You can’t cure a common cold, but you can shorten how long it lasts and feel noticeably better while your body fights it off. Most colds resolve in under seven days, though symptoms can linger for up to two weeks. The key is acting fast with the right combination of rest, hydration, and a few evidence-backed remedies in the first 24 hours.
Why You Can’t “Cure” a Cold
Colds are caused by viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses, and no medication kills these viruses once they’ve taken hold. Antibiotics work only against bacteria, so they’re useless here. What you can do is support your immune system, reduce symptom severity, and avoid the mistakes that drag a cold out longer than it needs to last.
Zinc Lozenges: Start Within 24 Hours
Zinc is one of the few supplements with real clinical backing for shortening colds. The catch is timing: you need to start taking zinc lozenges within the first 24 hours of symptoms. The saline solution passes through delicate nasal membranes with minimal burning or irritation, and it loosens thick mucus that blowing your nose alone won’t clear.

A humidifier can ease congestion and soothe irritated nasal passages, particularly in winter when indoor air dries out. Keep your home’s humidity between 30% and 50%. Below that range, dry air irritates your nose and throat. Above it, you create conditions for mold and bacteria to grow on surfaces.
Vitamin C: Modest Benefits, Timing Matters
Vitamin C won’t prevent you from catching a cold if you’re already exposed, but regular supplementation may trim how long it lasts. One large trial found that people taking vitamin C experienced roughly 30% fewer total days of disability (days stuck at home or off work) compared to placebo, a statistically significant difference. Some evidence suggests that higher therapeutic doses taken at the onset of symptoms could be as effective as taking vitamin C daily as a preventive measure, with benefits appearing to increase with dose.

A fever that gets worse a few days into the illness rather than improving is another red flag, since viral fevers typically peak early and then decline. Persistent cough with stomach pain or difficulty breathing could signal pneumonia.
These secondary bacterial infections are the one scenario where antibiotics actually help, because the original virus has created conditions for bacteria to move in. If your symptoms follow any of these patterns, it’s worth getting evaluated.
