Tilting your head to the side and gently tugging your earlobe is the fastest way to get water out of your ear. In most cases, water drains on its own within minutes, but when it gets trapped deeper in the canal, you may need a few simple techniques to coax it out. The good news: this is almost always fixable at home.
Why Water Gets Stuck in the First Place
Your ear canal isn’t a straight tube. It curves slightly and narrows at a point called the isthmus, about two-thirds of the way in toward the eardrum. That narrow spot can hold water tightly because surface tension dominates over gravity at that small scale. Think of how water clings to the inside of a narrow straw.
The canal is also lined with cerumen, the waxy coating your ears naturally produce. That wax is hydrophobic (water-repelling), which sounds like it should help, but it actually pins water droplets in place rather than letting them slide along the skin surface toward the opening. So once a bead of water settles past the narrow point, it can sit there stubbornly, creating that muffled, sloshing feeling.
There’s one more factor working against you. The air pocket between the trapped water and your sealed eardrum acts like a slight vacuum. When the water tries to move outward, that air pocket expands and drops in pressure, pulling the water back in. This is why simply tipping your head sometimes isn’t enough.
The Tilt-and-Tug Method
Start with the simplest approach. Tilt your head so the affected ear faces straight down. Then gently pull on your earlobe, which straightens the ear canal and gives the water a more direct path out. Hold this position for 30 seconds or so. You can also try lying on your side with a towel under your head for a few minutes, letting gravity do the work over a longer period.
Create Suction With Your Palm
If tilting alone doesn’t work, you can use your hand like a mini plunger. Tilt your head to the side with the affected ear facing down. Cup your palm flat over your ear, pressing firmly enough to create a seal. Then rapidly flatten and cup your hand several times. This pumping motion creates a small pressure change inside the canal that can break the surface tension holding the water in place. After a few pumps, tilt your head and pull up and back on your ear to let the water drain.
Move Your Jaw
Chewing gum or making exaggerated yawning motions can shift the shape of the ear canal just enough to release trapped water. Your jaw joint sits right next to the ear canal, so when you open and close your mouth widely, it changes the canal’s geometry. This works best when combined with head tilting.
Use a Hair Dryer on Low
The CDC recommends using a hair dryer to evaporate stubborn water. Set it to the lowest heat and the lowest fan speed. Hold it several inches from your ear, never directly against it. The gentle warm air evaporates the water without risking a burn to the sensitive skin inside the canal. A minute or two is usually enough.
Drying Drops You Can Buy or Make
Over-the-counter swimmer’s ear drops contain 95% isopropyl alcohol in a glycerin base. The alcohol mixes with the trapped water and evaporates quickly, carrying the moisture with it. You can find these at any pharmacy, usually labeled as “ear drying drops” or “swimmer’s ear drops.”
You can also make your own solution at home: mix equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Pour about a teaspoon into the affected ear, wait 30 seconds, then tilt your head to drain it out. The alcohol speeds evaporation while the vinegar creates an acidic environment that discourages bacterial and fungal growth. This is particularly useful if you swim regularly and deal with trapped water often.
One important caveat: do not put any drops in your ear if you suspect a perforated eardrum. Signs include sudden sharp pain (especially after an injury or pressure change), bleeding from the ear, or a sudden dramatic change in hearing. Drops containing alcohol or certain other ingredients can damage the delicate structures of the middle ear if the eardrum has a hole in it.
What Not to Do
Cotton swabs are the most common mistake. Pushing a swab into a wet ear canal doesn’t remove water. It shoves earwax deeper, can scratch the canal lining and cause bleeding, and in the worst case can puncture the eardrum. Pieces of cotton can also break off and lodge in the canal. The same goes for fingers, bobby pins, or anything else you might be tempted to stick in there.
Avoid using hydrogen peroxide if you’re only dealing with trapped water. It’s useful for loosening earwax but creates its own bubbling moisture, which is counterproductive when drying out the canal is the goal.
External Canal vs. Middle Ear Fluid
Everything above applies to water trapped in the external ear canal, the tube that runs from your outer ear to your eardrum. This is the kind you get from swimming, showering, or bathing. It’s water you can feel sloshing when you tilt your head.
Fluid behind the eardrum is a completely different situation. The middle ear is a sealed, air-filled space on the other side of the eardrum, connected to the back of your throat by the eustachian tubes. Fluid builds up there because of infections, allergies, or blocked eustachian tubes, not from swimming. You can’t drain middle ear fluid with any of the techniques above. If you have persistent muffled hearing, ear pressure, or pain that doesn’t resolve with these methods, the fluid may be behind the eardrum rather than in front of it.
When Trapped Water Becomes Swimmer’s Ear
Water that sits in the ear canal for too long creates a warm, moist environment where bacteria thrive. This can lead to swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), an infection of the canal itself. The progression is fairly predictable.
Early on, you’ll notice itching in the canal and slight redness. Discomfort gets worse when you pull on your outer ear or press the small flap of cartilage in front of the ear opening. As the infection progresses, the itching and pain intensify, hearing becomes muffled as the canal swells, and you may see fluid draining from the ear. In advanced cases, pain can radiate to your face, neck, or the side of your head, the canal can swell completely shut, lymph nodes in the neck may enlarge, and fever can develop.
The key distinction: simple trapped water causes a muffled or full feeling but not real pain. If pulling on your earlobe hurts, or if symptoms are getting worse rather than better over 24 to 48 hours, you’re likely dealing with an infection rather than just residual water.
Preventing Water From Getting Trapped
If this happens to you regularly, a few habits help. Tilt your head to each side immediately after swimming or showering and let water drain before it has a chance to settle deep in the canal. Using the vinegar-and-alcohol drops after every swim keeps the canal dry and slightly acidic, which discourages bacterial growth. Silicone earplugs molded to fit your outer ear can keep water out of the canal entirely during swimming. Avoid over-cleaning your ears, since the natural wax lining, despite its role in trapping water, also acts as a barrier against infection.
