The method that works best depends on whether your stains sit on the outside of your teeth or are embedded within the tooth structure itself. Surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco respond well to both at-home and professional treatments, while deeper discoloration sometimes requires more targeted solutions.

Why Stain Type Matters

Staining agents like coffee, red wine, blueberries, tobacco, and certain bacteria don’t actually stick to smooth enamel directly. Instead, they build up in the thin protein film that naturally coats your teeth throughout the day. Over time, these pigments accumulate and become visibly discolored. These are extrinsic (surface) stains, and they’re the easiest to address. Brown stains are commonly caused by tobacco and dark beverages. Green or orange stains tend to show up when oral hygiene is lacking and certain bacteria are present. Yellow stains often signal heavy plaque buildup.

Intrinsic stains live inside the tooth structure and are harder to treat. They can result from excessive fluoride exposure during childhood, certain antibiotics taken while teeth were still developing, high fevers during enamel formation, or simply genetics and aging. These stains typically appear yellow, brown, gray, or as white spots on the enamel. One important detail: surface stains that go untreated long enough can eventually work their way deeper and become intrinsic, which is a good reason not to ignore them.

Before investing in any whitening product, a professional dental cleaning can make a surprising difference. Ultrasonic scalers vibrate at 25,000 to 45,000 times per second, breaking up hardened deposits and surface stains that your toothbrush simply can’t reach. As water flows over the vibrating tip, it creates millions of tiny bubbles that disrupt bacterial buildup along with the discoloration trapped in it. Dealing With Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect of whitening, and it’s usually temporary. Starting a sensitive-formula toothpaste a week or two before you begin whitening gives your teeth a head start.

For more immediate relief, a dentist can apply fluoride varnish directly to your teeth. These varnishes contain concentrated sodium fluoride (up to 5%) and can provide relief lasting up to eight weeks. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers like ibuprofen also help manage discomfort in the short term.

Crowns, Veneers, and Bonding Won’t Whiten

If you have dental work like crowns, veneers, or composite bonding, peroxide-based whitening will not change their color. These materials lack the internal structure of natural enamel that allows peroxide to break down stain molecules. The composite or porcelain stays the same shade while your natural teeth lighten around them, which can create a noticeable mismatch.

The practical workaround is to whiten your natural teeth first, then have existing bonding or restorations polished, resurfaced, or replaced to match your new shade. If you’re planning both whitening and cosmetic dental work, always whiten first so your dentist can color-match the new materials to your brighter teeth.

Keeping Results After Whitening

Your teeth are more porous than usual for about 48 hours after any whitening treatment. During this window, pigmented foods and drinks can restain them quickly. Coffee, red wine, black tea, soy sauce, tomato-based sauces, berries like blueberries and blackberries, and brightly colored sports drinks are the biggest offenders. The tannins in coffee and red wine are especially aggressive, latching onto the temporarily porous enamel surface before it has time to remineralize.

After that initial 48-hour period, long-term maintenance comes down to consistent habits. Rinsing your mouth with water after drinking coffee or wine, brushing twice daily, and keeping up with regular dental cleanings all slow the return of staining. Most whitening results aren’t permanent, and touch-up treatments every six months to a year are common for people who want to maintain their shade.
