Tilting your head to the side with the affected ear facing down is the simplest and most effective way to get water out of your ear. In most cases, a combination of gravity and gentle earlobe tugging will do the job in under a minute. When that doesn’t work, a few other techniques can help break the seal that’s keeping water trapped.
Why Water Gets Stuck in the First Place
Your ear canal isn’t a straight, smooth tube. It has a narrow section called the isthmus where cartilage meets bone, and this bottleneck is tight enough that surface tension can hold a small column of water in place against gravity. The canal is also lined with earwax, which is naturally water-repellent. Rather than letting water slide along the skin and drain out, the wax pins water droplets in place.
This is why simply tilting your head doesn’t always work. The water forms a plug that seals against the canal walls, and the air pocket trapped above it (between the water and your eardrum) creates a slight vacuum when the water tries to move downward. That vacuum actually pulls the water back in. The physics involved is similar to how water stays inside a straw when you cap the top with your finger.
Children are more prone to stubborn trapped water than adults. Research published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics found that smaller ear canals require significantly more force to break the surface tension holding the water in place. For a child, vigorous head-shaking may not generate enough acceleration to dislodge the water, and shaking too hard carries its own risks.
Gravity and Earlobe Pulling
Start with the simplest approach. Tilt your head so the affected ear points straight down toward the ground. While holding that position, gently pull your earlobe downward and slightly back. This straightens the ear canal, widening the narrow section just enough to let gravity overcome surface tension. Hold this for 30 seconds or so.
If standing and tilting isn’t working, lie on your side with the affected ear down, resting on a towel. Staying in this position for a few minutes gives gravity more time to work. The key is keeping the ear canal as vertical as possible, pointed directly downward. That alignment creates the best conditions for the water column to become unstable and break free.
The Vacuum Palm Technique
Tilt your affected ear down and press your palm flat against it, creating a tight seal. Then quickly pull your hand away. This mimics a suction cup: pressing in compresses the air, and pulling away creates a brief pressure change that can dislodge the water plug. You can repeat this several times. Be gentle with the pressure, as you don’t want to push the water deeper.
The Valsalva Maneuver
Close your mouth, pinch your nostrils shut, and gently blow as if you’re trying to pop your ears on an airplane. This pushes air through the Eustachian tubes into the middle ear space, which can shift pressure behind the eardrum just enough to nudge the trapped water outward. Don’t blow hard. A gentle, steady push is all you need.
Heat and Evaporation
A warm compress can help evaporate small amounts of trapped water. Hold a warm (not hot) washcloth against your ear for about 30 seconds, then tilt your head down. Repeat a few times. The warmth opens the ear canal slightly and helps the water evaporate faster. A hair dryer set to its lowest heat and lowest fan speed, held at least a foot from your ear, can also speed up drying.
The Alcohol and Vinegar Solution
If water stays trapped after swimming or bathing and you can’t shake it loose, a homemade drying solution can help. Mix equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Tilt your head with the affected ear up, place a few drops inside, then tilt the other way to let it drain. The alcohol mixes with the water and lowers the surface tension, making the combined liquid easier to drain. It also evaporates faster than water alone. The vinegar component helps prevent bacterial and fungal growth, which is the main concern when water sits in the ear canal too long.
Over-the-counter ear drying drops work on the same principle. Most contain 95% isopropyl alcohol in a glycerin base. They’re convenient if you swim regularly and deal with trapped water often.
When Not to Put Anything in Your Ear
Skip the drops entirely, whether homemade or store-bought, if you have any reason to suspect a ruptured eardrum. Signs include sudden sharp pain that fades quickly, any discharge (especially bloody or pus-like fluid), ringing in the ear, hearing loss, or dizziness with nausea. A ruptured eardrum can result from a recent ear infection, pressure changes during flying or scuba diving, a blow to the head, or even pushing a cotton swab in too deep. Putting alcohol or any liquid into an ear with a perforated eardrum causes intense pain and can lead to infection in the middle ear.
Cotton swabs are never a good tool for removing water. They push water deeper, compact earwax, and risk puncturing the eardrum. The same goes for fingernails, bobby pins, or anything else you might be tempted to stick into the canal.
What Happens If Water Stays Trapped
A few hours of water in the ear is annoying but harmless. The concern starts when moisture sits in the ear canal long enough for bacteria to thrive, which leads to swimmer’s ear (an infection of the outer ear canal). Early symptoms include itching inside the ear, slight redness, and mild discomfort that gets worse when you pull on your earlobe. Left untreated, swimmer’s ear can progress to significant pain, swelling that partially blocks the canal, and fluid drainage.
If you notice pain, persistent fullness, or reduced hearing that lasts more than a day after water exposure, it’s worth getting it checked. Seek urgent care for severe ear pain or fever, which suggest the infection has progressed. Outer ear infections that persist beyond three months are classified as chronic and typically need more involved treatment.
