faster than your immune system (or current antibiotics) can contain it.
