Dental plaque is a sticky, yellowish film that forms on your teeth within hours of brushing. The good news: because plaque is soft, you can remove almost all of it at home with the right technique and tools. The catch is timing. Plaque starts reforming within seconds of a cleaning, and if it stays on your teeth for 10 to 20 days, it mineralizes into tartar, a hard deposit made of calcium and magnesium compounds that only a dental professional can safely remove. So getting rid of plaque is really about two things: disrupting the film that’s already there and preventing it from hardening.
Why Plaque Comes Back So Fast
Within seconds of brushing, proteins from your saliva coat your teeth and form a thin conditioning layer. Bacteria latch onto that layer almost immediately, and within 24 hours a full biofilm, what we call plaque, has developed again. This is why brushing once a day isn’t enough. You’re in a constant race against a bacterial colony that rebuilds itself daily and, left alone for roughly 12 days, hardens into tartar.
Tartar is essentially dead bacteria that have fused with minerals in your saliva. Once that happens, no amount of brushing or flossing will break it loose. Attempting to scrape tartar off yourself can damage enamel and make teeth more vulnerable to cavities. Professional cleaning is the only safe option at that stage. Everything below is about keeping plaque soft and removable so it never gets that far.
Brushing Technique Matters More Than You Think
Most dentists recommend what’s called the Modified Bass technique, and it’s worth learning because it targets the exact spot where plaque does the most damage: right at the gum line. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle so the bristles point toward where your gums meet your teeth. Make short, gentle back-and-forth strokes, then sweep the brush away from the gum line toward the biting edge of the tooth. This motion pushes plaque out of the shallow groove between gum and tooth rather than just skimming over the flat surfaces.
Brush for a full two minutes, twice a day. Most people rush through in under a minute, which leaves large patches of plaque untouched, especially along the inner surfaces of the lower front teeth and the outer surfaces of the upper molars. An electric toothbrush with a built-in timer can help, and the oscillating head tends to be more forgiving of imperfect technique.
Cleaning Between Your Teeth
Brushing alone misses the tight spaces between teeth, which is where plaque often hardens first. You need some form of interdental cleaning every day, and the evidence slightly favors interdental brushes (the small, bristled picks you slide between teeth) over traditional floss for most people. A 2015 meta-review in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology found moderate evidence that interdental brushes reduce both plaque and gum inflammation, while the evidence for floss was weaker across the board. Multiple studies have shown that interdental brushes produce lower plaque scores in the spaces between teeth compared to floss.
The caveat: interdental brushes only work if you have enough space between your teeth for the bristles to fit without forcing. For very tight contacts, especially between the front teeth, floss or a floss pick is still the better choice. The best tool is the one that fits your mouth and that you’ll actually use daily. If you’ve never used interdental brushes, start with the smallest size and work up. They should slide in with gentle pressure, not force.
Choosing the Right Toothpaste
Not all fluoride toothpastes fight plaque equally. Standard toothpastes contain sodium fluoride, which strengthens enamel but doesn’t do much to kill plaque bacteria directly. Stannous fluoride, found in some widely available brands, goes a step further. The tin ion in stannous fluoride can penetrate bacterial cell walls, form deposits that rupture the membrane, and kill the bacteria outright. It also binds to inflammatory compounds that bacteria release, reducing gum irritation. If you’re prone to plaque buildup or early gum disease, switching to a stannous fluoride toothpaste is one of the simplest upgrades you can make.
Look for “stannous fluoride” in the active ingredients on the label. One minor tradeoff: stannous fluoride can cause mild surface staining in some people, though this is cosmetic and easily polished off at cleanings.
Mouthwash as a Backup, Not a Replacement
Rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash after brushing can reduce plaque in areas your brush missed. Essential oil mouthwashes (the ones that contain thymol, eucalyptol, and menthol) have been shown to significantly reduce both the thickness and the bacterial activity of plaque biofilm compared to rinsing with water alone. In clinical testing, they cut biofilm thickness by more than half and reduced the percentage of living bacteria in the film dramatically.
Prescription-strength chlorhexidine rinses are more potent, particularly at reducing the total surface coverage of plaque, but they stain teeth with extended use and are typically reserved for short-term treatment of gum disease. For everyday prevention, an over-the-counter essential oil rinse is a practical addition to your routine. Swish for 30 seconds after brushing and flossing, especially before bed when saliva flow drops and bacteria thrive.
Xylitol and Diet
The bacteria responsible for most plaque growth feed on sugars in your diet, particularly sucrose. Every time you eat something sweet or starchy, you’re essentially fertilizing the biofilm on your teeth. Reducing snacking frequency matters as much as reducing sugar quantity, because each exposure gives bacteria a fresh round of fuel.
Xylitol, a sugar alcohol found in certain chewing gums and mints, works differently. Plaque bacteria absorb xylitol but can’t metabolize it, which disrupts their growth cycle. Research suggests that 6 to 10 grams of xylitol per day, spread across at least three doses, can meaningfully reduce levels of the primary cavity-causing bacteria in plaque. That translates to roughly two pieces of xylitol gum after each meal. Check that xylitol is the first ingredient listed, not just a minor additive. Products where xylitol appears third or fourth on the label contain too little to have a real effect.
Does Oil Pulling Work?
Oil pulling, the practice of swishing a tablespoon of oil (usually coconut) in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes, has genuine plaque-reducing effects. A randomized crossover trial found that coconut oil pulling inhibited plaque regrowth at a level comparable to chlorhexidine rinse, the clinical gold standard, while causing less tooth staining. The oil appears to pull bacteria from surfaces and reduce their ability to colonize teeth.
That said, oil pulling takes significantly more time than a 30-second mouthwash rinse, and it doesn’t deliver fluoride or other active ingredients your teeth need. It’s a reasonable supplement if you enjoy the practice, but it shouldn’t replace brushing, interdental cleaning, or fluoride toothpaste.
Professional Cleaning for Tartar
If plaque has already hardened into tartar on your teeth, those rough, chalky deposits along your gum line or behind your lower front teeth, you need a professional scaling. During a routine cleaning, a hygienist uses hand instruments or ultrasonic tools to chip and vibrate tartar off the tooth surface both above and below the gum line. Your gums are numbed beforehand, and most people return to normal activities the same day. Expect mild gum soreness for a couple of days and some tooth sensitivity that fades within a month or two.
For more advanced buildup, a deeper procedure called scaling and root planing smooths the tooth roots to help gums reattach and make it harder for bacteria to colonize again. How often you need professional cleanings depends on how quickly you accumulate tartar. Every six months is standard, but some people benefit from every three to four months, especially if they have a history of gum disease or naturally mineral-heavy saliva that accelerates tartar formation.
A Practical Daily Routine
- Morning: Brush for two minutes using the angled, short-stroke technique at the gum line. Use a stannous fluoride toothpaste. Clean between teeth with interdental brushes or floss.
- After meals: Chew xylitol gum for five minutes, or rinse with water if gum isn’t available. Avoid brushing for at least 30 minutes after acidic foods or drinks, since acid temporarily softens enamel.
- Before bed: Brush again for two minutes, clean between teeth if you only do it once a day, and finish with an antiseptic mouthwash. Nighttime is when plaque grows fastest because saliva production drops during sleep.
Consistency matters more than perfection. Plaque reforms in 24 hours, so one missed session won’t ruin your teeth. But regularly skipping the evening brush or ignoring the spaces between your teeth gives bacteria the 10 to 20 uninterrupted days they need to harden into tartar, and at that point, only a dental visit can undo the damage.
