How to Get Rid of Tartar at Home Safely

Once tartar has formed on your teeth, you cannot remove it at home. Tartar (also called calculus) is hardened mineral deposits made primarily of calcium phosphate, and it bonds directly to your enamel in layers that no toothbrush, mouthwash, or home remedy can break apart. Only a dental professional with specialized scaling instruments can safely remove it. That said, there’s a lot you can do at home to stop new tartar from forming, slow its buildup, and keep the tartar you already have from causing bigger problems.

Why Tartar Can’t Be Brushed Away

Tartar starts as plaque, the soft, sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth throughout the day. Plaque is easy to remove with regular brushing and flossing. But when plaque sits on your teeth long enough, it absorbs minerals from your saliva and food, and begins hardening into calculus in as little as 48 hours. Once that mineralization happens, the deposit is essentially rock fused to your tooth surface. A toothbrush has no chance against it, and neither does floss.

Why DIY Scraping Tools Are Risky

You can buy dental scalers online, and social media is full of videos showing people scraping tartar off their own teeth. This is genuinely dangerous. These are sharp medical instruments that require training to use safely. Without that training, you risk scratching your enamel, which increases tooth sensitivity and creates rough spots where even more plaque accumulates. You can also gouge your gum tissue, causing pain, bleeding, infection, and gum recession that exposes the sensitive roots of your teeth. Gum recession is permanent.

Even if you manage to chip off some visible tartar, you’re unlikely to remove the deposits below the gumline, which are the ones most responsible for gum disease. You’ll end up with a tooth that looks cleaner but still has the hidden buildup doing the most damage.

What About Natural Remedies?

Oil pulling, baking soda pastes, white vinegar rinses, and activated charcoal are commonly recommended online for tartar removal. None of them work on hardened calculus. Oil pulling in particular has been widely promoted, but the American Dental Association has found no reliable scientific evidence that it reduces cavities, whitens teeth, or improves oral health. These remedies may have mild effects on soft plaque, but soft plaque isn’t the problem you searched for. Once minerals have crystallized into tartar, no liquid, paste, or rinse can dissolve it without also damaging your teeth.

Baking soda is mildly abrasive and can help scrub away fresh plaque during brushing, which is useful for prevention. But it won’t break the bond between calculus and enamel. Vinegar rinses are acidic enough to theoretically dissolve mineral deposits, but they also erode enamel, trading one problem for a worse one.

How to Prevent New Tartar From Forming

Since you can’t remove tartar at home, prevention becomes everything. The goal is simple: remove plaque before it has those 48 hours to harden. Here’s what actually works.

  • Brush twice a day for two full minutes. Most people brush for about 45 seconds. Use a timer. Electric toothbrushes with built-in timers tend to remove more plaque than manual brushing, particularly along the gumline where tartar forms fastest.
  • Floss daily. Tartar loves the tight spaces between teeth where bristles can’t reach. Flossing disrupts plaque in those gaps before it mineralizes. If string floss feels awkward, water flossers and interdental brushes accomplish the same thing.

  • Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash. Mouthwashes containing cetylpyridinium chloride or similar antibacterial agents reduce the volume of plaque-forming bacteria in your mouth, giving you a wider margin of safety between brushings.

Where Tartar Builds Up Fastest

Tartar doesn’t form evenly across all your teeth. It accumulates most on the inner surfaces of your lower front teeth and the outer surfaces of your upper molars. These areas sit closest to the openings of your salivary glands, so they’re constantly bathed in mineral-rich saliva that accelerates the hardening process. Pay extra attention to these spots when brushing. Angle your brush at 45 degrees toward the gumline and use short, gentle strokes rather than scrubbing back and forth.

If you notice a hard, yellowish or brownish deposit along your gumline that doesn’t come off when you brush, that’s tartar. It may feel rough or crusty to your tongue. The longer it sits, the more it irritates your gums, leading to redness, swelling, bleeding when you brush, and eventually gum disease that can loosen teeth.

How Often You Need Professional Cleaning

The old standard of “every six months” is a reasonable baseline, but the right frequency depends on how quickly you personally build up tartar. Some people produce very little calculus between visits. Others have heavy buildup within weeks, often due to saliva composition, genetics, or diet. There is no universal consensus on a single optimal interval. A dentist or hygienist can assess your rate of buildup and recommend a schedule that fits your mouth, whether that’s every three months, six months, or somewhere in between.
