If you’re dealing with dark buildup from smoking or tobacco use, you’re likely seeing a combination of two things: calcified tartar and tobacco staining embedded in that tartar. Both need professional attention, but understanding the difference helps you know what to tackle yourself and what to leave to your dentist.

Tartar vs. Tobacco Stains

Plaque is the soft, sticky film that forms on your teeth when saliva mixes with bacteria and leftover food particles. When plaque isn’t removed, minerals from your saliva harden it into tartar. Water flossers won’t remove tartar either. They’re effective at flushing away soft plaque before it hardens, but once mineralization has occurred, water pressure alone can’t break it loose. Hydrogen peroxide doesn’t dissolve tartar. Baking soda paste won’t budge it. These tools and ingredients work on plaque and surface stains only.

What Happens During Professional Removal

A standard dental cleaning removes tartar buildup above and just below the gumline. Your hygienist uses either hand scalers or ultrasonic instruments. Ultrasonic scalers have a tip that vibrates at extremely high speed, breaking apart hard deposits with minimal force. A continuous stream of water cools the tip and flushes debris, but it also creates a process called cavitation, where tiny bubbles form and collapse rapidly, disrupting bacterial buildup even in areas the instrument can’t directly reach, like narrow grooves and root concavities.

If tartar has spread significantly below the gumline, your dentist may recommend a deeper procedure called scaling and root planing. This involves numbing your gums with local anesthesia, removing deposits from both above and below the gumline, and smoothing the root surfaces so gums can reattach more easily. Your provider may also prescribe antibiotics if there’s active infection.

For heavy smokers or tobacco users, tartar and staining tend to build up faster and more stubbornly than average. Your dentist will likely recommend cleanings more frequently than the standard twice-a-year schedule, sometimes every three to four months, depending on how quickly deposits return.

What You Can Do at Home for Surface Stains

While tartar itself requires professional removal, you can address lighter surface stains between visits. Whitening toothpastes with mild abrasives can gradually reduce tobacco discoloration on enamel. Look for toothpastes that carry an ADA Seal of Acceptance for stain removal.

Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that can help lift surface stains when used as part of your brushing routine. Some people mix it with hydrogen peroxide, but getting the concentration right at home is difficult. The FDA-approved concentration for safe tooth whitening (about 3.6% hydrogen peroxide) is hard to measure accurately in a DIY mixture, and if the peroxide contacts exposed roots or irritates your gums, it can cause pain and tissue damage. Custom-fitted whitening trays from your dentist are a safer option if you want peroxide-based whitening.

Activated charcoal products are heavily marketed for stain removal, but clinical evidence doesn’t support the hype. A randomized controlled trial found that activated charcoal products produced “minor and unsatisfactory” whitening compared to professional-grade peroxide treatments. Worse, charcoal’s abrasiveness can damage enamel by increasing surface roughness and reducing microhardness. The study’s authors concluded that activated charcoal products should be discouraged.

How to Prevent New Tartar From Forming

Prevention is where your daily habits make the biggest difference. Since plaque can start hardening within hours, consistent removal is the key to keeping tartar from coming back after a professional cleaning.

  • Brush twice daily for two minutes. Use a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush, angling the bristles toward the gumline where plaque collects most.
  • Floss once a day. Brushing alone misses the tight spaces between teeth where plaque loves to hide and harden.
  • Use a tartar-control toothpaste. These contain compounds like sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, or zinc citrate that interfere with the mineralization process, preventing soft plaque from crystallizing into tartar.
  • Use a water flosser as a supplement. It won’t remove existing tartar, but it’s effective at flushing plaque from hard-to-reach areas before it hardens.
  • Reduce or quit tobacco. Smoking accelerates plaque and tartar buildup and stains any deposits that do form, making the cycle harder to break.

What Dark or Black Tartar Means

Tartar that has turned dark brown or black is a sign it’s been there a while. The color comes from a combination of factors: tobacco staining, absorption of pigments from food and drinks, and in some cases, bleeding beneath the gumline that deposits iron-containing compounds into the tartar. Black tartar along or below the gumline often indicates gum disease is already underway, since bacteria trapped in those porous deposits actively irritate and break down gum tissue.
